Master Therion was going to fly to Boston a few months ago, at the security check they swabbed me and put it in the machine and it sounded an alarm for some type of explosive, i got surrounded by 6 officers and got really scared, thought they were gonna tackle me, but of course it turned out the explosives detector was false triggering, but they still made me take off my shirt and lower my pants for a personal search, without even going to a closed off room, they did that checkup in front of everyone, a real fkkn theater
An airport was once concerned about my heat pack (I have migraines and air pressure changes are a trigger for them; the heat pack can help tone one down when I feel it coming and lessen my need for medication). Apparently, this is a common thing they double check on because she recognized it for what it was immediately upon sight and poke. :)
A lot of commenters here seem to misunderstand security in general and airport security in particular. So many people claiming its "theater" and something similar saying it hasn't stopped terrorists from entering said country. Thats not what it is it for. It is to stop terrorists from committing terroristic acts on a plane. People claim they don't work but then I will ask when is the last time a terror attack happened on a plane? keep in mind that many of these security measures came after 9/11/2001. Also we have a good idea what these machines do and the rules at the airport. If we wanted to do something bad we just look for a loophole in the system. Thats what the 9/11 hijackers did taking on box cutter which were permitted at the time. If a terrorist wants to enter the country to do a terror attack in said country they will travel to that country carrying next to nothing and so security won't catch anything and acquire needed materials in that country to make a bomb, shot up the place, steal a truck etc. A terrorist isnt going to carry a bomb from the middle east to use in the US they will make the bomb in the US.
Are the back scatter scans banned in some countries due to fears over radiation? If so, it's yet another example of the general public/legislators being really stupid about radiation.
No. Here in germany for example it's due to privacy reasons. Those scanners basically create a nude image of the person scanned and that's just not something people want. Especially parents don't want some security officer to have pseudo-naked images of their children.
Here's a crazy idea, how about just choosing to getting patted down by hand instead? It's no more perverted then seeing a doctor and it's for every bodies safety, machines like that are just for lack of a better word, to flaunt how "advance" and much money you want to waste.
It's all a disgusting invasion of privacy. How about we stop with the fucking paranoia already? It's all a tool to keep people in line, you instill fear in them and tell them they are constantly in danger and everyone out there is out to get them and that's how you get them to give up their most sacred rights!
Yes. C.F. Gauss... Carl Friedrich Guass... the Mathematician from 1800's... Why is it that every troll is using a niche scientist name... its like you're legit taunting how oblivious the majority of people are and making them mad, whilst showing that you have a level of education that implies you do not hold the actual believes you portray... that's impressively cruel....
Backscatter X-Ray machines were taken out of use several years ago as cancer clusters among TSA agents started appearing in airports that used them (such as Boston's Logan).
Etd allows with a fabric which is passed over the areas which are most likely to be in contact with explosive materials is then brought into the machine with a gas which will detect if there are traces of explosive materials
I'm a gunsmith and reloader as a hobby and my tools are in my room so on average 1/5 flights given I have handled loose powder they stop me (the longest time between handling powder and being stoped is 3days)

@@transsylvanian9100 indeed friend. Some people like to LIVE. Which is kind of hard to do if your plain crashes. Besides if you don't want to be checked by tsa you can always take a buss or a boat to your destination.
Of course you'll do what anyone tells you to. You're a woman without a brain who doesn't mind strangers rummaging through your posessions simply because they wear a badge.
I was held back at one airport because I had a few bottles (each one of 40 cl) of wine I think because they saw suspicious density. Thank you for the excellent explanation! :)
MrRoboskippy They failed the Security Undercover tests conducted by the Red Team from Homeland Security, they still caught over 4000 guns at their airport last year, and the TSA do find explosives from time to time as well.*
In the US, from what I have seen, you can request to go through the Millimeter wave scanner, but if you don't you will go through a metal detector. People with implants (Knees, back, etc.) usually do the scanner
I once forgot my filled water bottle when i went through airport security, the woman was like "This is illegal, drink it now or get a fine." I was like chug chug chug
It's so strange having to wait so long in TSA lines- in almost all of Europe and South Africa, where i'm from, all the exact same procedures are carried out but i've never waited longer than 15 minutes
this is fun because i used to work for a EST company. more of a charge vs volume thing than a charge vs mass, but darn close (Mass spectroscopy operates under a vacuum which makes charge vs mass very easy, but the machines in airports dont because vacuums are very expensive, bulky, and loud, so they use charge v volume)
GeneraL_LOL In America - bag scanner, metal detector ( or apparently some places have the 2 things he described), and then pat down if they deem you suspicious.
This applies for American airport security. I don't know why, but British airport security is highly efficient. I've only ever had to wait for 1-2 minutes in airport security.
It really really depends on the airport. Here in America I've been through airports where I've waited about an hour and others I've been done in under a minute. It doesn't seem to be all based on population either. I don't know what causes it
TSA was a horrible experience. I went on a plane for the first time recently on a trip with some of the kids with my school. The TSA workers didn't even pull us aside as a separate group to help a group of 12-year-olds get through without setting on the scanner. I felt terrible and really anxious because nobody told us what we had to set aside and where to walk through. There weren't even instructions. It was even worse because my mom had me pack 6 granola bars, and they were loose in my bag >:[ Also, trust me. TSA isn't all theater. Airports wouldn't spend money buying scanners and paying officers just for the sake of show. If they wanted it all to be a show, they would use simple metal detectors and hire fake guards to pull aside "offenders."
