    AWESOME VIDEO!! I love when RUclipsrs I follow go and explore where I grew up! The firewood thing is a more common thing around BC. All provincial parks have firewood for sale and it's very rare that they won't have any. Also, because of all the fire restrictions during the summer, some people bring propane fires instead.

It was a great place to raise my kids and they all stayed. I also have 17 grandchildren here that have all started their careers here. Hope you get up to Mount Washington next time you are here. Loved the video on Campbell River! I was able to explore along with you as I was born and raised on the island (live in Nanaimo) but haven’t seen a few of those places yet even though we are in the area every couple of weeks. The ferry that you saw in Campbell River goes to Quadra Island which is a 10 minute sailing. If you ever get a chance to go over there it is worth it! We have vacation property on the northern part of the island in Granite Bay which is pretty remote. If you do get a chance to visit Quadra island, I highly recommend Rebecca Spit as it is stunning with gorgeous views and there are so many beautiful hiking trails over there. Happy travels!

    As soon as July/August comes around, we get hit with campfire bans in most places on the island (and BC). So, selling firewood is not a very lucrative business! If campfires are still legal, we all just buy wood from the campground, so you did what the Vancouver Islanders do :)

    Just a suggestion for starting a campfire when the wood is damp…..pick up a self-lighting propane torch and a small bottle of propane, or two, from Canadian Tire or just about any hardware store. It helps to split the damp logs into smaller pieces or use dry kindling, then blast it with the flame. This method has worked for me many times.

    Oh Katherine, I'm afraid salmon is one of the only fresh foods you can get in Alaska! (The other is berries). Hope you like pizza and burgers, because they've got those aplenty up there. It's not a foodie destination but the scenery more than makes up for it. Love the series, guys!

    I’ve camped many times in Canada and they always have piles of firewood at each campground. That’s the way it used to be in the US. You do need an ax however as have not ever seen it broken down enough to start a fires with.

    • @AdventuresofAplusK
      @AdventuresofAplusK  2 года назад

      Yes they had a lot at our campground, but it was soaked. An ax would have come in handy big time. I think I could've made it work if I could have chopped it up into smaller pieces. Thanks!

    The two best hikes in Strathcona park have gotta be Flower Ridge and Marble Meadows. Flower Ridge can be either a strenuous day hike to the first summit, or a casual 2 night trip, giving you all of day two to wander to the end of the ridge (incredible view back there) and back to camp. Water can be a problem on the ridge, but the snow pack can last well into July sometimes. In August, you'll be filtering bath-warm water from scummy, buggy ponds if they haven't dried up already. Early along the trail (45 minutes to 1 hour in), there's a groundwater spring to re-fill your bottles. That's the last water you'll see until you hit the alpine, so be sure to fill up enough. If you run into snow covering the trail in the sub-alpine, be sure to stop and look behind you regularly to familiarize yourself with the terrain. On the return home, it's easy to accidentally start descending into the Henshaw Creek valley if you can't see the trail, and are not cautious. Stick to the height of the land, and you'll be fine.
    Marble Meadows is another fantastic hike that involves paddling across Buttle Lake to the trailhead. There's a small campground at the trailhead, and I recommend you use it, just for the sake of not having to rush things. I've only done this hike once in mid-July, and it was a ridiculous snow-pack year (the lakes were still covered; I couldn't believe it), so there was plenty of water run-off along the trail, but I can't comment on water availability during dry conditions. Up on the plateau, there are a number of little lakes, so water is never an issue. If you have the energy to make it to Wheaton Lake on day #1, then do so. If you luck-out, you can spend a night in Wheaton Hut, and somewhere near there is a potty. Make Morrison Spire your day-hike destination for the following day. If the ground is bare, inspect the limestone belts for 300 million year old sea-life fossils along the way (there are plenty, but I wouldn't know because of the snow 😮‍💨). The view of the Golden Hinde from the summit of Morrison Spire is second to none. The summit of the Golden Hinde has 1700 meters of prominence over the valley below. On the return home, it would be wise to plan for an extra night at the trailhead camp, just in case. The wind on the lake really picks up in the afternoon, and the chop can get really nasty.
    *Grab a copy of Hiking Trails III,* and study the routes you wish to travel before venturing out. Neither of the routes I mentioned here are recommended for novices (as most routes in Strathcona aren't), so be sure to familiarize yourself first.

    What a beautiful area! You said you were there on a holiday. Canadian holiday or american? Figured it was probably Memorial day and don't think the Canadian's celebrate that, but.......you're not far from American soil, so maybe the American's would go up there to camp? Anyway, another great video! It's definitely on our radar the next time we're up there!

    This was a beautiful vlog in every sense of the word! Vancouver island looks amazing! I like the way you're ok to get food from two different places when not in the mood for the same thing. Helen and I have done that already. Adam your fish and chips looked so good! Katherine's pizza looked really good as well minus the pineapple. Sorry I have to differ with you on that...Pineapple doesn't belong on pizza. 🍕 We'll see if that gets my comment a dislike. 😂 Always fun to see Kona having a good time... You guys are truly brilliant at researching your adventures, capturing them and telling beautiful stories! You will forever hold a special place in my heart.

      I am so excited to fish! I don't know if I'll go for salmon as I don't think I have the right rod for it and you have to buy another stamp to legally fish for it, but I'm hopeful to catch lots of other fish! I'll definitely be eating some salmon though! 😋

    Oh my word, the coffee shop seating area on the edge of the water was just stunning! Trying to work out a timeline, what with the snow on the mountains, but you said it's a holiday weekend so I want to guess it's the May Two-Four? I've had salmon shallow fried but never deep fat fried / breaded/battered, but after watching this video, I want to try it pretty badly! Red snapper over here is a pretty expensive so I can't imagine that ever coming from a fish and chip take-away. The Loveland Bay campsite was ridiculously beautiful, it felt like what brochures that persuade you to camp show 😍 So interesting to hear that in the US you can pick up firewood from grocery stores. We have a log burner in our living room and go to a garden centre to buy it in bulk as it's cheaper, but otherwise gas stations are good for all fuels including charcoal for BBQ's, firewood, kindling etc. I always love your videos, but I'm especially loving these ones in Canada!

    • @AdventuresofAplusK
      @AdventuresofAplusK  2 года назад

      The view from the coffee shop is pretty hard to beat! We were the weekend of the 21st of May.
      The fried salmon was super good! The red snapper too! I've been loving all the fish and chips lately.
      The campground was one of the nicest we've ever stayed at. We really wish we could've spent a few chill days there just kayaking and enjoying the campground.
      Firewood in the US is pretty easy to come by, but we had a tough time finding it in Campbell River. The campground had it, but it was just so dang wet.
      We are loving Canada too so we're glad that's coming through in the videos!
