In keeping with her history of composing audience-pleasing concertos, Jennifer Higdon agreed to pen a mandolin concerto at the request of Israeli-born Avi Avital. The concerto is in two movements. Both have characteristic use of orchestral color and an instinctive, rather than formal, sense of structure. Her music is thoroughly transparent, and it can be appreciated on one hearing. Because of the delicate sound of the mandolin, Higdon uses smaller groupings within the pared-down orchestra to ensure that the sound of the solo instrument can be heard. The second movement is particularly energizing, with a mandolin introduction sounding vaguely Eastern, which leads to a rousing finale. Because it is a plucked instrument, the mandolin cannot sustain a note, the soloist must repeatedly strum to create the illusion of a long tone. Avital excels his right hand moved extraordinarily fast, to the point of being a blur. Musicians at the rear of the stage must have had difficulty hearing the audience facing, delicate sounding instrument. It fell to Higdon to ensure balance and cohesion and that she did. Ich oute mich mal als kein so großer Fan zeitgenössischer klassischer Musik - und muss einmal mehr bekennen daß mir viel Schönes entgeht. Ich war für den Tschaikovsky im Konzert - und von dem Mandolinenkonzert hingerissen. Dieses Werk hat mir live sehr gut gefallen an dem Abend - und jetzt nochmal beim wiederhören. Großen Dank und Bravo an alle!
The first time I heard Avi Avital was in Bartoks Rumanian dances with Alice Sara Ott. And now this with a big orchestra! I am glad that music always developes, and that a solist on mandoline now is welcome in such a fine orchestra!
Bravo!! A great performance! I'm especially impressed by how well Prof. Higdon balanced the orchestral accompaniment with the mandolin. The mideastern flavor at the beginning Ana a the end of Part 2 was a nice touch.
Such an interesting concert! Never heard of this composer before.
Tiefempfundene Interpretation dieses modernen doch meisterhaft komponierten Konzerts mit gut vereinigten Tönen aller Instrumente. Die Zusammenwirkung zwischen dem erfahrenen hr-Sinfonieorchester, dem klugen Maestro und dem virtuosen Solisten ist wirklich perfekt. Wahrlich wunderbar!

Wunderschöne Aufführung dieses einzigartig konstruierten doch perfekt komponierten Konzerts mit schimmerndem doch mildem Klang der genialen Solomandoline sowie gut vereinigten und perfekt entsprechenden Tönen der anderen Instrumente. Der intelligente und ebenso geniale Dirigent leitet das ausgezeichnete Orchester im gut analysiertenTempo und mit sorgfältig kontrollierter Dynamik. Faszinierend vom Anfang bis zum Ende!
