I find my admiration for Antonio Vivaldi 2 month ago, the Winter Concerto opened my emotions in such a good brutality which were so long closed, after I had to make a difficult decision. My first tears since years.
The lack of bass makes it more prickly, like ice and snow crackling in the winter. Dropping the bass also makes it more ungrounded, like winter frost setting in and killing all the flowers.
The score, which you can see in this video, is actually edited. Originally, in baroque music, usually only one line in bass clef is notated. This is the line you can see here as the Cembalos left hand. The bass instruments (cello, double bass, bassoon etc) play the same, and the numbers show the cembalos right hand. In this case, the editor didn't want the double bass to play as much as the other bass instruments.

The Double Basses can be tuned an Octave below the Cellos which gives them an Option to play in unison w/ the Cellos more easily.

It was played by Julia Fischer. She is a virtuoso, which explains why it is faster than it should be.
Theres no fixed speed for these. Vivaldi just species Allegro or whatever
