Ricercar no. 34 'La Compagna'
Originally written for renaissance lute

Francesco Canova da Milano (1497 - 1543) was one of the most important Italian composers of instrumental music of the Renaissance. Born in Monza, near Milan (hence the "da Milano"), he was nicknamed "Il Divino (the divine)", just like one of his contemporaries, the artist Michelangelo.
Although it was written 500 years ago, its music still speaks to us today with its unique atmosphere of serenity and contemplation. His music has a clean, soft texture with counterpoint and imitation, similar to the works of Josquin des Prez.
This piece entitled La Compagna is a ricercar typical of da Milano's writing, beginning with a simple melodic fragment which is successively imitated by different voices. In some ways the ricercare can be seen as a precursor to the baroque fugue.
Very nice! Thank you!
Thank you very much 😊
J'adore.
Merci Genevieve, content que cela vous plaise!
Bravo Antoine. Très belle interprétation !
Merci beaucoup Yvon!
Wonderful...
Thanks! 😀
I never knew Russle Crowe played clasical guitar. Nice
🤣Lol, Russell Crowe is a first for me. Usually, I get Brandon Fraser after he got a bit fat (but not too fat😂!)
Beautiful piece, sounds fantastic!
Thank you very much Gary, the Kim Lissarrague guitar helps a lot!
@@baroquelute you’re welcome my friend. A beautiful instrument indeed , you play it beautifully!
Simplemente magistral. Aplausos...!!!
Compliments !
Bonjour Roger, merci beaucoup!!

Excellent Antoine! Very nice left hand work (it's the first time I realize you're left handed 😲) to create different timbres! Very well.
And you use the p-i technique for faster runs. I have to learn that too, because without nails it's more difficult to play with the standard i-m technique
Hi Stefan! thanks a lot :) Yes, all my instruments are left-handed (including the Stenzel). P-I alternation for scales works well, especially if you have no nails or shorter nails. With long nails the thumb does not produce a nice tone on the e string. Renaissance lutenist can achieve incredible things with P-I alternation and I wanted to try that on this piece. Have a nice day,
Do you have sheet for this?
Hello findus_52, if you type ''la compagna da milano pdf'' in Google, you will find a couple of versions of it. Many transcriptions are with the G string tuned to F# , you then get the same intervals as a Renaissance lute, you can even add a capo to the 2nd or 3rd fret if you want to get even closer to the lute pitch. I play this one with the G string natural though.
