Thermacell Mosquito Repellent Device: Do They Work? - Preparedmind101

- Preparedmind101 takes a look at a great device for the outdoors that I never see mentioned online. Contrary to popular fantasy, we aren't in a survival situation every time we step in the woods. Whether you are simply camping or just practicing skills, this device can make mosquitos go bye-bye without soaking yourself in deet. Not something everyone will feel they need, but something that many will appreciate.

I wish I could "like" this video twice Chris. I'll be ordering one of these tonight. It seems like every time I edit one of my videos I notice one of those little bloodsuckers on my forehead. Apparently everywhere I shoot video is a perfect mosquito habitat. Thanks for showing this! - Bryan
It's perfect for that since you are generally in one spot while shooting. I hang it on my tripod.
I have 2 and they both work great!
I just got mine today (I procrastinated a couple of days), so tomorrow night I'll give them the acid test in the mosquito sanctuary that is my backyard. If they work there they will work anywhere. I'll let you know. - Bryan
I use 2-3 at a time for campfire type settings wind makes it worthless. 4 hours for a mat but 2 is realistic. I cary a portable and a lantern type usually for swampy areas
What an absolute brilliant thing you say "the second you bring the camera in the woods,
everything you do becomes about the camera"
They also have mats with fresh earth scent that makes a great cover scent while keeping the mosquitoes away. I use these when I go straight to the woods after work for a deer hunt. I'm a bow hunter and the deer still walk right under me when i'm in my climber. I have three of these, one in the truck, one in the backpack, and one at the house. I don't go in the woods without one. Great Vid, Thanks.
They actually do make floating robot drone cameras, you should do a review on one of those, lol ;)-
Just a tip that I do, use the new mat to push the old one out. That way you don't need a multi tool.
Hi, I have used this product for over 6 years and it is worth every penny! Most squirrel hunters will tell you that they have donated a lot of blood while hunting! This is an amazing product, that will allow you to enjoy the great outdoors! Stay safe and enjoy life!
Have you tried using the USB version of this device ? They are pretty cheap and use the same principle of heating a pad to vaporize the active ingredient into the air.
No liquid fuel just 1.5a from your mobile charger. I'm curious what temperature the thermacell heats the pad. USB ones are marked for around 220F and I've measure 190F
Also have you tried third party pads? I've seen vids where people recommend ars mat? And also Raid as cheap alternatives. I've even read reviews on permethrin where people say they put a couple drops on used pads and swear they function well. They buy the high concentration liquid and dilute it and put blue coloring.
So it is pretty much the same thing that there is for use at home that you plug into a wall socket but portable and running on butane not on electricity. Cool stuff
Congratulations on reaching 50,000 subs Chris. You're make great videos, I like your honest no b.s. reviews and seems like a lot of other people do too. Congrats again and next stop 100k, woo woo.
I've been following u for a couple years and I never saw this video. I just started looking at these and I was so happy to see your video when I search
Technically there are drones with follow features now that are basically a floating robot camera like you described. I think DJI makes them. That being said, they're not as good on battery life as you would need for one of them to follow you around all weekend until you're ready to film lol. So your point is still valid..
funny you said floating cameras that follow you, because well, they have them now! :D haha great videos man
Adrian Rivas i was gonna comment the same thing #drone
Only took 3 years but ya.. www.droneguru.net/8-best-drones-that-follow-you-follow-drones/
The used Mat will easily slide out when the new one is pushed in......really no need for the multi-tool. Good video!
you: if only we had floating robot cameras..
the gubment: good idea
hey, Chris... they make floating robot cameras. they sell them at any electronic store.
Thanks Chris for the review.Problem is needing batteries, fuel cells and cartridges. Just easier and makes more sense to get OFF etc. Cost less too.
And lasts all day with one application, granted chemicals on skin is bad but no different then inhaling the smokey chemical fumes from those.
Life hack... If you set up camp. Take a beercan and open it all up on the top. Make some holes on the sides. Put a tealight inside and put the repellant on the bottom. It will work the same.
Same comment as Donald. Thanks for the review.
Bass fishing at night, ThermaCell was a god send. Been using mine for 3 years and love it. The patio version also works great.
Zkhdufh
They work great in the Maine North Woods too. When I change pads, I just push the used pad out with the new one, try it.
Correction. The butane cartridges last for 12 hours the pads last for 4 hours
This looks great, I just wish the butane lasted longer.
you can diy build one with a zippo hand warmer and one of those universal repellent mats.
or an usb mat diffuser with a power bank.
I don't have one but my brother has been using one all Spring and Summer......he swears by it.
I've had one for the past 3 years it works great during early fall hunts when the mosquitos are bad and would be unable to sit still while bowhunting.
