i think it's more of an awareness issue than him being underrated. those familiar with him and his music don't underrate him. but i get what you mean.

I know Lynard Skynard were huge fans of The Allman Bros. They even sound a little alike at certain times. Both Southern Rock Bands, but the Allmans were clearly the better Band. Lead singer Ronnie Van Zant almost worshiped Greg and Duane Allman. Skynard definatly was influenced by The Allman Bros. They even said so, and were proud of it.

On Skynard's "Dont Ask No Questions" there a line that says "What's your favorite color, and do you dig the brothers..." examples of the stupid questions they always get asked. Of course they dig the brothers....Allman, that is.

You have just been washed clean by some of the purest, most magical music ever played! Make no mistake, this was Duane’s band. We were just blessed to have two of the greatest guitarists of all time in the same band! You have 6 more tunes on Fillmore East to go, then jump straight to “Eat a Peach”

I'd love to see you react to ''Dreams'' by the Allman Brothers. One of their finest tunes, very similar in arrangement to Miles Davis' ''All Blues''. The studio version is amazing, because Duane's guitar & slide guitar solo are breathtakingly beautiful. It was the highlight of the album. The song was always a highlight of their live shows as well. For a live version I'd reccomend the version from the Atlanta International Pop Festival, on July 3 1970.

This is a masterpiece where the sum of the parts elevate it beyond the grasp of their contemporaries. As Duane Allman was only 24 when he passed and Greg was a couple of years younger than Duane, you can never tell what might have been, but Duane was far from his peak.
An old joke about Eric Clapton and Jerry Garcia.
Jerry and Eric were captured by cannibals.
The cannibals had a boiling pot ready. Jerry said, "don't we get a final request?" The Chief answered, okay. Jerry said, "I would like to listen to the Grateful Dead Anthology collection.", Eric said, "Cook me first."

Hey, Bro...from what I read Dickie Betts who wrote this song incorporated some of Miles Davis' "All Blues". I believe you are now ready for the creme de la creme..."Mountain Jam" from "Eat A Peach" album which was from the Fillmore East dates. 33+ minutes. Duane's slide playing after the drum solo is just plain masterful.

From "Rock 'n' Blues Stew II": In what may be one of the greatest jazz-influenced instrumentals of our time, “In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed” was immortalized during this show, although it’s really a mix of two sets. Dickey opens with delicate volume control to raise and drop swells of notes like heaving ocean waves, and the opening twin guitar statement is displayed on an invisible curtain of melody. His solo is heavy again with sustained bars, and then Gregg rips the keys off his B-3 while the drummers snap back their answers. The studio version had Jaimoe on congas, but this set gave him space to lay down barrages on his kit to off-set Butch. Their timing and synchronicity was magnificent. Duane picks up the cue from Dickey and hurls a torrent of notes into the air with phrases that are embedded with jazz motifs. He ends with an explosion that sounds like an Atlantic hurricane hitting the beach.

Totally agree with Steve. Although this is a rare exception because of the perfection of the Allman Brothers live and this song which was meant to be live and probably the best live performance ever, at least for me. One of the rare times I’ve bought the album when it came out, put it to cassette for the car then The CD and to digital today and still listening. But I do have all the Allman Brothers Albums of course. This song of all though still gives me chills and the reason I came here. New to reaction RUclips and searching for this song. It shocks me there are few reactions so thank you!! Long live ABB and Elizabeth Reed!

It's rare that you hear Greg stepping out like that on the B3. Guitars of course are both out of this world. One sound that always brings it right to Allman Bros-ville is that constant wash from the two ride cymbals. edit - SB says something, and it made me think. He says "Can you imagine going through your everyday moves while this is playing?" It would have to make you a better person. You go through your day hearing 'Fuk this fuk that, Ho, b*tch" it will shape and turn you. But you hear "Eliz. Reed", it's got to enter your spirit for sure. Just thinking out loud... I just got to Duane's solo - Holy crap, that is from Mars!

Please don't diminish their musicianship and quality of orchestration by calling them a southern rock band. No other rock band from the south, or California, or the northeast put together such marvelous melodies combining twin lead guitars twin drums a brilliant bassist and a virtuoso on organ and vocals in such intricate jazz and blues with the gospel like organ and harmonica backgrounds and interludes. The Outlaws, Marshall Tucker, Skynyrd, Charlie Daniel's, Elvin Bishop, Grinderswitch et. al. were southern rockers, and I liked their music...but it was a completely different genre. Thanks, mal

