    I'm back at another really unique location. This time we are checking out the Mahanoy Train tunnel. This tunnel is very unique as its rail line is still in active use but the fan houses are now abandoned. I flew my drone around the front portal and then we ventured all the way through it and found some unique things inside. Enjoy

    Was worried we'd hear a train whistle at any moment and couldn't believe you turned around and walked BACK thru ! ( was hoping you had a car parked on the other side.)Did enjoy the trip back though. You must not be claustrophobic if you wanted to explore that ventilation shaft ! Had no idea it was so huge until you showed Kyle along the wall...gigantic in there . That was a surprise . Thank you for showing that. Heard "Dawn 's voice " at 25:01 ...amazing . I really enjoyed this tour.

    Reminds me of when Mom needed to get to the hospital to have her 5th kid. I was 10 yrs. old ,the 2 boys were 9 & the next one was just over 2. The old man had taken the car were ever that morning & Mom went into labor . So we all had to walk down the train tracks & across the trestle. Mom told us that if we heard the train coming we should jump without even thinking about it , because it was better to have a broken bone or 2 than be dead. The baby was a girl.

    I actually slept there in one of those little shack’s by the opening of the tunnel for I think, 2 or 3 nights. I was hitchhiking through the area in 2016, and I found this place.
    I thought it was interesting and convenient. There was a spring where I got my water, and I had a couple days of food. It was rainy, and I was tired from my travels. That’s why I stayed for 2 or 3 days.
    From there, I hung around Mahanoy city, sleeping in the woods or under bridges. It’s one of my favorite areas of Pennsylvania. The spring of 2016 is a fond memory to me.

    The side of the fan with the access door is the fan intake and the other side would have been covered.
    Otherwise it would have dragged in the smoke it was designed to dispel.
    The ducting you saw is to chanel the fresh air into the tunnel portal.

  • @anthonydavis9662

    Hey JP, nice video; I just saw this one. Just one small suggestions: a "mine shaft" is a very specific thing. It's a vertical tunnel serviced by a pulley or rope/cable system. You'll almost never come across them in Northeastern deep mining because their lateral geographic footprint is so small. What you were looking at was best described as a "slope" or, more generically, "workings". "Stopes" are indeed mined-out areas like the places supported by "stulls" or timbers. Mine explorers like us use these specific terms to transmit specific information. So you may want to update your terminology if you haven't already; I know this is 3 years old. :)

    That tunnel not only goes under Rt. 54 and I-81, it doesn't exit until it goes under Buick Mountain Rd as well. Using the distance marker on the Google Map air view, it looks like the tunnel is about 5000 ft. long.

    I would be scard to death going threw that tunnel. I hope a train will not come, there is no room on the sides. Get going to get to the other end, man you make me nervous. Man that is really something of the mining days. Those men worked so darn hard with all the digging. I am surprised that the train does not leave any sparks that would cause a fire for the exposed coal. Its a good thing a train didn't pass threw no where to run. GoodJP

    • @kathleenhart4939
      @kathleenhart4939 5 лет назад

      Yes, I knew about it but I never went through the tunnel. If I remember correctly it connects to some tracks down off of route 222 I think, it's been a long time past for me to remember the exact route. They used fans when steam engines ran to help the engineer from choking to death from all the smoke inside the tunnel. It is part of the Reading Railroad line, there should be some abandoned railroad cars down off of route 222. Take a ride or look at a map, just continue away from Mahanoy City on 54 and go through some of the real small towns down a large hill on the right side there were abandoned cars, passenger and some freight cars, at least there were???

  • @raymondleggs5508
    @raymondleggs5508 5 лет назад

    You can look at the railheads to see if a railway is abandoned or not. if the heads are shiny, its not abandoned, if its all rusty its unused, or used very little. Especially if there is growth between the rails.