+Ted DuPrey I just bought one and am considering using it to bear and bow hunt, I am very curious as to the scent it puts out? Bears have astronomically good sense of smell so I have a few concerns definitely. How do wildlife act in your general area? Do they seem to notice?
+Rob Hurd I have had deer within 5 yards of me down wind without any issues...they have a fall scent and original have never had any issues with either...
Ted DuPrey
Okay awesome, I'm not gonna lie when I say I was a little hesitant and more than willing to deal with mosquito's if it meant keeping things the way they are. I will try it out this bow season as well as bear and see how it goes. From the sounds of it I should be okay. Thanks for filling me in on that essential bit of info.
You have it backwards.. the cartridge lasts 12 hours and a pad lasts 4. Thus why you get 3 pads to every butane cartridge.
So true about "becomes all about the shot" I appreciate you cutting into your own experiences to educate me.
Also deer either don't smell it or they arnt bothered or scared by it.i use thermocells when hunting in Florida (lots of bugs of all kinds and only thing that works well that doesn't scare off your game).
I love them! Used near lake Potoka in the spring, summer and fall...
You got it mixed up the mats are good for 4 hours ant the butane I good for 12 hr.
Why use a multi tool to take out the old pad? You could have pushed the new one from one side in while taking out the old one from the other side.
I'm from Louisiana and believe me we know Mosquitos. Thermacell is a life saver. However I find that they really only work well if your sitting still or moving very slowly.
Same here. Live in Mobile, and tried the thermacell. I think we have a different breed of monster mosquito down here in the swampy south.
I believe you got it backwards Chris. Butane good for 11-12 hrs. Pads only 3-4 hrs. Just read box in Wally. Thx for review. Been wanting one of these.
What is it burning to create the zone and is it safe inside a tent.
After 5 minutes or so... mosquitos were landing on the themacell unit itself. Yes, my thermacell was on and smoking away... no wind.
They work great I take mine hunting in the swamp land that is eastern NC. Keeps them Skeeter's away.
Wonder if they work for other kinds of creepy crawlers and flying pests too?
How the heck do you change the batteries? Or does it even need batteries?
Gteat video. Well presented.
Charles
I use the new blue pad to push out the old one instead of using a tool.
Does it make any noise, do you think the smell would off put deer when hunting?
Normal replant will also dissolve the plastics on your expensive gear. True story.
Thanks for doing a review on it I was just looking at one and now I am going to get one
Repel lemon Eucalytus works 4.97 on Amazon.
Just skeeters and flies? Does it work while on the move? How about those damn chiggers and ticks? Unfortunately, DEET is the only thing that works well for most anything... I hate it too.
Would this work on the freaking huge mosquitos we have here in Alaska?
George Sookiayak I’ve been to Alaska and you can’t kill the damn things you slap them and they just fly off like nothing happened
Im 20 and I have been using my thermacell for years!! It has probably been the my best investment! (well aside from a good knife!)
I purchased a Thermacell and it doesn't work well at all, first off it takes 5 minutes for it to warm up enough to even give off anything from the scent pad and 7-8 minutes to work to its fullest and that didn't keep the mosquitos away (sat with it for over an hour more than once and had gotten eaten alive) and that was on my deck with a few shrubs around it, it was no more than arms reach in any direction from me and at one point I even put it directly under my chair to see what would happen? there was a very mild cross wind and if that's even to much to keep it from working what's the point of having one, not to mention how expensive it gets buying the scent pads and butane....trust me you can burn through a butane cartridge and all 3 scent pads in a weekend ! .... cant imagine how poorly it would actually work in a wooded environment ? I bought the darn thing in the first place because of all the great reviews????? I really don't get it. save your self the money and buy a few citronella candles !
Maybe you got some bad pads? mine works fine deep in the woods.
Frank ! Ive had the same experience with mine. Did not keep them away no matter where i put it. There was barely any wind at all.
Use a new pad to push the used one out. No need for a tool. We use therma cell religiously during hunting season in the South. They absolutely work.
@PM: Relating to the hover-cameras, you may want to look into getting a go-pro, they are small enough to attach to a headband / hat / jacket. Eh, just a thought ...
Thank you for this, def helped me!
Do these keep away only mosquitos? Here in Newfoundland we have these tiny little black flies (I don't know what they're called) and they're evil. They bite but they're stupid as Well, swarming you and flying up your nose and into your eyes and stuff...i want to keep those away from me.
One other question, are the butane cartridges refillable? like those little butane torches?
Great video though man. I love the outdoors. Just did an overnighter on the east coast trail yesterday
Kevin Vokey it sounds like you are describing a gnat. And after reading some reviews, it should work for them as well
I have 2 and the both work great!
What about the wind?
solo shot is out now for ur camera...
Cost more to use than the cost of bug spray ,but it works!
