I've been building ponds since the 80's and you are one of the most professional, helpful, creative installers I've ever seen! I love your eye for aesthetics, your attention to detail and job site cleanliness, and the fact that you're willing to give away advice (instead of making it "secret", so no one will "steal" your secrets!). I hope you are covered up with business!! And don't forget, when you get busier than you want to be, raise your rates by 10-20% so that you'll work more profitably, not harder!
no videos for parts 2, 14 and 17 even with out them I learned a lot , and i loved how professional you and your crew were and how much you put into the detail of your work thanks for sharing
Hi Eric, just wanted to thankyou for the great series on pond building. I'm a single fifty something woman and got inspiration from your show and now have two great ponds. I enjoy them all the time and everyone is impressed. I always tell them to watch yourr show to see how its done. My ponds have been running for a couple years now with no problems. THANKS
Thank you so much for sharing Nancy! I am thrilled that our efforts on these tutorial videos have inspired you. Sharing with your friends is the highest compliment!
I watched this series about 2 years ago basically lusting over the Pond, just bought my first house so looks like I'm going to give it a bash, thank you for an incredibly clear tutorial.
I watched all these videos when I originally did my first pond in 2014 and just rewatched them in anticipation of expanding the pond this year. Great stuff, I know I'll be referring back to them plenty. Thank you!!
I'm completely blown away by this series. Eric and his crew are true artists. I'm about to launch my own 4000+ gallon pond from scratch, and I intend to copy much of what they demonstrated. Thank you for this truly great series.
Thank you! I'm building my first pond, and this entire series was incredibly informative and educational, and helped me get over a few areas where I was hesitant. My pond is now up and running and I'm adding the edging and plants. Thank you for all the tips and help. You're definitely a 'Pond Whisperer'! (and I loved Billy Jean!)
Thank you, Eric! I was actually starting a waterfall /creek /pond project when I found your videos. I just finished watching the entire series. It's very well done and I found it extremely helpful. I just canceled some online material orders when I learned of better options from your videos! Now, for the same cost, my water feature will be of much higher quality thanks to your most informative videos. I really appreciate that!
Hey Catherine I'm glad to hear we have bee a source of inspiration for you! Yes our location in Yucaipa is a retail center. I would suggest a large holding pool for your fish during the renovation of the pond. We use a 6' round by 3' deep collapsible koi show pool for holding koi during renovations. You will need to fast the koi for a few days before your move them to the holding tank and aerate the pool heavily. Monitor for ammonia spikes daily and change 50% of the water each week.
Just want to say thank you for that. I live in South Africa and we are landscaping a big development with ponds. I learned so much from you. Thanks. Connie
Connie this makes me so happy to hear we have had an influence on your project in South Africa! Thank you for your feedback and when you finish up your project I would love to see some video footage. Stay tuned as we have a busy year planned for filming!
I need to thank you at least 21 times(maybe 100 times as I watched each of your videos at least twice) on your fantastic series. I have been thinking about rebuilding my pond for years but after your videos I felt more confidant that I wasn't screwing up. Most is done now except for some top landscape. That Helix skimmer is great as well as all of your tips. Thank You Again
ThePondDigger Thanks!!! I am the wife, Jeannie...not Mike...I am trying my best to get him convinced! I've wanted one for years upon years! Thanks for the support...I am just about to listen to the videos again as I sew! Its great entertainment for me!
I have a pond in my front garden with koi and goldfish in it I am thinking of doing a new one in my back garden and using the equipment from the front pond, I love your videos and have watched them to get ideas and inspiration you are great at explaining stuff from start to finish. Great work !!!!! Siobhan in Ireland
Yes! Aquatic plantings inside pond liner behind rocks is essential for beautification, naturalization and habitat value! I've always rocked around them in pots, but I like your "burrito"!!!😍🤣👍
We've been mobilized around the country for pond builds, yes. I am traveling to Northern California next month for a project. We currently have our toes in a couple projects in Texas that look like we will mobilize to before the end of the year. We have a project in Orlando that is considering bringing in our team but we may have them covered with one of our Authorized Helix Retailers & Contractors. Wife HATES it when we travel! We have a project that breaks soon in San Diego, 3 week in a motel!
This whole series has been great. Would love to see the pond today after years of settling. Looking forward to more videos. And really pumped about building a pond.
Eric. Dude. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with us. My own, tiny front yard project is ten times better than it was now because of your help. Much appreciated!
YES!!!! I don't like to hear about bad ponds being filled in! I believe all the PONDS GONE WRONG should be brought up to speed with proper construction techniques! I'm so very glad we inspired you to keep the pond!
