many traditional styles from around the world use pentatonic scales, maybe that's what you were thinking of. there had been a theory in ethnomusicology that this is caused by basing scales on the overtones created by playing simple wind instruments that exist in p. much every culture, most notably the fifth you get when playing with alot of pressure, but thats been debunked. ("Blasquintentheorie")
You were probably thinking of Indonesian Gamelan music. That is usually in either a 5 note (slendro) or a 7 note (pelog) scale. Each Gamelan Orchestra has its own particular tuning, so you can't mix and match instruments from different ensembles.
Igorrr is lit. Their entire discography is more than worth a listen. "Downgrade Desert" is the first song of their new album and, I think, it is used to serve as an introduction for the whole album essentially. So, I'm assuming it's less over the top than usual so there can some room for the intensity and chaos to escalate.
The individual tracks (except Very Noise) on Spirituality & Distortion is just generally more straightforward than Savage Sinusoid was. That's about it unfortunately :(

Downgrade Desert is the opening track on Spirituality and Distortion and the album is a fantastic one to listen to start to finish. Its songs like Opus Brain and Cheval pull from a wide array of instrumental and genre influences, and are applied in really interesting compositional structures. Individual track composition on Spirituality and Distortion (the album from which Downgrade Desert is taken) is much more straightforward by comparison or returns to ground already broken on Savage Sinusoid , bar perhaps Very Noise - which is all over the place but not really representative of Igorrr. If looking at Igorrr again ( and I strongly suggest you do, they're great :))" I would suggesting checking out Opus Brain or Cheval for something slightly more avant-garde :)!
The track I surprisingly haven't seen mentioned in the top few comments is 'Tout Petit Moineau' - which is the absolute magnum opus track of the magnum opus album of his called 'Hallelujah'. To understand more what Igorrr is about it's helpful to check his catalog in a chronological order. Gautier - the mastermind behind Igorrr also had a more death-metal driven project called 'Whourkr', that had his signature drumchopping, glitched up kind of style and touch. Older stuff of his was also pretty hard to categorize, but was generally was thought of as 'break-core-ish' music hence the eclectic jumping between genres not just between songs but sometimes on a second-to-second basis, later on getting its own genre descriptor of "baroque-core" thrown around more as he progressed/started to use more sounds that reflected his love for baroque music and frequently used instruments used in that era. With all the interesting stuff he has put out before and that type of direction has culminated in his masterpiece album 'Hallelujah', where you have the track that has the legendary chicken scatting bit ('Vegetable Soup') and the insane musical climax of 'Tout Petit Moineau' just to name two very memorable highlights of the album. If I'm remembering correctly he started having Laure Le Prunenec - the female vocalist on board on this album first. Even already with 'Hallelujah' he started going more in the direction of having live instruments recorded by great instrumentalists instead of having stuff done on the machine or played by himself. After that I think that 'Savage sinusoid' was more of an experimentation phase about what he can do sonically, engineering wise and a bit as a composer. I think all he has learned through making Savage Sinusoid was mastered and got more streamlined and lean on 'Spirituality and Distortion' where he got to show himself more as a composer while also incorporating eastern musical vibes that's also kinda giving the album a sort of overarching musical theme. While I think the track called "Lost in Introspection" is a bit of an outlier (along with the very 'Kusturica imagery' inducing closer track called 'Kung Fu Chevre'), it was probably my favorite track of the album that I found myself going back to a lot since.
Sweet! Igorrr (and his group) the man! I discovered them a while back but really fell in love last album. This album, imo, is his best overall. It seems that he’s hit his sounds, kinda like you mentioned BMTH did with their newest song. It’s eclectic, still electronic and experimental, but much more...musical (?). Really enjoy this album. Highly recommend checking it out on your own. I loved the comments about the notes. It reminds me of color. We’re trained to see “red” and “yellow” and “green” but it’s what our society tells us is those colors. We can see the other “yellows” but often don’t distinguish between them because there’s no need to unless you use those many colors like an artist or graphic designer. With music it’s even more interesting is that no matter how “great” of a musician you are in the western world, you usually stick to the 12 notes of the western world even though there’s so many other ones. It sounds “weird” or “abnormal” to our ears but might sound completely normal to someone from another culture. It would be interesting to listen to musicians both from a western and non-western background explore these different notes in their music. I tend to listen to middle eastern folk music every so often because it’s so different- love the rhythms and note choices. Anybody have any other suggestions? Your comment about this sounding more “melodic” really resonated. In a video last week you mentioned a song wasn’t quite melodic enough and didn’t sound as “musical” to you because of that. I watched a video about the decline of melody, even in some pop music (Billie Eilish and some T-Swift) and focus on rhythm. Those same reasons can lead to the pentatonic scale used in ancient China (no the aproximation used in Western culture), and lots of other systems. -We do not measure wavelength in cents. Cents are a subdivision derived directly from our tone/half tone system (tha equal temperament), not the other way around. -1 cent is exactly 1/100 of a half tome or half step.

