gugel akaunt I think he's saying it was a good decision for both parties. Dream theater wanted someone who could commit 100% to dream theater, and marco wanted to be able to do all the stuff he was involved in (the aristocrats, Steven Wilson, his solo stuff).
I can imagine that Marco is being pretty honest about it not being his thing, but man, he would have lit a much needed fire up Dream Theater's asses. Mangini is great, but he's too cerebral, just like the rest of the band. Portnoy was the rock and roll in Dream Theater and that was an essential ingredient in their classic sound. Now they've become too sterile.
I think the main reason why Marco did not join DT is that he has multiple projects going on all the time, and has no intention of dedicating only to Dream Theater. And to be honest that would be a waste of Marco's talent, he's not only a great drummer but also a pretty good composer/multi instrumentalist.
@@carlosardegna210 a lot of stuff from the Aristocrats were written by him. Obviously not note by note, that's more of a group work, but the songs idea and flow
This was a good listen (as the video was sideways and I couldn’t really watch it). All those who auditioned were grateful for doing it, and learned a lot. I On the same hand, they’re also glad they didn’t get it. Dream Theatre is a tough act and while they all could’ve done it, they’re just fine doing what they’re doing now. I saw The Aristocrats in my town not too long ago and Marco was having the time of his life.
Marco is the bomb,,, Mangini fits DT really well. He does not bring the same feel as Portnoy, but he is a different drummer, so that is expected to happen. Lang and the others tried to add too much of their solo style into the songs and it changed the feel of the band for the other musicians. Mangini is very orchestrated and follows the other parts really well. That is what set him apart from the other drummers. What Marco seems to be talking about is the conversations they had as part of the interview process, he was not actually "picked and refused." It was discussed that he would probably not fit the bands lifestyle before any decisions were made. Mangini is absolutely the right choice for DT. If you have ever studied Mangini, he is one of the greatest drummers in the world. The science behind how he plays and the way he writes parts to match the different instruments in the songs creates,,,, dare I say it,,,,, the sound DT was originally suppose to have. Portnoy was a crazy and new excitement when he was playing with them, and when you grow with other musicians, the magical sound is created because you leaned and grew together as song writers. That is something that you cannot capture without growing together. To take a band as complicated as DT is and incorporate a new KEY player is going to have an effect, but the band as a whole has done a phenomenal job of keeping the ball rolling. I am so proud of DT and love everything they have to offer the musical world. All the hate of them not being the same is unreasonable. If you have ever been in a band, you know that the sound of a band creates itself from the members that are in it. So when you change a very integral part of the band of course it is going to be different. Us as fans need to learn to adapt and enjoy the wonderful music they are creating, as the band adapted to playing with a new member after 25 years of playing, learning and growing with the original drummer.
I find it funny/weird though that he clearly enjoyed the 3 songs (that are "the only 3 DT songs he ever heard" as he put it here), especially The Dance of Eternity, and yet wasn't curious to check out some more of DT's material. I mean, usually, if I like something, I'd want to check out more of it, but maybe I'm just weird...

Clearly not a good fit for DT. Portnoy is twice as busy as Marco and always has time to listen to and discover new music and movies. I also question his passion for music if he doesn’t even know the music of his Lord and Savior John Petrucci.
They went with Mike Mangini because he played the songs exactly as they were written, and they even mentioned that in the audition video. When they play live, they stand there unmoving, playing it note-for-note with no emotion and Marco is a very expressive player, adding embellishments as he sees fit, and that doesn't mesh with the robotics needed for Dream Theater.
The irony is that Minnemann wouldve been an excellent fit with the band. Mangini did a great job over the years, but I think Minnemann could've done some really crazy and great stuff with the guys.
It was not an audition. Just a tv show like Popstars or shit like that. Everything was scripted its obvious when you see this very bad acting of Mangini when he "learn" he's the new drummer. It's grotesque, ridiculous and disgusting.
