The people "exiled" were or communist (in that time commmunism was forbidden in Brazil do illegal) or were terrorists like former Impeached president Dilma Roussef, they killed people and promote a series of violent acts that were ended when all terrorist were out of Brazil like FHC former president, Roussef, Jose Dirceu, Jose Genoino, Lamarca, Marighella,Franklin Martins among others. Clarice Herzog who is part of the lyrics "choram Marias e Clarisses" was the wife of Walter Herzog a journalist that support and hide armed terrorist in his country ranch. This is why he was captured and killed for. All these terrorists were part of a huge coup with Cuba and URSS back in 1964. The army reacted and stopped the left coup . Unfortunatelly in 1985 the state return to the people and since then the Lenin Decalogue is being applied in Brazil. So just since 2016 we are recovering the country from communist hands. Thaks God!

A Elis tinha se enrolado na bandeira no Festival de Montreux e quando voltou o Henfil ficou putíssimo com ela por isso, ele perguntou se ela não tinha noção do que estava acontecendo, dos desaparecidos, dos exilados, dos torturados. Ela, então, pediu pro Aldir Blanc uma música que falasse de tudo isso mas que acenasse uma esperança. Quando ela foi apresentar a música pela primeira vez, chamou o Henfil e ele ficou na primeira fila, quando acabou ele falou que aquele seria o hino da liberdade, do fim da ditadura, como foi mesmo. Tivemos uma aula sobre essa música na faculdade, com uma historiadora que fez mestrado e doutorado sobre música.

Also a very significant song in the military government period here... the lyrics references some artists that had to move to other countries during this period. So emotional, specially nowadays, when we are living a horrific time here. Very very sad, but also, in a certain way, very much hopeful to hear this again.

Era final de ditadura, a censura ainda existia, o regime podia ainda retroceder, tudo tinha que ser "telegrafado" em código para os censores pemitirem passar. O "irmão do Henfil", de que fala a letra, era o sociólogo Betinho, classificado como "terrorista comunista" pelos órgãos de repressão. Ele é que chamaria a atenção para o problema crucial da fome e da miséria no país. Preocupação que depois seria sistematizada pelo pioneiro Programa de Renda Mínima de Eduardo Suplicy. A luta contra a fome só foi concluída, recentemente, pela presidente Dilma Roussef, quase no fim do seu primeiro mandato, fato oficializado pela saída do Brasil do Mapa da Fome, pela ONU. Tais proezas pelos brasileiros necessitados custou caro a todos os envolvidos. Both Elis and the writer of the song, Aldir Blanc, are not with us anymore, which is a shame. This song is mentions a ton of really awful problems happening during the military dictatorship in beautiful poetic images. We often describe brazil as a gentle mother, it's in our national anthem, and the song mentions she's crying, like Marias and Clarices, women whose husbands were tortured and killed. Viaducts falling, exiled people, but also a struggling but persistant hope, the tightrope walker (equilibrista) that knows she could get hurt but the show must go on.

You may like this video of Elis Regina in live on TV on the 80's. It is an anthological and sensitive performance and there's story behind it. The piano player was her husband, Cesar Camargo Mariano, and they was in very dificult moment in their relationship, cause they was about to divorce, and nobody knew it at that moment. Amnestied people came back and were received at the airport in Brazil by their relatives singing this song. It was a relief for Elis, because, years before she was accused by some artists (as Henfil, quoted in this Music) to sing for militaries (because she was threated by them) and Henfil’s brother was exiled in Mexico. This music was a redemption for her and she made up with Henfil. “Tanta gente que partiu num rabo de foguete” were the exiled people. Clarice, was the wife of Herzog, tortured and murdered during the dictatorship. A great part of brazilian music between 64-80 are political music, with hiden messages with poetic metaphors, to avoid censorship (far right people aren’t so smart...)

Essa é a música brasileira que mais exige conhecimento histórico para ser plenamente entendida. Era final de ditadura, a censura ainda existia, o regime podia ainda retroceder, tudo tinha que ser "telegrafado" em código para os censores pemitirem passar. O "irmão do Henfil", de que fala a letra, era o sociólogo Betinho, classificado como "terrorista comunista" pelos órgãos de repressão. Ele é que chamaria a atenção para o problema crucial da fome e da miséria no país. Preocupação que depois seria sistematizada pelo pioneiro Programa de Renda Mínima de Eduardo Suplicy. A luta contra a fome só foi concluída, recentemente, pela presidente Dilma Roussef, quase no fim do seu primeiro mandato, fato oficializado pela saída do Brasil do Mapa da Fome, pela ONU. Tais proezas pelos brasileiros necessitados custou caro a todos os envolvidos. Suplicy recentemente perdeu o mandato de Senador para um empresário que nunca se preocupou com os famintos, Henfil morreu por AIDS contraída numa hemodiálise - dia caso com a saúde pública, Dilma, por acabar com a fome no Brasil e eliminar estatisticamente a miséria, foi derrubada num golpe de Estado. This song is mentions a ton of really awful problems happening during the military dictatorship in beautiful poetic images. We often describe brazil as a gentle mother, it's in our national anthem, and the song mentions she's crying, like Marias and Clarices, women whose husbands were tortured and killed. Viaducts falling, exiled people, but also a struggling but persistant hope, the tightrope walker (equilibrista) that knows she could get hurt but the show must go on.

Fun facts about Elis Regina: Well, she is one of the greatest Brazilian singers of all times for sure. And she was also an impulsive person and quite a perfectionist about her performances. So much that once she fired her entire band DURING THE SHOW!! Just because they were becoming like a little bit sloppy. Hahahahaha I keep on imagining the situation. It was like this, as I have heard from the guy that wrote her biography: As she presented the band she said "this is my band, which is playing with me for the LAST time". Hahahahahahahaha
the public applauded her for 11 minutes at the end of this show. She had to come back to the scene with the artist of the next show! witch was Hermeto Paschoal.

This song became the anthem of political amnesty after the worst period of dictatorship in Brazil. Amnestied people came back and were received at the airport in Brazil by their relatives singing this song. It was a relief for Elis, because, years before she was accused by some artists (as Henfil, quoted in this Music) to sing for militaries (because she was threated by them) and Henfil’s brother was exiled in Mexico. This music was a redemption for her and she made up with Henfil. “Tanta gente que partiu num rabo de foguete” were the exiled people. Clarice, was the wife of Herzog, tortured and murdered during the dictatorship.
A great part of brazilian music between 64-80 are political music, with hiden messages with poetic metaphors, to avoid censorship (far right people aren’t so smart...)
