Damasko: A Look Inside the Manufacture - Part 2: The Movements

  • When founder Konrad Damasko first began making watches in the early ‘90s, he did not set out to produce an in-house movement. His initial focus was to over-engineer all the things around the movement, inspired, in part, by the gradual decay of a watch gifted to him long ago for his confirmation. Konrad wanted watches bearing his name to withstand the test of time, and that desire gave birth to hardened cases and crowns, a patented lubrication system, anti-magnetic shielding, and other case technologies that Damasko has come to be known for today. It wasn’t until 2008 that the team turned their attention to the movement. Initially, Damasko put their energy to producing a handful of specific components - among them the oscillating and winding systems - to optimize performance of pre-existing calibers. But then came Swatch Group’s movement crunch, which set the industry scrambling. Damasko was not immune, and Konrad was faced with a difficult choice.
“We asked ourselves, ‘What should we do? Should we just let the whole project die?’” Konrad recalls.
Damasko didn’t dawdle. While the big players over in Switzerland spent their energies legislating Swatch Group’s decision, the Damasko team set out to make an in-house movement.

The team behind Damasko are nothing but scientists and engineers that truly love making watches

No bad thing. They have significant innovation for the money. Silicon hairsprings, free sprung balances, ceramic bearings & a unique bi-directional winding system. Combine they with their patented case hardening technology & you have a great tool watch for daily wear. Also the smoothness and refinement of the bezels and crowns are impressive.

I’m proud to own the Damasko DA47. Such an incredible piece. Of any one thing (even things other than watches) that I own, my Damasko is the most well made, and I can tell that only the highest level of effort went into its design and engineering. Form follows function perfection.

damn, now I MUST get a Damasko watch. I had a Sinn on the horizon, but looks like Damasko has taken that spot.

Neither would be a mistake but don't let a short marketing clip sway your decision like that. Sinn has an amazing manufacturing process as well and all the ETA movements in their watches are tuned to chronometer levels of accuracy. Not to mention their own anti-magnetic systems, case hardening methods, humidity regulator inside the case, submarine steel on some models etc.

What i love about the brand is they are proud to produce a German watch and with the exception of Swiss movements, everything else is 100% German. That's part of the appeal for me, i don't want a German with a case made in China!!

These seem to be very well crafted and I'm sorry to say I simply don't find their watches attractive. The movements are of course, but I'm just not a fan of their asthetic. Too bad.