Like many others have suggested, I think you would really like Cheval. It does have the chaotic mix of elements you're looking for, but it is also all tied together with a melodic thread that goes all trough the song. You're correct that Downgrade Desert is Igorrr at it's most accesible, but ieuD is nowhere close the other end of their discography. If you want a bit more full picture of Igorrr material you should listen to some of their older stuff, for example Tendon, Brutal Swing and Tout Petit Moineau and for newer stuff something like Opus Brain, Himalaya Massive Ritual and Kung-Fu Chevre.

Vegetable Soup (Hallelujah) is one of my favorites. I discovered Igorrr just right before Covid I think and had to wait two years to see them live. But I am so happy I got to see them all because The female vocalist and the male vocalist was kicked out. Really fu%kin stupid of him I think. He blamed it on them being hard to work with. But at the same time I understand it because it was his band from the beginning and then they joined one by one, kind of. I think the album Nostril, Hallelujah and those other two mentioned are great all the way through! It's hard to put this song and ieuD on the spectrum because there are so many variations of styles. Cheval and Hollow Tree is also very good. More Igorrr please!
It's not really the same music as Igorrr but have you checked out Corpo-Mente? It's one of Laure Le Prunenec projects since she left Igorrr. I would probably start with either Ort or Arsalein -- both of which have live session music videos.

In my opinion, this new igorrr album is a bit tame compared to savage sinusoid. still great though, but that one was phenomenal. those new to the band, there are several projects around, whourkr, oxxo xoox, corpo mente, worths checking out. Igorrr is the best though for those who like experimental music in general. go through all his older stuff as well, it will surprise you a couple of times!
I'm not particularly educated on the subject, but do you have any sources to back up your thoughts about Ancient China having 5-6 fundamental notes? I found a page on Wikipedia that states that they possessed a "scale" known as Shi-er-lu, which contains twelve notes all contained within the scope of an octave (apparently their frequencies were based on Pythagorean ratios rather than the equal-tempered ratios we use for our Western scales). I do know, however, that different forms of Gamelan (a traditional Indonesian percussive style of music) typically have 5 or 7 notes, and they're tuned to very peculiar frequencies that interact in a way that sounds extremely "out-of-tune" to our ears. Perhaps that's what you were thinking of? Regardless, very cool stuff, if you've never heard of it.
I think you're right in calling me out here. It's very possible that I misspoke about Ancient China's small number of fundamental notes. I did some quick research and also can't seem to find any data to back me up on that one. It's been several years since I last took a music history course and my memory seems to be getting worse with each passing day 😅. To more 60s 70s acid rock stuff like gum boot soup. 3 good ones are robot stop. Witch is built entirely on rythem. Planet b is a thrasher. Green house heat death is a good example of the intermediate note usage. Also one song from each of my favorite albums.
To be honest, I don't really dig in Igorrr's 2 latest albums. They are very straighforward and metallish (in a bad way). For me Nostril (2010) and Hallelujah (2012) are their best. I hope you'll make a reaction to a song from these albums. To be more specific, tracks: Tout petit moineau, Tendon, Vegetable soup.

Great reaction and commentary! I would love it if you could check out their latest record (Where this song is from). The record is very exciting with many different ideas but each of them surprisingly structured executed, an exprience from start to finish
I know you're not gonna check out this band again soon but I do really recommend you check the back half of this album which feels a lot more like the "classic" igorrr you have heard before. personally I recommend Himalaya massive ritual, Paranoid Bulldozer Italiano, or Kung-Fu Chevre
Sometimes it's good to hear a song more accesible and without harsh vocals all the time xd. I love the variety of groups and styles, and the best it's still to come
Please do a reaction if possible to "Moldy Eye" by Igorrr! I see alot of channels reacting to Igorrr's newer works, especially those with music videos, but I don't see channels digging into the earlier works.