I live in SW Missouri so ponds like this are very rare. I ran across this series while looking to build a similar but indoor pond for my new shop. I really enjoy your attention to detail and your team. Thanks for putting this video series together. PS I loved the little goat. I don't think that the plant's will survive with him running around ;)
Thanks for answering the couple questions I had along the way and most of all, thanks for providing us the opportunity to follow along with the build. This was just in time for the build I have planned with my son next month.
WOW! The rock delivery issue you have experienced is alarming to me! We are looking at helping a client in Texas to build out their pond for them. If I mobilized my team to Texas and had to wait on rock like you have I would go broke. Keep in mind your pond is quite a bit more complicated (& bigger) than the pond in this video. I'm looking forward to seeing your pond up and running! Keep us posted.
I believe this video series will make history. Im one of many other people who used this very professional and detailed instructional video to build our own pond. You should think about starting a TV channel, something like “this old house” but specialized in pond bulding. Thank you so much.
Thanks for putting this together. Gave me some great ideas. One thing that was missing was connecting the plumbing. I saw the drain off the waterfall but I have no idea why it is needed. Would of sealed the deal to show all the plumbing hook ups being installed. No doubt you guys work your butt off doing these builds. Awesome job!
Well Eric I have to say this is one of the greatest DIY videos I have had the pleasure of watching. I learned so much and see all the mistakes in doing my first pond. I getting ready to redo my existing pond and using all of your ideas and suggestions. I was really pleased on how you explain everything enabling a DIY'r like my self to construct a pond and feel confident in doing so. I applaud you sir!!!!. THANK YOU KEN FROM PA
Ken Wolf Awesome Ken!!! We love to support the Weekend Warriors!!! If you are close to Downingtown, PA stop in to Pickering Feed and Pond Shop. They are one of our Helix Life Support Affiliates! Thank you for watching and thanks for your support! If you stop in be sure to tell them The Pond Digger Sent you!
Thanks for taking the time to post this. I have been a fish hobbyist for many years and have always wanted my own pond. You definitely inspired me to get to work. Thanks for the step by step videos. I will be sure to refer to them often during my process!
Thanks for the series! We have an existing 13 x 9 Koi pond that has been in dire need of a total redo since we bought the house. We are serious DIYers and were considering just filling in the hole but your series has inspired us to get ur done. Thanks!!!!!
I am SO grateful to have found your series - thank you for sharing your knowledge with us. I had a koi pond for several years that was "designed" by the previous home owner, so my brain has been working on the design of my ideal pond for years. Now I am in the process of building my dream pond - we are finally making it happen! You have given me invaluable tips and techniques - and more importantly confidence. My biggest frustration is that I cannot move large rocks by myself, haha! This is a great video series, and I intend to share it on my blog. Many thanks!!
Great series! I wish we could have seen the whole pond, not just the waterfall at the end. The goat was hilarious! Thank you for sharing your extensive knowledge with us!
that was great to watch. Thank you so much for the great advice. my wife and I are inspired and going to build a koi pond. Because of your videos we have a really good grasp on things.
Thanks for all the tips throughout all the videos. My pond that I will build is going to be so much better thanks to your and your teams efforts. People will think that I got professionals to build it for me!
Was looking for a summer project with my boys. This series was amazing in helping us understand how to tackle this project. Very excited to get going, thanks!
Let me know if we can help at any level. If you need an equipment list, rock and gravel materials list or emotional support hit me up! eric@theponddigger.com and follow me on Instagram and Instagram Stoties for daily inspiration
Thank you very much for the wonderful videos, you are a real artist!! One little thing I don't think you mentioned and many newbies don't understand. The volume of the pump dictates how much sound the waterfall makes. Many folks are disappointed (in the long run) by how noisy they are. They are also hesitant to run the larger pumps all day because of the latent thought of how much energy they are using. JMO... think about downsizing the pump or adding a second pump that is lower volume to give an option of which one they want to run. For example, the waterfall you made here with a 500GPH pump or even 320GPH would create a sound you could sit and have a conversation next to.
What a wonderful gift this series is. So well planned, explained, and executed. A+++ for your thoughtfulness and time to make this for us less courageous folks . You answered questions I didn't know I had and your tips about construction and rock composition are very much appreciated. Very, very well done! Grazie!!
Sorry to say we will be dismantling this pond before we have the opportunity to introduce fish!!! We are preparing the set for another up and coming video series! Hope you subbed! We will cover this important topic in another series, I promise!
I really like your video series. Thank you for posting it. I admit I was questioning some of what you were doing, but the end result speaks for it’s self. Great pond and great job. 👍🏻
The pond has been removed because it is a SET for our How To Videos. We are preparing the area for a new Educational & Inspirational Pond Video Presentation. No filming updates will be possible.........Stay tuned for more to come from The Pond Digger Team!