Your not the first that ive seen rave about the thermocell..its not real bad here in pennsylvania,,, but bad enough, thanks for the video ,, I WILL go get one this next season for myself while treking. Not many mosq's on the app trail in november. Ill make sure I have one for next summer...also they should be a smaller product by then ,,,they are kinda large.
I have had one for three years! And I love it! I use my hunting and just used it last night at the drive in! No not in the car we sat outside. Lol
Very cool, looking at hammocks at the moment so something like this may also be needed. Thanks Chris :)
I just got one of these for my Birthday yesterday. Baby Blue of course ;)
This will be great if we get another ice storm, that knocks the power out for 5 days.
This device would be very handy. Too bad you just posted this video, since I'm already going camping tomorrow and only have the bug repellent candles. I would've bought this. Prob will for the next trip.
until they invent floating robot cameras.......
well brother, have I got news for you! Check out the Hexo+ . It is an drone mounted camera with a tracking system similar to soloshot.
There are ways to refill the butane bottles but it is hard
Does it work for black flies or another device thats works like this one for black flies?
will it also keep ticks or fleas away ?
marion, ohio, i too am from that general area
The mats actually last like 4 hours and the butane last 12 hours.
The Pad Will Turn White
And It Will Show You In The Back
they DO have a flying cam that will follow you now!
Well I went out and bought new pads and to my surprise the Thermacell worked perfectly even in deep woods were the mosquitos are the heaviest. I was in the woods for an hour and a half and it worked great and then I went into an area were I knew the mosquitos were going to be intolerable and for another 30 minutes not a single bite! It wasn't just a bad pad but a whole lot of 3 of them....none of the 3 worked? if I do get a bad one down the road do I throw out all 3 and buy new ones, who wants to get eaten alive finding out? I might try making my own pads using one of the many videos showing how to do it, then I wouldn't have to worry about it !!!
I use this during early season see hunts. Works great!
Hey, what sort of paracord bracelet did you have in the video?
are you wearing eyeliner ?
Yes & pantyhose
Would not a Drone with a camera be a robot that followed you around?
conclusion?
Wow 4 hr isn’t long compared to 12 hr sprays
Hey Chris. Great vid but I have 1 Question. How long do the mats and cartridges last. In the woods you said cartridge was 4 hrs and mats were 12 but at the car you said mat was 4 and cartridge was 12 hrs ????
Mat= 4hrs. Butane= 12hrs
nice. thanks
Hi Chris. just ordered me a Pest Off through your amazon store. thanks i will let you know how it goes. i hope this thing works... does it work in hot sweaty situation? I sweat a lot as we all do in the woods, carrying backpacks and etc... thanks again. Randy
i got one of this, did you take this in the air planet i heard there is restriction with this
uh, they do have floating robot cameras brosephine.
In US you don't have mosquito repellent slow burning spirals???? They are for outdoor use only, they last for 8 hours, they are made from pyrethrins,1,5 euro for 10 spirals and extremely effective.
Aren't those the ones that stink to high heaven?
yea that's the ones although the ones with natural pyrethrins stink less
andflou I believe they are not as effective because the active ingredient is less. I saw a video by econo something where he compares the stick version of the mosquito coils(same ingredient ) and it performed horribly versus the thermacell
Yes they sell the mosquito coils in the us! You can find them at dollar tree or dollar general and wally world! They work fairly good!
Thank you, This is good
What's the radius on this thing?
you want a camera that follows you around and floats? Check out the airdog ;).
that wont work here, the copter cant navigate and adjust for trees and obsticles in it's way
those floating robot cameras are called drones I think lol my smart ass comment of the day
Are u using eye liner?
will this get the cicadas out of my yard?
How do u change the batteries ,that run it ?
Does it need battery?
Instead of using your multi tool to take out the old pad (cause is hot)... why don't you jus push te old one with the new one... o.O
GOOD JOB!!!
Chris, is there a way to refill the butane tanks, instead of buying all new tanks?
Look on RUclips
irishedawg yes. It's pretty simple mod
i wonder if deer can smell this?
they have made flying cameras... they're called drones (a little joke but not really)
Unfortunately, it works by killing everything nearby, including bees. 😢🐝 I really wish there were something like that is a true repellent and not a pesticide
There is a flying self following drone with a camera :)
Tabard works!
if it's a liiiiiiitlle windy what ?
What found that really works for mosquitoes. Noxzema! Yes years ago was using Noxzema for a few days for a bad sunburn and I went to my sons baseball game and to my surprise everybody was being eaten alive by mosquitoes an not one landed on me. Been using it ever since. one tip use it for a couple of days prior to going into the mosquitoes.
Got the numbers backwards. 12 hours on the butane, 4 on the mats. Hmmmm that's why you get 3 mats per butane refill. Derrrrrr Math... Hard...If you used it more than once in the two years you have had it, you would know that.