I started doing it because it's the easiest way for most people to know when my videos are posted. Most people, especially those outside of the US, don't know their time zone against U.S. Eastern but most do know their timezone against UTC.

Loved that you reacted to Igorrr, but you should check Cheval, Camel Dancefloor or IeuD. This one is more....mainstream than to what he usually produces.

Vegetable Soup (Hallelujah) is one of my favorites. I discovered Igorrr just right before Covid I think and had to wait two years to see them live. But I am so happy I got to see them all because The female vocalist and the male vocalist was kicked out. Really fu%kin stupid of him I think. He blamed it on them being hard to work with. But at the same time I understand it because it was his band from the beginning and then they joined one by one, kind of.
I think the album Nostril, Hallelujah and those other two mentioned are great all the way through! It's hard to put this song and ieuD on the spectrum because there are so many variations of styles. Cheval and Hollow Tree is also very good.

It's not really the same music as Igorrr but have you checked out Corpo-Mente? It's one of Laure Le Prunenec projects since she left Igorrr. I would probably start with either Ort or Arsalein -- both of which have live session music videos.

I saw that you also watched that chicken sonata from Igorr but it's just isn't as rewarding as the other songs. Do you plan to make any more reaction videos of Igorrr?

@@CriticalReactions I don't know if I mentioned it earlier, but I'm from Sweden and there's a Swedish band that didn't really blow up because they were so early for their style. Very progressive. They are called "Calm" and are anything but. I don't believe there are any videos but the songs are on yt. Check out songs preferrably from the album "Army of a Few" which is my favorite. It's very hard to pick a certain song because they are very different. But maybe you could do the whole album since it's only ca 37 min long. :P

It starts with an oud. Large fretless lute like instrument. Very middle eastern, hence the unusual notes outside of our western scale.
It's actually a Morrocan instrument called a Guembri or Sentir! Took some digging but I can confirm this.

In my opinion, this new igorrr album is a bit tame compared to savage sinusoid. still great though, but that one was phenomenal. those new to the band, there are several projects around, whourkr, oxxo xoox, corpo mente, worths checking out. Igorrr is the best though for those who like experimental music in general. go through all his older stuff as well, it will surprise you a couple of times!

I'm not particularly educated on the subject, but do you have any sources to back up your thoughts about Ancient China having 5-6 fundamental notes? I found a page on Wikipedia that states that they possessed a "scale" known as Shi-er-lu, which contains twelve notes all contained within the scope of an octave (apparently their frequencies were based on Pythagorean ratios rather than the equal-tempered ratios we use for our Western scales).
I do know, however, that different forms of Gamelan (a traditional Indonesian percussive style of music) typically have 5 or 7 notes, and they're tuned to very peculiar frequencies that interact in a way that sounds extremely "out-of-tune" to our ears. Perhaps that's what you were thinking of? Regardless, very cool stuff, if you've never heard of it.
I think you're right in calling me out here. It's very possible that I misspoke about Ancient China's small number of fundamental notes. I did some quick research and also can't seem to find any data to back me up on that one. It's been several years since I last took a music history course and my memory seems to be getting worse with each passing day 😅.

Even if you don't do a reaction, you would be serving yourself to watch some of their live performances, that was when I realized were in the presence of true genius, it's when I really "got it" even though I was already hooked. Also, this album has really fun making of videos that I think anyone would enjoy.

I am not sure if you like country music or not (I don't usually), but I do recommend you react to 1000 Miles From Nowhere by Dwight Yoakam.
I'm not a huge fan of the modern *pop* country but I enjoy a lot of the blues elements found in older country music. I'll add it to the list though.

So there is an acid rock band that plays some of them weird notes you dont typically hear out out of Australia called -king gizzard and the lizard wizard- they have added frets to their guitars. its up to you if you wanna add that to your list. @@paravarium rattlesnake is super repetitive. I dont blame you on that one. Evey album they put out has its own sound from thrash influences like infest the the rats nest. To more 60s 70s acid rock stuff like gum boot soup. 3 good ones are robot stop. Witch is built entirely on rythem. Planet b is a thrasher. Green house heat death is a good example of the intermediate note usage. Also one song from each of my favorite albums.
To be honest, I don't really dig in Igorrr's 2 latest albums. They are very straighforward and metallish (in a bad way).
For me Nostril (2010) and Hallelujah (2012) are their best. I hope you'll make a reaction to a song from these albums. To be more specific, tracks: Tout petit moineau, Tendon, Vegetable soup.