Water lilies do tend to bloom better when in pots in a newer pond. When we plant the lily in the rock and gravel after a few years the lilies are very well established and do extremely well.
I have wanted to build a pond for soooo long, and your videos are so detailed that I feel inspired. Thank you so much, I'm going to start mine very soon!
We do use bottom drains on some installations. Bottom drains aren't for everyone. If you follow The Pond Digger on Facebook we are in the middle of a dedicated koi pond installation complete with bottom drains. We just posted some pictures of the bottom drains. Stay tuned as we plan on filming bottom drain installation techniques with do's and don't, tips and tricks this season! Great question.
The goat not shy to get among the action from the first episodes his was so small now he or she getting big. Beautiful fish pond look excellent thumbs up...
Working on my second pond (first was a plastic 5'x 8') this one is 13 x 10x 3' and your video's have helped greatly inspired what I'm about to finish!!! Sure wish I could find some huge rocks like you have but am in the process of rock hunting now!
Awesome, Eric. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I'll be looking for a Helix waterfall filter very soon. I'm trying to incorporate it into my above ground PT timber pond.
Good Catch Shane. We weighed the rhizome down with some 6" rocks. Somehow that part get edited out. Good Question. Large koi can be devastating on a water lily especially tropicals!
It is a beautiful pond and really loving it, thank you for sharing this to us, really appreciated your quality work and good information. I wish to have one like this in my backyard but I just can't afford to built it nor do the work myself. Thanks again.
Absolutely top series, you made every episode very informative and well worth the time. If you were in the UK I would have been tempted to use you for my project. Many thanks.
Glad you loved the videos! We are dismantling this pond while our producer is on vacation to prepare the Demonstration Set for a new series so we won't be covering this important element of adding fish to the pond. You can be certain we will plan on a video covering this topic in the future. Yes we are for HIRE! This pond would install for approximately $7,500.00
Thank you! We ran into some pressure to complete the project. We did not have time to shoot a video explaining the introduction of fish. It's an important video that we will cover in the future.
Thank you for the feedback! Sorry to say we will be dismantling this pond before we have the opportunity to introduce fish!!! We are preparing the set for another up and coming video series! Hope you subbed!
This demonstration set is all ran off extension cords! We may cover electrical runs in the future on a project where we are installing for a client. The Helix Pond Skimmer is the skimmer we used on this project. Fish Friendly! We use The Helix Skimmer in all of our Turtle Pond Installations! Stay tuned for more instruction pond videos!
You really have me stumped on this one!!!!!! Snakes as predators! YIKES! I'm a Southern California guy with no series snakes to worry about in our ponds. I have heard of water moccasins in pond skimmers!!! RUN TO THE HILLS!!! But seriously I don't have any quality suggestions besides MOVE TO CALIFORNIA. Best of luck to you.
I sat and watched this from beginning to end in 1 sitting. It was great! But I think Billy Jean was the star LOL Must have been a real hoot(nanny) working around her Hahaha
+Russell Beach Yes! I love to hear about the binge watchers! Billy Jean is a hoot and we take her to headquarters Tuesday through Saturday so her fans can come and visit her! People still take selfies with her!
Hi Eric, terrific job, wonderful that you show the how to every step of the way,you know,i really was hoping to see you clear the water and introduce fish into the pond,as all along,we were all watching you construct a "fish" pond, now without a mention of fish or introducing fish into their new home....just saying that this would have completed this set of videos an been nice to see the how to, about that aspect of the fish pond, regardless,it was a very interesting and eye opening as well.
Hey Alora that's a fine question. More often than not we are selling customized pond kits to owners rather than just a kit in a box that we offer in our online store. We would take your pond design, figure out your goals and expectations of the pond and assemble a parts list tailored around your wishes. A Customized Pond Kit just for you is what you should be looking for.
Thank you for the feedback. We will have to meet your requests in another video series as we have already dismantled this pond and prepared the demonstration set for a new series! You are very welcome!
Hi Eric....really brilliant series of videos. You have a great presentation style and a charming way of embedding your experience into your videos.I wish you were working in the UK. Thanks for your great efforts.
Eric, I can't tell you how much I appreciate your videos. They are so informative and have answered so many questions I have about planning my pond. You have such a gentle manner and have encouraged me tremendously! Two questions for you, is there some kind of 'formula' for getting an estimate on how much rock I'll need to order of each type? Also, the black foam...how many canisters do you typically use in a pond of this size? I'm hoping to find it locally but think I might have to order it. Thanks so much for everything!
Thank you for this terrific series! Especially the tips on edge treatment are very helpful. The final result is surely something you guys can be proud of. Take care!
