Am such a fan of the Sax and it's sound, more string like, vacummed, and inflated with vibration as opposed to the clarinet with more of an strained sharp wind reserved vibrational sound...both beautiful.
+Ian Boyter my father, Lewis, was a hony tonk pianist and I was fascinated by his version of this song as a child, calling it the "Bonnie and Clyde song" (don't know why a four year old would call it that). As an adult I learned how to play it, then did a boogie woogie version I then called the St. Daddy Blues. Nice version
Sir, Ian What a blues. I love it 😍. Got simple system clari given from my late grandfather which he used to play and you have just spark me again. Thank you so much for the motivation 🙏🙏🙏🙏
The clarinet is better. They sound alike but the clarinet just has this romantic and mellow quality that I love! I also love the non metallic sound of it. I'm going to get one soon and I really want to learn how to play it!! Beautiful!!
The clarinet has a type of sound that I really like about it that I can't hear in the saxophone but the saxophone is funky sounding and I like that idk tho I'm not an expert in this things
Man this was a perfect comparison ..I absolutely love your playing, still smiling how you just picked up the clarinet and started playing. I played tenor in high school ( mid 70's) and just picked up a clarinet today ! Can hardly wait to pick up a reed and start playing. I did not think I would like it as well as the sax but watching you play both in this comparison I think it will be very nice indeed. Thank you so much and for the information of the song. Cheers from Alberta Canada.Subbed and hit the alarm.. P.S. you are groovy ;-)
Yes, you probably play the Boehm system. I play the Albert or Simple system. A lot of the early jazz clarinet players in old New Orleans played the Albert system, and I prefer the sound I get from it.
i wanted to learn how to play one of them at least but I'm quite confused which one should i choose, i know sax is easier to learn but still i cant decide!!!!!
I started with saxophone and later learned clarinet and I love them both. Saxophone may be easier to learn, but it takes a lot of practice to master the instrument. For me personally, clarinet was hard to get started but once I got familiar with the embouchure and the break, I got really good really fast. I hope I helped some :)
I think I saw this video b4 I took up clarinet. I play flute and alto sax. I had some Bb sheet music and study aids prior, as didn’t know what I was buying. Now I’m glad I have clarinet, so I can imitate tenor sax instead of carrying two saxes. This video is very helpful in proving what I was curious about - as in whether a clarinet can stand in for a tenor sax. Is it in Bb key?
Soprano clarinet is usually pitched in Bb, but clarinets in A, C etc. are also available. You can play clarinet using the Bb tenor saxophone score, but it will sound an octave higher and you might add some embellishments to the melody. More precisely, though,, the clarinet encompasses the range of both alto and soprano saxophones. So tonally, clarinet is a good substitute for alto AND soprano saxophone, but not quite for the tenor saxophone. Tenor sax sounds an octave lower than the tenor score is actually written in. That is why clarinet and tenor sax work really well in this video above …
wow!!!! really woooww! dont think i will ever be able to play like that! thankyou for posting, where can i get the sheet music for the clarinet part?, thanxz
What's harder to play? I read somewhere that the octave key on the clarinet doesn't exactly deliver an octave up, but instead an octave and a fifth.. so the fingering has to change in the second octave? Also, the clarinet is a transposing instrument. Is the sax as well? Not sure what to play. Thanks for any advice. Beautiful music played on both instruments! Great video.
CL0WN FAC3 Yes, that makes sense. Still, I've been wondering if there's a general consensus among woodwind players on which instrument is more difficult. Perhaps there is no agreement on this, and it totally depends upon the person.
Kerkuil's Channel Yes the clarinet has a 'bridge' between the octaves which effectively means you play a different fingering for each octave. Not so on sax. Choose because you like the instrument, not because of a preference of fingering techniques is my advice.
What an outstanding tone you get from that clarinet! Bluesy as hell. What's the secret? hahahaha. I've read some comments which say that you might be using a clarinet that isn't the current Bb Boehm one. Of course, your playing skills are amazing, that's a big part of the secret, but I'm still curious about the instrument! I hope you find a little spare time to reply. Thank you in advance, Greetings from Spain
Just read that it's an Albert system clarinet in C. Alright then, what are the main differences between an Albert and a Boehm clarinet? Is the sound a little bit brighter? Do you use the same kind of reed? Is it easier to play bendings/glissando on an Albert?
Hi Cristian, thanks for your kind comment. I use a nice old simple system (Albert system) Italian clarinet made by Borgani and a 'Vintage' mouthpiece by Morgan in America. But as you know, the sound you get comes mostly from the way you play, and the sound you aspire to. I listen to the pioneer jazz players from New Orleans and try and emulate the sounds they produce. Greetings from Scotland.
Cristian Palmer Hi again Cristian. Yes, it's an Albert system clarinet. The fingering is different from the Boehm system, and it can be more difficult to play some passages. The reed is the same. The tone can be different, but some Boehm players do get a similar tone. 'Bending' notes is the same.
The difference between Albert and Boehm clarinets is not only the keywork, but the correct intonation, tone stability and pitch. If you get a modern, narrow-bore Boehm clarinet, it will play well in tune first two and half octaves. Alberts don't; they are older instruments with a wider bore, so their tuning is not as good ... but in blues, and jazz, that is a good trait because blues playing is based on off-pitch articulation. Blues requires "sliding" around the correct pitch. Say, if you play low E, modern Boehm clarinet will nail it, and the produced sound won't sound 'bluesy' because it's been hit correctly immediately. Albert clarinet will have issues, it will be off by 15-30%, you will try to correct it with embouchure, and that attempt (articulation) actually sounds 'bluesy'. To use modern Boehm clarinets for blues, you must use a barrel or a mouthpiece that throws the tuning slightly off the mark, and then articulate as if you were using an Albert clarinet. On a tenor saxophone, though, the tuning is always off, and because of the wider tip opening of the mouthpiece, it is easier to articulate for the blues and the jazz. For blues and jazz, last thing you want is to play "well in tune".
I prefer the clarinet. You are very good! Thank you
@Brett Watts Yee me too . I play ,the Clarinet

Acredito que minhas almas anteriores foram todas profissionais da música de instrumentos de sopro.
I’m really wanting to get into playing an instrument and I’m trying to decide between clarinet and saxophone!
`i had the same dilemma when I was 16 and I was advised to take up sax. I have never regretted it. I added clarinet later in life.
Take both.
Thanks ela. I hope you continue to watch my channel. I'm thinking about my next video now.
This is Great Great! Now I know that i must focus on instrument that i have
I've put a website in the description above where you can get the sheet music free.

Different fingerings for each octave.. yikes! I don't want to deal with that. For the most part, I like the sax better anyway. Thanks for your info!
Kerkuil's Channel I played clarinet but switched to sax and the sax is way more fun.
can u give the sheet music
Sorry I don't have it.

is that an albert system clarinet?
Yes it's an Italian Bb clarinet. Borgani. A family firm that only makes saxes now.
Blues....where you can feel so good and not get involved!
Clarinet is like
Is it an alto sax??
No it's a tenor sax
