- Ted Juracsik, the creator of Tibor Reels, has one of the most interesting and inspiring stories I know. As a young Hungarian in Budapest, he was the smartest of his friends. At age 17, he was the youngest Hungarian ever to be awarded Master Papers and went to work in a bicycle factory. Not long after the Hungarian revolution began and was in full swing against the Russians and Soviet Union, Ted escaped to Austria. Leaving his family and his sister behind, the big world of the unknown was before him.
Eventually, he immigrated to the the United States and started a successful tool and dye business. One day in the World Wide Sportsman store, he met Billy Pate who needed a better fly reel to fight the monster Tarpon he was chasing in Homosassa. Ted told him he could design a better reel for him and the rest is history. The Tibor Reel company became the salt water fly reel of choice for all the world record chasers for the next few decades.
On todays podcast, we travel with Ted through his legendary life and the hardships along the way.

Ted’s story is the story of America. My Tibor Everglades has been a trusted friend for 20 years.
Such a wonderful human being Ted is. I love seeing and hearing him again and feel quite fortunate to have had him and his daughter on board many years ago. Such a great spirit and keeper of the light.
Andy, I think we all got choked up with his incredible story of survival, just incredible. Great job again guys, I feel enlightened. We’re a better Country with his presence and your show here tells the tale, well done.
Hey Andy my name is Paul Manoogian I was at the BTT Symposium a few days ago and saw you speak. I about lost it when you lost it on the legends panel. Thank you so much! for documenting all of these stories for kids like me who are coming up into the world of fishing and for selflessly devoting your time and energy to the project. I'm not sure I would've known as many people as I did at the symposium if it wasn't for watching every single one of your podcasts. I've learned a lot about life not just fishing from them all. Thank you for all that you and Nicky are doing. Sitting down now to listen to this episode! Can't wait!
Fishing 10K saved me from substance addiction, it was the only thing that tugged on me harder. About 3 years in u got into fly fishing. I was at a Shop and I saw my first Tibor (Everyone I knew at the time was fishing Nautilus) and I knew I had to have one. About a year later I got my first a Graphite Gulfstream....then my second an Aqua Everglades....then my third a Satin Gold Riptide....then too many to count. I don't get out as much as I used to but I still handle my Tibor's daily. I've owned lots of special, expensive stuff but NOTHING is as special to me as ANY of my Tibor's. They'll be with me for the rest of my life, even if I never set foot on a skiff again. There's something about this special man I've never met that resonates with me on a level that's hard for me to explain other than to say I've never felt "Honored" to spend money on anything other than my Tibor's. God bless Ted, he's everything right with the lifestyle and sport we all love and a man ANYONE should aspire to be like.
Well said . He’s a hero of mine .
Truly your most enlightening, enjoyable, and inspirational interviews of all time. This is the most genuine of all the human beings I have seen interviewed to date. Most fly fishing "gurus" you interview have an undertone of arrogance about them, or strive to portray the spiritual or esoteric value of what they do; almost like they're striving to leave a legacy. During interviews, people also tend to inflate or flex their own intellect. Genuine human beings don't talk like that as they go about their daily lives ; genuine human beings speak and act like Ted did in this interview. Mundane things, like fixing a broken bolt in a boat manifold because "some idiot messed it up", reminds me of a casual conversation with my grandfather.
This was a great interview of one of the most important figures in saltwater fly fishing. I work in the fly fishing industry and people constantly ask me, "What are the best saltwater reels?" My answer is always, "Buy a Tibor." Knowing the man behind the product makes each reel that much more special. Thanks Andy!
Enjoyed this episode so much . Mr. Juracsik’s story is amazing......an amazing person. Thank you.
Of all the fantastic content y’all have produced on this show, this one is really special. Keep up the great work! What a fantastic story this man has lived.
This will be one of the most fascinating podcast interviews you ever produce. A true survivor. A lot of familiar stuff in this interview, we fished Commercial and Pompano piers often in the early 70s....a little different world there now. What a gem Ted is.
Amazing podcast please make a part two with Ted