We really dropped the ball when we didn't do a video on introducing fish to the pond, I know this now! There are no fish in the pond because the pond is no longer there! The pond WAS on a demonstration set. We have already removed the pond and have the SET prepared for a new HOW TO videos Series!!! You can rest assured we will be covering the topic of introducing fish to your pond in a future video series. Thanks for the question.
The colors and choice of plants is incredible. The whole pond is awesome. It's sad to think this is the final video. I enjoyed clicking on the next video in the series. I know the retaining wall was to prevent damage to the fence behind, but would you consider adding a couple of lights behind it to shine up on the fence for some accent or mood lighting?
awesome job and videos! something tells me that goat ate up all the plants when you left lol. the only thing I didn't see that I really wanted too was a look at the pond after the water cleared up to see all the shelfing and rocks below how they looked. thanks for the videos though!
FYI we tore out the pond only a couple days after completing the video. It was on our RUclips set for filming demonstration videos. We shot the Frog pond series in that location!. Thanks for watching!
Enjoyed every series.!!... ha couldn't wait for the next to show. Great stuff Eric..!!! This is my second year with my "backyard" pond, and added a small waterfall. Haha, it turned out well, only a couple mistakes. Thanks to your series, I'm ready to go full out next year. You and the crew helped so much.!!
Eric, as always, you have done an awesome job with the pond and the video series. I've learned a lot and am always looking for you next video. funny thing is i started my pond project before you did and you're done before i am. in my defense, i am in an area where rock is not abundant and must be trucked in. I've rocked 90%+ of my pond, set my skims and waterfalls but have been waiting for my final rock delivery for 3 (going on 4) weeks. It is very frustrating.
I had to move my pond this weekend because my neighbors built a very unstabe wall that was in risk of falling into my old one. I am very pleased with the end result and I would like to thank you for inspiring me to design it differently, im in a lot of pain now though lol :-)
I really enjoyed this series. You are actually really good at explaining things in detail. The only think I missed is how to put or connect the water onto the pond.
Quality job, good workers, and first class operation. When you finish it has to be great looking back that how it came out. The frog pond is a lot easier then the fish pond. I will be looking into doing a frog pond in my next house. Moving soon. Thanks for the help. PS---The goat was a trip.
Watched this entire series October 27, 2022. It was great! So much valuable information. At the beginning of the first video, I thought, "Oh this is what I need". After the rock install, my thoughts changed to "Oh this, but much smaller!" What a gorgeous outcome. What can one do with a jagged hillside?
I've been building ponds since the 80's and you are one of the most professional, helpful, creative installers I've ever seen! I love your eye for aesthetics, your attention to detail and job site cleanliness, and the fact that you're willing to give away advice (instead of making it "secret", so no one will "steal" your secrets!). Well done - we watched all 21 in our backyard patio this morning. The kids enjoyed it as well!

My husband and i started building a pond and had no clue what we were doing!!!!! because of your videos our pond came out amazing!!!!!
i just love this guy he is the best pond guy ever!
Be sure to send me a link to the video when you complete the project. Let me know if you need any assistance in the design.
Absolutely breathtaking your a pond genius thanks for the video God Bless
Thanks for the feedback! Glad you enjoyed it as much as we enjoyed making it!
Thanks for watching! I hope one day you will have a pond of your own.
Great series of vids. Currently digging in the front yard and finding your info invaluable. Thanks so much! Regards Peter from OZ.
Hey! Appreciate the videos! Just stumbled across them recently and planning to build my first pond. These were extremely helpful.
Fantastic job really inspiring. Hate to think how much the rocks cost. It sure is a lovely job though so thank you for sharing all your knowledge.
Thank you for watching!
The goat is so cute awwwww.
Another Masterpiece. I've learned a lot watching Your excellent series, thanks, blessings, and respect.
Thanks so much for making this video series! I watched all the videos and I feel much more prepared to start planning my pond.
Wow! glad I watched these. So much more goes into building a pond than I ever would have thought of.
I hear that a lot! When we get down to it theres a lot to do!
Thank you for this terrific series!
Especially the tips on edge treatment are very helpful.
The final result is surely something you guys can be proud of. Take care!
+Petra Johansson Thanks for watching> The edge treatment section was my favorite!
Thank you for this series of videos, I've learned a lot of good tips by watching!
You are very welcome!!!
awesome job and videos! something tells me that goat ate up all the plants when you left lol. the only thing I didn't see that I really wanted too was a look at the pond after the water cleared up to see all the shelfing and rocks below how they looked. thanks for the videos though!
Pond goals! Thanks for the series. It was very inspirational.
Thanks for gluing to the effort of doing this series. Really helpful.
Eric...Inspiring brother..It is amazing to see the transformation...My wife loved the goat....Time to get dirty and add some life to the backyard...
