  • Modern house number sign made to compliment a project I did in the fall. Here I tried out shou sugi ban, a Japanese wood preservation technique that involves burning the wood to create a protective coating. Enjoy and Merry Christmas!

That plate looked beautiful after you were finished. To tell you the truth, I was wondering what you were going to do with those boards you used for the trim, but I knew you would make it look great. 🙂

Next time you are working on something that needs finish on 3 sides, put it on end. Easier to hold. Easier to brush.

Merry Christmas and a healthy and prosperous New Year. Just a comment, not an indictment, but did you give consideration to staining the end grains? And if it was a conscious decision, could you tell me why you didn't. When I was an apprentice, we would stain all four sides of cedar shakes to keep them from cupping over time. I notice that nowadays, no one stains cedar all the way through. Is that because they mills are curing cedar differently/better than 50 years ago when I was a whippersnapper and that process is no longer necessary, or something else. I'm not so old that I can't learn something new. Thanks!

I was taught to stain all sides as well but this board was already cupped, (you can see in the video when I was dry fitting the border) but I felt with that thick border on it it would straighten the cedar back out, which it did, so I’m confident it will hold it straight. Besides, that stain is expensive lol
