Almost 26 years later to the day, on March 16, 1988 Mickey Thompson and his wife were murdered by two gunmen as they attempted to depart their home. Not until 13 years later was a former business partner, Michael Goodwin, charged with the murders. In January 2007, Goodwin was found guilty of two counts of murder in the death of Thompson and his wife. He was sentenced to two consecutive life terms with no chance for parole.
Theresa Stratas appeared at the Met for 36 years. During and afterwards she volunteered with Mother Theresa and another charity to care for dying children. What a wonderful woman! ❤
My Mom went to work at Phillip Morris in 1965 in the labratories and she said they were always trying to make the safest product as possible her and her co-workers did the best they could and took offence for being labeled as killers.
I was ten years old when this episode aired. I've always loved opera, but I wouldn't have known Teresa Stratas at the time. I have since seen her as Marenka in a 'Live from the Met' broadcast of 'The Bartered Bride' and on DVD as the Mother in 'Amahl and the Night Visitors', and she was wonderful in both roles. And she was right: the Met moved to Lincoln Center in 1966, when I had the pleasure of attending a performance of 'The Magic Flute'.
Dorothy looked great and I don't blame her one bit for wanting to show off her figure. It's a shame that she had so many personal problems that led to her untimely death a few years later.
Wow, the promo line in the Salem commercial was priceless. Springtime freshness? Is it a cigarette or a fabric softener? Big fan of What's My Line and Dorothy Kilgallen. She was endearing and I felt bad for her first round fumble. But she clearly knows her stuff and what questions to ask, even 'illegal' ones.
Dorothy was clearly out of her element here, but it was her first and I believe only appearance on TTTT. Someone obviously told her after the first game to write the number larger indicating her vote. That was cute how she wrote it (tiny and in the corner) for the first game. :)
I don't think people have any idea of how difficult it is to go on a panel show with this kind of format. Wasn't she a panelist on "What's My Line"? "What's My Line" is just a couples party game.
I think she was treated badly while on this show. That rule about speaking a language applies to speaking it, not reciting a few words from memory. And I have never heard "Don Jose" or "mantilla" pronounced like that by anyone with any knowledge of the language. I assume the idea is the same as the horrible prononciation of "Don Quixote" if referring to Byron's poem instead of Cervantes' novel, but in the productions of Carmen I've never heard "Don Jose" pronounced like that.
I think I agree with what was posted on an earlier video of this show: the panelist are not all given the same amount of time to answer their questions, as Johnny Carson found out here in the third game. I just timed that game and Dina got 48 seconds, Tom 49, Dorothy 57 and Johnny 38. Of course, there were audience interruptions for laughter or applause, but that should be accounted for.
I love these videos. I'm Spanish and never saw all these classics USA tv shows. They were fun and great. Thanks for share them. By the way... Dorothy was right. The name "José" is pronunced "Ho-se" not "Yo-se"...
No, Dorothy Kilgallen was wrong, as Bud Colyer pointed out in the video clip, and Miss Kilgallen gracefully acknowledged her mistake. The opera was in written in French, not Spanish. It was Tom Poston who said he didn't like the way Theresa Stratas pronounced something, even though it was Dorthy Kilgallen that asked if Stratas had deliberately mispronounced the name.
If I had been Dorothy Kilgallen this would have been my first and last appearance! Did she ask that little snip if The Met pronounces "mantilla" like that too?
I thought Bud was very rude to Dorothy. "We don't treat guest like that here, " he says after her question. Just another smart woman that Bud was intimidated by and had to put in her place, I guess. Bud was a total jerk!! He acted all nice to others, but he made enough comments to Polly that were rude that I know just who he was- a male chauvanist.
3:00 The Met used to be at 7th at 39th-40th, i.e. where Port Authority is. #2 knew it was moving to Lincoln Center.so she's my guess. It actually moved there in 1966, and can be seen in the opening credits for That Girl. 3:16 That's ridiculous Dorothy's first TTTT question was disqualified by Bud for a stupid reason. Update and spoiler: I was right! They all knew a lot about Opera though!
Actually, the Port Authority is on Eighth Ave at 40-42 St. An office building replaced the old Met. Teresa Stratas became one of the Met's greatest stars
So much has changed in the last 50 years with regard to tobacco, I wonder what will be uncovered in the next 50 years about fluoride being added to our water and toothpaste!
Fluiride was first added to public water supplies in 1962 when I was nine years old. Have been drinking it since, I have no health problems, heart disease, high blood pressure, obesity, etc. Guess it is okay.
Dorothy certainly had her "grilling mode" in this first (and only) appearance as a panelist. The audience seemed to be especially noisy and restless during this taping.
It was the subject of an episode of 48 Hours. The man who ordered the murders of Mickey and Trudy Thompson was Michael Goodwin, who is 76 years old and serving his sentence in a California prison. The actual hitmen were never located.
Dorothy is having a bad day at work! 😎. She didn't laugh at her co-worker's joke, she broke some rule in front of her boss and she made a fool out of herself with her mispronounciation!! 😎😎😎 I know exactly how she feels...😝

Ah, the days when commercials were only 10% of a show instead of 33% to 40%.

Dorothy: "Have you ever raced abroad?" followed by Johnny's interpretation as "raced A BROAD." It took a minute before Dorothy got it.

Ah, so the person I think is a little snip became a prima donna! Figures.
Dorothy looked stunning in that dress.
Martin S Dorothy was HOT!!! I don't know why everyone trashes her looks.
Dorothy looked great and I don't blame her one bit for wanting to show off her figure. It's a shame that she had so many personal problems that led to her untimely death a few years later.
The color of her dress highlights her skin tone here. She's a real Tomcat.

what a show, Micky Thompson and Dorothy Kilgallen and Johnny Carson on Panel.
Tom has a beautiful voice, actually.

@Brad James I agree. No wonder she didn't go back on the show. Her question was perfectly legitimate.
I don't think people have any idea of how difficult it is to go on a panel show with this kind of format. Wasn't she a panelist on "What's My Line"? "What's My Line" is just a couples party game.

@@marthahanley6650 I don't see that either game is inferior to the other, but apparently you do. Enjoy yourself.
Dorothy Kilgallen was okay, She is more with it on What's My Line. Teresa Stratas was a great opera singer. Thanks for the video.
Ms. Stratas has worked for many years as a volunteer feeding the sick and the poor...
@@randysills4418 Of course that makes up for her bad manners here.

It is so weird to see cigarette commercials!
Those three commercials were very interesting. So different than nowadays.

And the commercials are fantastic. In particular the special effects, such as stop motion products and the hug in loop on the last one.
In Spanish, it is "Ho-se," but the opera "Carmen" is written in French, so it is pronounced "Zho-se."

Tom Poston can be so rude and tactless. What a jerk.
You are not suppose to ask that. I never heard anything like that on a game show. I THINK IT BS.
