I have a loud gt exhaust on a beetle (choice due to money) but I have ear problems that cannot allow me to continue with it. I have a 1800cc, epc dual carb, and engle 110 cam build. I am looking for a much quieter rig. This video is great. Always a pleasure watching.
What brand? Where do i buy one? I live in the LA area (need a very very quiet muffler for my 69 bay, i hav a 1600 dual carb) my wife says its headache inducing now
Remember my old bug had an aftermarket exhaust, it was made out some really thick wall steel so eventually all the internals of the muffler departed leaving a straight through design. It was loud but never got stopped as it was just considered VWs were that way. Guy I worked with would get ticketed in his car but not me which annoyed him a bit. That all would have been the early/mid eighties.
I like the 36 hp sound with the hollow tips I'm building a 1300 dual port w/100 cam and dual carbs stock exhaust and hollow tips. great video thanks for posting this
I'm running one of those "Quiet packs". Quiet they are not! I modified it to a side-tuck and added a dual outlet with two motorcycle resonator mufflers peeking out from under the guard. It's now quiet enough to appease the neighbor but having the muffler at the side makes adjusting valves a pain.
I had a Monza, you called a 4 outlet muffler, on my 71 Beetle. I hated it! To drop the engine, that exhaust had to come off. I sold the car before I could change it. I wanted to cut it up in pieces!😁
Put a empi sidewinder 1 5/8" exaust on my 62 bug, 1835 duel 44's on the motor I'm just building this car with my son , it's really hard with all the different outlooks on what is right or wrong I guess we shall see great videos
I see your up on bugs, my son just picked up a 57 oval and now he's looking for parts, I'm looking for a popes nose and no one can tell me if the 57 has a different one than the 58 maybe you could help me? I want to help him piece it together, I would appreciate any input. Doug
Great informative video as usual. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience. Normally 4 in exhaust are less restrictive and increase overall bhp by around 10% ?
Hey Mike you have a few different type of pipes there? On the Merger can You weld a 1 3/4 inch reverse turbo on it . You could tuck it under by angling it a little. I have a EMPI pipe on 1600 and it is under the fender and only the chrome pipe sticks out. Maybe I backed up on to a curb. Heck yeah I like a video on overhauling your old ( motor ).
@@Mikefngarage You got the thick wall 92s and a 4140 74mm crank ! It is not blown right, just worn right ! If so a overhaul mite pep it back on the road .
Great video! Landed here looking for some exhaust sounds. Got a ‘67 with a decently built 1968cc has a hide away exhaust but I just blew a hole in the muffler from a backfire. Now I’m looking to either replace with the same or try something new. This was much help!
I like the way your 36 horse sounds on the beetle. I put an abarth on my 59 and love the sound of that. Not sure if there is any power gain. I put it on the car before I got it running.
probably going to be a 85.5 piston with 74 drop in crank. little or no machine work. all done by hand. so you can build a 1700 without machining a case just buy a stroker crank do some hand work on the pistons and case. or buy the i beam rod set and have a 1699.
Well done a great topic to cover. The beetle at 15.00 sounds good. My single cab takes ages to start if its been sitting. After a long start from sitting i always put the battery on charge. Any thoughts on sealed vs unsealed batterys for our cars??
Excellent video Mike. Over the years I've pretty much had all of these exhausts. I agree that the merged twin thunderbird is one of the best off the shelf exhausts. The CSP python is the new kid on the block for all out performance but like custom exhausts is a big ticket item. Will be trying out a vintage speed exhaust on a T4 build soon, I will post how it goes. The struggle I find getting older is a good balance between noise and performance.
yea I really like quiet but it just wasnt going to work. AA performance merged sidewinder actually fits on a bus. Even though it does not spec to do so. Sacrifices no heater boxes. But we have an idea stay tuned.
Hey Mike, I’d love to see another engine build. I really enjoyed this last one. I know you cant try every exhaust known to man, but what are your thoughts on the Empi GT with the larger tips that come out in the stock Bug location? Especially as it would work with your current 2007cc.
Do you think heater boxes makes a difference at all? I just took mine off and put j tubes. I have a single empi quiet pack but never thought about restriction. I forgot what size motor I have. I wanna say 1653 or so. I have the larger slip in pistons. I also have the cb 044 heads and dual epc 34 empi carbs. What jets do you recommend for my carbs? Are the stock ones ok? Is my exhaust ok?
Great vid but I think that you are underselling the extractor system. While the stock muffler is well built it was not ideal for making power and was an obvious choke point. For many of us putting on an extractor was the first mod to be done to a motor because it was easy, effective, and safe. Extractors are also inexpensive.Treat an exhaust system like any other add-on to your motor. By itself, it won't probably add much power to an otherwise stock motor, but it can facilitate good performance if it is one upgraded component out of a few.And yes, build the stroker motor.
on a 1600 they did make more of a difference. on the smaller engines 40 and 36hp not so much. because the torque loss made the drivability worse IMO on the smaller engines.
The 1600 has a lot going for it. It is the largest type 1motor to come stock from VW, which makes it the latest standard as a motor. It is durable, versatile, and has a lot of potential. Parts for them are everywhere and they can prove to be cost-effective. I'm not ripping on the smaller motors here, but most of us VW owners have less to no experience with them. These smaller engines also had less to work with than the 1600, and hopping them up for more performance would be a more difficult proposition.
@@masbeetleboy yea for sure the 36hp engine to get performance out of it you need to spend 5 to 10 thousand dollars to make it run like a just barely hopped up 1600.
I have a 1641 with twin carb with this exhaust. Would a 1.5inch sidewinder be too large or would it be beneficial? Or maybe swap the empi muffler for a more free flowing muffler ?
Great vid mate, thanks for all the info! My partner has a 76 kombi with a stock 2.0L engine and she wants to make it quieter, especially for those long highway drives that seem to cause us to temporarily lose our hearing lol. What would you recommend?
Im not sure what exhaust is on it. make sure the tail pipe goes at least to the edge of the bumper. If it has a down pipe style sidewinder I added a tail pipe to mine and it is much easier on the ears.
never used one on a 1200. stock exhaust works the best so far. the better ones you loose too much torque. gain HP but they dont like RPM so the HP is unusable.
@Mikefngarage I just tried fitting the empi 1200 exhaust on the car (64 bug). It wasn't even close. It looked like it would fit but nothing really lined up with the stock exhaust (was a little wide). I'm taking your advice and getting another stock muffler. Thanks for sharing all of your knowledge!
I have a problem with my exhaust on my '61 Mango Bus. When I got my bus back the exhaust tip ends in front of the rear bumper. Half of the tip is clear and the other half is covered by the rear bumper. The exhaust is blowing in the bumper and turning my bumper black in that spot. It is lowered and I do not know what to do to correct this problem. It's a new motor and bigger than the original. I hate this exhaust. It is so loud I think. It kind of sounds like those exhaust systems kids put on their Honda civics...cans I think they call them.
What bugs me with exhausts... is that I have to pay up for stainless, knowing it is a little more expensive material but we all get taken for a ride by manufacturers triple the cost. My bug is my daily so its a necessary evil. If I was a weekend/Sunday driver the cheap option would be just fine.

would help out with that build. Withe the cam it will be asking for a little larger exhaust but not too big. Full extractor might be turbulent.
thanks
