Fix your broken Mac spacebar all by yourself!

- I had a sticky spacebar and broke it when attempting to clean underneath it. A keyboard repair was ~$600!!! This fix is $25, quick, and super easy. Plus you don't have to be a computer savvy person to do it! Here's how it went for me.

Lifesaver. I yanked it off thinking it would be like any other keycap, moron that i am. Ended up snapping off a few of the tiny horizontal pegs but not as many as you did thankfully so the clips still retained the butterfly without me having to order a new one. The bit of info I needed from this was that the clear plastic clips need to be removed as they fit on top of the butterfly, once I knew that it was a breeze.
Well, almost. During my many attempts to get it back on, I ended up snapping off the hooks on the bottom of the inside of the spacebar, so it wouldn't hook back on at the bottom. Couple of tiny dabs of superglue on the bottom of the butterfly to hold the bottom of the bar in place and success at last.
I've never seen such an unnecessarily overengineered spacebar.

Thank you! Bought a new space + mechanism half a year ago, didn’t do it right. Broke the new clips, didn’t take enough time to do it properly. Your video got me to order a new set and now I did it good. Removed all the two sided tapes and used glue as well. Thank you for your time and effort to help us through the process ❤
This video procedure was better detailed than the others. In particular, it showed me that I did not have the correct bar on the white carriage pointed away from the screen earlier, so the c-shaped barbs could not engage when putting the space bar on. I also found it was not necessary to replace the left and right sticky half barbells in the beginning as was done in the video; I was able to use the old ones by bending one of them up slightly to fit the white carriage back in. Good video.

My spacebar was stuck and I originally followed another tutorial/video on how to remove it and put it back together and couldn't figure out why I wasn't able to put the black plastic back on. Finally a good demonstration of this repair. This is my third attempt. First two I used regular super glue which was harder to work with. Got the gel this time.
One note.. direction of the clear middle piece matters. Test the direction before gluing

This is an underrated video! Best tutorial i’ve found! I followed step by step and , and only on the last clip in i found it not wanting to connect. All i did to find success was hook from top instead of bottom and clip likewise. Maybe they model, maybe the lineup , but a quick way to find the for for you.

THANK YOU! Apple refused to help me since my purchase date was 4 years and 2 weeks post purchase date, and their keyboard replacement program for butterfly keys is only good for 4 years. It would figure that right past that date is when the spacebar went kaput. I was quoted $550 to fix this. Your video was the only one I found that clearly showed, step by step, how to do this. Everyone else basically says its impossible. I bought a replacement key on Amazon for $20, and followed your video. Thankfully the existing glue didn't gunk up on me so I was able to reapply without glue. Thank you so much for posting this!

I watched your video couple days ago and I went to the apple store, they didn't really had idea of how to fixed it because of course it was completely broke and they told me they were going to send it to another place to see if they fixed if, they told me that it could be 600 dls but they were gonna call me if I agree. They never called me, I picked up my computer today and they fixed it for free. It said that Apple covered my repair. I don't know if their Apple Care Service change, but I got it for free. I will recommend that if you have this problem go to an Apple Store to see what they say, idk if I was lucky or if now Apple covers this repairs. But this was going to be my plan B so thank you for the video.

Thank you so much, you saved my life:) I have exact same problem, but I didn't realize I ripped out the butterfly mechanism along with space bar
STEP BY STEP GUIDE:
1. The video is pretty much accurate but missing few key points (follow the instructions in this video!!)
2. Remove broken keycap, hinge.
3. Use %100 alcohol and the box cutter blade or a needle to drop some alcohol between the transparent plastics(x3) and the board for easier and safer removal.
4. Use %100 alcohol to clean the board (I used ear tips) and the blower to remove dirt/stains as well as likely small bits of the broken spacebar. If you don't have a blower, use torch to make sure it's clean.
5. Place the hinge correctly (see in video 2:27 )
6. Clean the transparent plastics(x3) if needed.
7. Positions of the plastics MATTERS (most likely)
--left and right. There're tiny cut outs which will guide you which one goes to which side 3:45 , 3:59 .
If it was for the left side: little cut out would be at the bottom right. Mirror the other side.
SUPER GLUE these parts where double side sticky tapes previously were.
When the glue applied, press firmly on the plastic (I used the blower to speed up), while waiting for the glue to catch use some tool to jiggle the hinge. It should have relevantly lots of backlash.
--middle section. The metal two dot side towards you, single pointy side towards screen. (You can see on the board little wear from the pointy side)
DON'T GLUE middle section. Firmly press on both sides of the button so the 4 pins go back in place.
8. Just wait. Leave the fixed button for at least 10 minutes while the glue doing its job and casually jiggle the hinge (not much backlash at this stage)
9. 10:58 place the keycap as showed in video. You want to hear ALL 4 clicks. Go from the one top side to the other (press really firm until you hear the click.
10. Test it. READ MY STORY:
Spilled a drink. Many of the keys became sticky. Removing keycaps using a guitar pick or a proper tool is very easy (not the spacebar)
When I cleaned for the first time I didn't have %100 alcohol and used hand sanitiser. It didn't work. Still sticky keys.
As per my research, it doesn't matter if you use isopropyl or ethanol. To operate with the substances I used toothpicks and ear tips.
I followed the video and read comments when tried to fix the bar first time. The spacebar went flat with no recoil.
When trying to remove the keycap, broke the clips. (if this is the case for you, search a relevant video how to safely remove the keycap)
On my first attempt I made sure to have an original spacebar. Second attempt, ordered from AliExpress (really same quality)
The reasons of your spacebar not functioning correctly could be: stains on the board, wrong position of the plastics, glued middle section or the pins of the left and/or right transparent plastics, glued hinge (as mentioned jiggle wiggle it slightly during the process), faulty replacement set. If the spacebar seems to stay in place and travels normally, likely you have damaged the logic board.
My space bar now works %100 perfect+.

