  • Of all the beautiful lakes on Vancouver Island, one of the most spectacular is Buttle Lake - named after gold hunter….I mean expedition leader Corporal John Buttle. Kept secret are the multiple falls flowing into the lake however today we are gonna bring you an idea of something to do of a wet afternoon on northern Vancouver Island
Accessible via boat, or like us via the more traditional four wheeled vehicle, Myra Falls is spectacular, a mixture of basalt & limestone rocks alternating with turquoise pools (probably has something to do with why it has had a mine operating here since 1966) these pools helped create an almost 200ft tall series of waterfalls.
The hike to see these majestic falls is relatively easy & well laid out, at 1.5km in length it didn’t take us very long to master the views and with the extra energy & time began to explore the shore below…Back in 1955 a dam on the Upper Campbell was built & due to water level increases, some 1500 acres of forest were “harvested” and some were not fully cleared …so during low water levels there’s an eerie side to the origins of this lake with a “tree graveyard” to explore & in turn be rewarded with a nice vantage point of the Myra Falls.
