This came out of nowhere because I've never seen anyone mention Arrian before. I've treasured my Landmark Arrian for 10+ and just started a reread, I'd recommend it if you're interested in Arrian after this video. The Landmark book adds a lot of maps and contextualization that really helps visualize Alexander's campaigns
Thank you, that was wonderful information, I have always been fascinated by Alexander the Great, but I have never heard of Arrian, I will check out our library downtown and see if they have any of his works.
Great video! Fun fact about Arrian and his influence. According to the fourth century roman orator Themisticus Arrian and Junius Rusticus served together in 135 during Rome's war against the Alani. Rusticus was Marcus Aurelius tutor and introduced him to Epictetus. Rusticus probably got introduced to Epictetus Stoic writings through Arrian.
First off, again I congratulate you on the channel growth! Your posts are ones I await every week. Never heard of Arrian but will be checking on him later after I finish the Classical writers I'm on now.
Erica you are a great storyteller, you know how to keep things entertaining. I have never heard of Arrian before, thank you for educating me. I love learning new things.
It is very pleasant that you are young and engaged and have knowledge about the important personalities of history. It's also good the presentation you've made in your video Continue
Great job! Congrats! It is suspected that Anabasis, Indica and Pontica were written in order to tempt Hadrian to become a new Alexander (and continue the job of Trajan) by conquering these lands that he had just abandoned. Just let me correct you on the last years of Arrian. He spent them in Bithynia, and this is when he became the priest of Demeter and Kore. It is also suspected that he promoted Hadrian's Panhellenism there, see Koulakiotis (2019). ARRIAN THE PRIEST: PROVINCIAL CULTURAL IDENTITY AND ROMAN IMPERIAL POLICY. In Political religions in the Greco-Roman world: Discourses, practices and images. Edited by Dunn C. & Koulakiotis E. Cambridge Scholars Publishing. pp. 87-107.
Arrian is the reason we can appreciate Alexander's campaigns and leadership today. Although he is bias and exaggerates the numbers of the Persians (understandable in that time as Rome and Parthia were in conflict) he still does an excellent job of detailing through every major campaign of Alexander which influences military buffs to this day. That's a remarkable legacy.
The way I see it, Arrian is good for military history of Alexander, Rufus is good for the man behind the myth of Alexander, Diodorus is good for the Grand history of Alexander and Plutarch is good for the "Moralism" of Alexander.
how dare you call me a nerd! While simultaneously getting confused as to why you didn't name Cicero by his full legal name... a great video as usual! I never come away from your videos without feeling inspired to read myth and legend and history!
I would love to know which parts he took from which sources (if we actually know, that is) and how the inherent biases and perspectives of those sources may have shaped his account.
Αρριανός - Arrianos Hadrian the Roman emperor, who met Arrian in Athens, appreciated his virtues and made him prefect of Cappadocia, gave him the rights of a Roman citizen and Arrian acquired the name Lucius Flavius Arrianus.
if you love Alexander the Great, just wait until you see the sequel, The Wars of the Diadochi, after he dies. And then hundreds of years later, the descendent of his general Ptolemy, Cleopatra, and all that she gets up to, in the city named after him, Alexandria. Ancient History is the best thing ever

Thank you so much!
Arrian's writing of Alexander's speech to his men at the Opis Munity had me in tears, and I wanted to apologize!

Very interesting. Always heard about Arrian as a source in documentaries about Alexander but I thougt he was more close in time to Alexander.
good video ❤
Thanks!
"All things Arrian" (me, happy I listened to this in public with earbuds.)
I was so conscious of this when I was filming but there is literally no way around it hahahaha
Αρριανός - Arrianos
Hadrian the Roman emperor, who met Arrian in Athens, appreciated his virtues and made him prefect of Cappadocia, gave him the rights of a Roman citizen and Arrian acquired the name Lucius Flavius Arrianus.
Arrian literally the reason Alexander became so popular and revered in Rome long after his death.
Hey Nerds-hahaha. I am an aggressively happy B.C./A.D fella and I dig this videos' Erica-StayGroovy.
The body language and charisma is off the charts...No offense to my great history teachers, but I'd rather watch/listen to this..
Thank you 🫶🏼✨

what is the deal with the intro? you hold your hands together and look up? does that mean something... is it a reference to some tv show?
READ THE GREEK ALEXANDER ROMANCE
This is very aggressive 😂
I am most interested in Xenophon.