Every other video has been putting the hinge upside down (opposite of what you did) and have acted like they fixed the spacebar. This is the first vid where you actually restore the movement of the spacebar

my entire bottom hook of the space bar broke, but it still works bc its connected to the top hooks. amazing video. my double sided scotch tape worked just fine. very smart to use the glue tho :)

Ended using fas drying glue (crazy glue) on the three pieces, because mine wouldn't attach, and also tried super thick double sided tape, but didn't work.

I just received my spare parts from China and installed my spacebar. You missed one important thing: when you remove the central transparent bit, it's important you put it back on the same way, so the two metal pins hit the big metal plate.

@@nickapple3788 No, I don't, sorry; but if you look at the parts that will make contact, you should be able to make out which way it goes. My spacebar didn't fix completely, mind you; the far left side of it has a weaker recoil and is unresponsive.

The problem is, it works in any position. After installing the key goes down and stays flat I was just considering if that could be the reason. Maybe, maybe not or maybe f@ck apple (no abuse XD). New set comes sometime in September wish me luck. Guess that's all I need. If somehow it works after all I'll post my personal instruction on all those smart ass videos, pretty sure plenty of people still having the exact issue. TC
@@nickapple3788 It's incredibly frustrating - I know exactly how you feel.
The central bit being correctly aligned is not absolutely essential; I think it will work even if you install it incorrectly, but without the proper installation set you will not be able to fix your space bar because some small parts of it that create the recoil have broken off.
Apple had a law suit for their butterfly key design. It was a class action settlement. They compensated all buyers who had declared issues with their keypads $125. They sent us all cheques in the mail. I paid mine in last week. (I had returned it to Apple seven years ago for repair because the spacebar stopped working.)
@@maciej.ratajczak I’ve heard of the lawsuit of course. And about issues with the butterfly keyboard but I needed the most powerful intel based mac. At least you got some bonus xD. If you’re taking about those little pins (which I figured %100 important to recoil) then obviously new set would have it done. Not sure what else I could break. No even a theory
Unforfunately, it doesn't work for me. I've tried all tuto on youtube, and nothing. The single crochets don't want to stay in place. They did not want to hang on the background. Each time, the double crochets hangs well, but the single get stuck in tne small iron rods. However, I use glue, but the white bar does not hold at the bottom on the background.

But I dont get it ? You remove the transparant 3 pieces , add the amazon plastic and then add those 3 pieces back. Afterwards you add another 3 layers of transparent stuff . What is that ?
Maybe the transparent stuff you’re describing is the super glue? I originally tried double sided tape but it didn’t work well. So I removed it and switched to super glue on the clear pieces so they stuck better. But be sure not to accidentally glue the butterfly mechanism down too.

Does the clear pieces hold the butterfly mechanism in place? When I put the clear pieces on mine the butterfly mechanism comes right off
It seems like that middle part that holds the part in the center is stuck with glue, will it come right off if I pry it? That's about the only thing getting in the way of my spacebar repair. Thank you for the video, I'm in the same boat and have to either chuck out 600$ for a keyboard replacement or do it myself

There are little hooks on the plastic space bar that snap onto the bars of the butterfly mechanism :) is this what you meant?
@@MovewithMEvideos So the butterfly came of together with the spacebar top and the little hinges got broken BUT I've sent my mac to iSpot support and they've replaced the whole top case in that keyboard replacement programme. I'm not sure if this video would still apply to the new keyboard, had I need take any keys out again. Thanks for responding tho :)

hi this has been rly helpful, i could finally get to see the inside. The problem with mine mac is that i can see the right side glue is off. But i haven't taken the whole key down, as the left side is fine and glued. What would you suggest me to do? thank you again.
Oooh tough call. Def your choice if you want to pull the key off and try fixing it as a whole? Or waiting till it eventually all comes off? I wouldn’t try to glue half of the key while the other half is attached still. May cause more of a mess than you’d be fixing.

This video is definitely the most helpful of all that I looked at. As a person with ADHD, it was hard to be patient through some of the troubleshooting details, but it was sooo worth it. These instructions are complete.
The liquid bandaid was really useful for me because I did need to redo after adhering them a first time, and they pulled up. Also, I initially couldn't find this video again and put a tad bit of adhesive too close to the magnetic center and had to quickly get acetone to dissolve.

Bro same. Read 100 comments. Apparently you have to be lucky to glue transparent pieces at very precise points. I’ve ordered my second bar have to keep gambling to save the whole workstation

A drop of %100 alcohol spreads out and removes adhesives. Just use any thin metals to slightly pry from any edge and slowly work your way through. I used tooth pick to drop alcohol
