  • Today a black snake slithered up the ramp and into my coop. Watch it try to eat an egg. For those who are wondering, but don't want to watch this video. I caught and released the snake into the woods a few miles down the road.

    You have my deepest respect for not killing the snake. I also recently found a black snake in a container where I'm raising 11 little chicks and found that it had killed 3 and eaten 2. I released the snake unharmed back into the yard and faulted myself for not making a snake proof place to raise the chicks. Can't blame a snake for trying to get an easy meal. All the best -

    Snakes are important rodent population control...I know this is true, because I once witnessed a snake passing out mouse condoms on my back porch...hahahaha!

    How did you catch it? Anyone else think it's kind of cute? It stopped when it realized it was being watched but once it realized you're just "observing" him/her, it continued up the coop to feed it's belly. I would have freaked out. And 100 points for you for not killing it.

    Maybe I'm wrong, but the chicken wire openings/holes are too big, snake can get through?Replace it with smaller mesh , may help!

    Thanks for relocating the snake. I love them and have done much the same to help out an uninvited guest. I had one in my canary cage that ate my singer. I let it go too. Hey they are trying to get by and can't vote for politicians that promise to feed them for life.

    Good for you not killing the black snake like most people would have. Also, have you looked into a small solar panel for your coop? I'm building my coop and run and am definitely going to put one on mine. They're so inexpensive now and it would solve having an extension cord across your yard in the summer.

      @E_Fleming  9 лет назад +1

      ***** Others have offered the same suggestion about using a solar panel. I happen to have a trickle charger and several of these deep cycle batteries. So I went with that cause it was free. I just bring my batteries in every 3 weeks or so to charge them.

    That would have been the last egg it would have ever tried to steal were this to happen to me lol. One less snake I would have had to worry about. Side note a much smaller mesh and or electrifying the fence would have helped a bunch

    I caught a huge blacksnake once; he was crossing the parking lot where I lived. I was afraid he would be killed, so, after I dragged him out of a bush, I released him over a fence and into the woods. Trouble was, he got musk (snake pee?) on my hands. So I went to class and sat next to my best friend. I asked her if she wanted to smell my new perfume. She sniffed my wrists, then screamed out loud, startling everyone, and whispered that she was going to "get me." Funniest thing ever, lol.

    I don't know if he "dug" in under the coop or got in some other way, but I've heard a way to keep out the critters is to line the inside edges of the coop with 12" wide pavers. That way, if something digs under, when it comes up, it's going to hit a block and go back. I suppose you could put the sand down on top of the pavers if you didn't want to look at them, but it might help if he's getting in with a hole under the structure.

    • @E_Fleming
      @E_Fleming  9 лет назад

      +Michelle Paul I think this one was narrow enough that it actually squeezed between the wire fence. You are definitely right about that paver setup. Thanks for watching!

    If you open the container by reaching across to the other side you can use the lid as a shield and reduce the chance of getting bit. Should also be done when picking up anything a snake could be under like rocks or wood.

  • @sal2703

    Yes my run was completely enclosed with chicken wire. There were no breaks in the wire and no holes dug anywhere. I was baffled after a week and two dead chickens with no signs of a struggle. No rips or cuts no feather loss. Just dead where they were resting. I seen the black snake in a nearby area but thought nothing of it. I then did some research and realized he was the culprit.

      Yoie Gunderson this isn’t my video, and I’m doubting you have seen my videos....I am actually considering deleting all mine, they suck so bad. I might remake them, but wow. El stinko!
      Good luck with your videos, give it a shot. Remember, a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.
      And even if it was shot on the phone, you can transfer the video to a computer and edit it there before posting. Remove the audio track that originally happened, do a much briefer and less chatty voice over or some music and post. If you want to change it later you can. But if you never post anything than you will never have posted anything......

    I had heard from several people that a flock of chickens will attack (and often kill and eat) small snakes etc. that encroach into their areas. Is that just an old wives tale or was this one just too large for them to handle or ???

    • @E_Fleming
      @E_Fleming  10 лет назад

      Hmm, I have never heard that...that's a good question. Roosters are a little more territorial and protective I think. My chickens wouldn't even eat a toad that hopped into their run a few weeks ago.

      Jeffrey Gilbert Does that apply to ALL snakes that they find in the enclosure or just the little ones? Also, do they distinguish between venomous and non-venomous snakes? How frequently do the chickens come out on the losing end of a snake-chicken encounter?

    • @E_Fleming
      @E_Fleming  10 лет назад +2

      All good questions. If you are interested, watch a PBS special called "My Life as a Turkey" It's amazing! Granted, the special is about turkeys not chickens but I think you will find it very interesting. They talk a good deal in that about how wild turkeys are able to identify venomous snakes versus non-venemous and how they warn each other about the presence of a snake. Crazy stuff.