When you're done with Fillmore East, if you want to hear another track with Duane Allman at his most awe-inspiring, try Boz Scaggs's "Loan Me a Dime" (studio version from Boz's first solo album). It really is good advice to listen to the studio version first, because that is the one everyone heard first and was made popular. A lot of Live/ in concert versions of songs, turn into something that barely resembles the original, therefore you really have never heard the song itself. Live concert versions, sometimes end up being better than the studio cut, but other times, the live version turns into a rambling, unrecognizable jam session, that just ruins it. It can go either way. Studio first, then if there is a live version, you now have something to compare it to.
I'm so glad your back Bro! I always feel like it's just me and a buddy listening to classic Rock tunes, and Exchanging thoughts and ideas over a Beer. I actually used to do exactly that with an old friend of mine, almost every Sunday night. He moved to Belize about 20 yrs ago, so we just talk online off and on. You sort of fill the gap . They had such great and unselfish guitar players. Yes Dickie Betts plays guitar. You wonder why he would stay in a Band that featured Duane Allman. Both Alpha guitarists, but secure enough to play together without being jealous of one another. Butch Trucks , the same thing. Crazy talent in this Band. You find out how all of these Bands seem to influence, and even play on each other's records etc. It's like a journey through Rock/Blues history.

I was recently watching your Allman Brothers review (In memory of Elisabeth Reed), after just stumbling on to your site. Liked your review and approach, so I subscribed.
This version from Fillmore East is their best, but you need to check out another version. I am not asking to have you give or do a reaction - just listen to it in your own time and then after you listen to this Acoustic cut that I think you will appreciate their talent even more. Acoustic - In Memory of Elizabeth Reed - Allman Brothers Band off "the 2nd set Album" Live.
    ruclips.net/video/sTFm9gFz3_w/видео.html
Here is a foot note on who "Elizabeth Reed" is and how the composition came about. In the early days of the Allman Brothers Band, they would frequent Rose Hill Cemetery to relax and write songs. In 1970, guitarist Dickey Betts composed ‘In Memory of Elizabeth Reed,’ the band’s first instrumental.
Elizabeth Jones Reed was a young Southern belle when she attended Wesleyan College in Macon, Georgia. She married Confederate Army Captain Briggs Hopson Napier on April 26, 1865 and had 12 children but three died before reaching adulthood. They were farmers, Briggs Napier served for a period as the Editor for the Monroe County Newspaper, and they ran and operated a local pub in Macon in the early 1900s. Elizabeth Reed’s grave in Rose Hill Cemetery is located not far from the graves of Allman Brothers Band members Berry Oakley and Duane Allman.

On the Mountain Jam playing, you asked which was Guitar solo was who. Note Duane is always o. The Left channel (stereo) his sound is full round with sometimes tight compression (fuzz). Dickey’s sound more clear crisp even twangy. Of course Duane’s slide is itself incredible. His favorite albums were Mike’s Davis “Kind of Blue” and a John Coltrane “ My Favorite Things” .
Checkout Duane Allman’s Anthology. (And Two) Put together after his death. Also he plaid on The complete album Derek and The Dominoes, Layla. And many more

Both the Grateful Dead and the Allman Brothers were fantastic bands for sure. But to me there are a couple reasons I like the Allman Brothers a lot more. The Allman Brothers had a more hard Electric Blues serious type of sound I believe. And the Allman Brothers had Gregg Allman one of the greatest singers in rock history. Also the Allman Brothers have a lot of very good songs. When Duane was alive I think they were the best American band ever. After he died they were still one of the best and gave us over 40 years of incredible music.

Real quick, besides the song, which the instrumental is better then Beethoven's 5th, your review and the way you deliver the background to the song and the album and the band is, first rate! I graduated high school I 1973. I know everything about the rock bands in late 60's theand 70's, but I didn't know that...I find myself saying that a lot lately..I guess that wasn't "real quick"... thank you for the insight. Now I know everything. Until the next review ...

The Miles Davis song you might be referring to is "Milestones"-- I only know this because I'm a musician, and I've played both before-- they're both in minor keys, with nearly identical chord progressions .
Another couple of smokin instrumental by the Allmans:
    Hot 'Lanta
    Les Brers in A minor
Mountain Jam ( live version from the Fillmore)

Ok! The best live version is the Fillmore East, March 12&13, 1971. You have to buy the album, The Allman Brothers Band At Fillmore East as all musicians and fans state it is the best live album ever performed and it is better than this 1970 concert! Please!

I saw them in early 71 in Berkeley. As good as the Fillmore East Live album only better to be there because you hear every instrument and sound!!! So much music in each song and the soul/jazz and passion all wrapped into one full experience!!! More than amazing!!! Saw so many of these bands live in the 70's and early 80's.

I always enjoy your reactions. You are honest and insightful. You have probably already been told this but just in case. The Allman Brothers Band (ABB) Duane Allman - Lead and slide guitars (vocal on one song not on this album but on an expanded version of it), Gregg Allman - Keyboards and vocals on most songs, Dicky Betts - Lead Guitar and vocals on some songs, Barry Oakley - bass, Jai Johanny “Jaimoe” Johanson - drums and percussion, Butch trucks - drums, Tom Douchette plays harmonica on this album as well but was not a regular member of the band. Duane and Barry both died young. Duane was killed in a motorcycle accident shortly after this album was released. Barry was killed a year later one block away from that scene in Macon Ga. Their signature sound was achieved by the two lead guitars playing off of one another and the use of the organ to transition in songs. The mixed blues and jazz into a rock-n-roll fusion. Duane Allman is considered the GOAT of slide guitarist to this day.

Betts apparently used Miles Davis's All In Blue" as inspiration, from what I've read. So many great ABB songs.

Hmmm, so that is the whole story! I must say that while I love Boz Scaggs, Dickie Betts is a pretty good lookin' man! I have to choose The Allman Brothers over The Grateful Dead, based on the fact that I have spent more money on Allman Bros. CDs than the Dead. Zeplin is all top ten. All thrills, no fills.

Gregg playing the Hammond B-3 takes me back. Makes me think of Felix Cavalari and the Rascals. Oh boy you can always tell when Duane comes in (at 12:35). He always plays like he is late for something important and is trying to make up lost time. He's always pushing. I've never heard that from another guitar player. Sometimes Eric can get after it, but the closest has to be the guy that took his place, Derek Trucks. Derek plays like he's late too.
There has never been a player like Duane. His friendship with Eric lead to the album Derek and the Dominoes Layla and other love songs. The expanded version had all the jams these guys would do while trying to get the album off the ground. Many people in and around the project said there wouldn't have been a Layla album if it weren't for Duane.
Well back to Live at the Fillmore East The band recorded everyday for four straight days as they were the band that Bill Graham wanted to close down the Fillmore East. They would come on at 9 or 10 o'clock and would play until the sun came up. Now that was not much different for this band than they would normally do.3-4 hr. concerts was not unheard of. They would never play the same show two times in a row either. They would change the lineup of songs. Then the songs that were featured the one night might not even be on the set list for that next night. Also since they were a jam band the songs that were played long one night might be playing as a stock version that next night.
Thanks Big Guy for your reactions. You always seem to have something to say that gives us all something to think about.

Great review thanks, as for comparing the Allmans with the Dead I don't think its a question with an answer, personally I prefer the Allmans but that's my preference, it depends what you are into, I guess I'm an Allmans nerd, just bought the complete Filmore recordings made over 4 nights I think and I would highly recommend it not only is it a great recording but you get to hear how things developed over the nights they played, buy it, dont understand why you are not getting more of a following, seem genuine to me ,unlike many others, hey Rory Gallagher or early Alex Harvey, Faith healer etc, keep it up

Grateful Dead/Allman Brothers: Both live, as you say, were in their true element. I wouldn't say one was better than the other, but they did have a different approach to some degree. The ABB had more of a structure to their improvisations in that during the improve areas, they had several avenues they could travel, particularly in the Duane era, yet they'd always come out with a structured ending, such as here on Elizabeth Reed you have the melody, the 16 measure drum solo, then a return to the melody. The 'Dead were a lot looser than that. More often than not, in a 'Dead jam the setlist was virtually tossed out the window, If they were doing Truckin' it would usually evolve into Epilog but tomorrow night it might go into Jack Straw, and the next night into New Speedway Boogie. the 'Dead were strictly seat of the pants. Anything could happen at any time and anything they were doing could go anywhere at any time. With the Allmans you would have a song like "You Don't Love Me" and in the jam, it could go any which way with various sections every night, however, it always came back to the end, which again may have improvisation within it, a little different every time, but it was the recognizable book end. The 'Dead were more free form, almost like walking the high wire without a net. It didn't always work, however, no matter if it crashed and burned (not often) or soared to heights never seen before, as a musician I can't help but have boatloads of respect them for taking that chance! I wouldn't say one was better than the other, they just had two related, yet different approaches. And yes, they did jam together on several occasions. Ones that I recall were RFK '73 and Watkins Glen a few months later. There were also a few times in San Francisco while Duane was still alive. Thanks! I love your page!

If you look at the photo at the beginning of this reaction, you'll notice that Dickie Betts is hidden behind Gregg's hat. Unfortunately, he never got enough credit. And the groove behind the organ solo was fucking awesome!!

The grateful dead and the allmans were great friends, Duane allman loved jerry garcia and vice-versa, they jammed together a few times before and after Duane's death. Owsley "bear" stanley not only produced the lsd for millions of people during this time he also is responsible for the major improvement in sound engineering at the time. Stanley recorded every show. That is why these great recordings exist and are better than any other bands at the time.for me I love both bands but the grateful dead for me, with garcia, called " the miles davis of guitar" along with brilliant lyrics of robert hunter will never be surpassed or duplicated.

Love the transition midway into the uptempo shuffle. The drummers really got off on that, you can hear it like a magic carpet ride. I heard Butch Trucks mention that in an interview how he and Jai loved shuffle drumming.