I have a friend who works in Airport security, and everytime they were tested, that means someone tries to get through security with a fake bomb, they miss it.
i don't know about other places, but the most strictest airport security I've ever been to are Changi & Soekarno-hatta. they will not give you smiley face or welcoming you. but I don't take it personally. sometimes they just doing good on their jobs.
I don't have any of this bullshit in my country. Put your carry-on on the conveyor, step through the gate and you're done. All of these extra precautions the Americans take have been shown to be largely ineffective, widely called "security theatre". It doesn't actually make you any safer, but it makes you _feel_ safer, and at the end of the day, that's all that matters to them. Feelings, not facts.
Once I was going on a flight that was leaving at like 7am so we were in the line at like 6 and woke up at 5. I was like 11 years old, and they stopped us to look through my bag. I was SHAKING and didn’t know what was wrong. I thought maybe the machine had misread some bits of chocolate from my chocolate frog box or something. It turned out to be a false alarm or something, and I got all panicky for no reason. I like the nice TSA people, although you can’t blame them if they aren’t the nicest at 6am.
This is a crap ton of checks. Have they actually caught anyone by this? (I haven't traveled by airport since 2000, and any other time I traveled by air I was flying a plane, or someone else was flying the private plane. Oh guess how much security I have to deal with when flying on a private plane :P)
***** Nice to see you here too. I like watching their videos. I'm seriously wondering how many times this actually stopped a bad person from getting on a plane. Like it seems like it's just a waste of money
It would have been useful if you discussed what happens when people with implanted devices which may be effected by radiation and magnetic field walk through. This includes people with pacemakers and neuromodulation units as it would provide people with them a better understanding of how it may affect their device.
The TSA is horrible at detecting anything bad. When I was 5 I was traveling to Las Vegas with my mom. She bought gingerbread before we got to the hotel and when we got to the room she said " let me cut you a piece" and pulled the biggest knife I've ever seen out of her carry-on bag. When I asked her how the hell she was able to bring that she simply shrugged and told me " I just put it in my bag". She managed to take a ginormous knife onto the plane without security noticing. What where they thinking? " Oh hey this looks like a huge knife! Meh, I'm sure it's fiiiine..."
It happend to me last week. After i went through the metal detector, an airport officer took me apart for an ETD analysis. Very weird when you don't expect it.
I once had to go into like, a full ircle thingy randomly. I had an operation when I was little, so that might have been to do with it. My sister also once had a random check at the airport, and when asked where her mum was (She was going home at a different time to us) my sister said our mum was still in the country. Then security pointed to me and asked if I was her mum. I WAS 12 AT THE TIME. My dad is also over 2 decades older than me. So, you know.
I thought you guys were gonna talking about how research as shown useless this measures are and are only in place as "theater security", as in... they are a big show so the passengers feel they are secure, while actually doing nothing to improve security in reality.
coveringend I did it, a lot of times, I don't wanna get in details since this is my personal account but I got things in a plane that you shouldn't be allowed to carry.
Theater security is not about acting. It is about controlling access and providing security over a large area. That said, the TSA is particularly bad at thier jobs. I work theater security for the federal government in a completely different venue and, if we were that bad, the entire program would be reworked. Granted, we also get paid more that TSA line officers so that may be part of it.
You don't need to look for the outline of a gun. Nothing looks like a gun on an xray machine, except a gun. They stand out like you wouldn't believe :-) When I worked at GE in Spokane, I found one (in a priest's briefcase). If the gun is lined up so you can't see its shape, you still can't see through IT so you have to open the bag to see what that big, black rectangle thing is that you can't see through. And to see what was under it, in case it's just a block of steel or something.
@@angelinaramirez6972 Thats correct, body scanner at hearhrow and eu aitport use radio waves so they are not harmful. They will pick up any object hidden behind clothing layer. It would not penetrate through body layer but clo5hing layer only

after having my hands swabbed for explosives once, it came up positive and the only thing i said to the tsa guy was "damn Purell wasn't good enough." and had to sit outside of that line for another hour and a half before being tested again and the test came back negative.
EyeHeartThePanda At first I thought you meant that you were a magician. I was imagining you saying to a TSA agent "Is this your card?" to the oohs and ahhs and applause of your fellow passengers. Also if they cavity searched you you could do that endless scarf thing.
Payitnov Yeah, my deck was in a case too and she was like "is this dangerous? Will it explode?" then after I explained it was a card game she was interested in understanding how it was played lol her coworker had to tell her to let me pass XD
They aren't always flat on the bottom. There are many types of clouds that do not have flat bottoms. The common cumulus cloud is flat on the bottom because it is formed by rising air (thermals). As the air rises it expands and cools, when it cools past a certain point the moisture in the air condenses and becomes visible. That point is called the cloud base. You'll notice that al the clouds will have the same cloud base on a given day. The higher the cloud base the drier the air will be. Sometimes the bottoms of those clouds will be concave, that happens when then thermal feeding the cloud is very strong.
So why do they all have the same cloud base, though? That's just the line where there's enough moisture for clouds to form, and it's drier below there?
No, it mostly has to do with temperature. As altitude increases, temperature decreases. When the rising air cools down to the dew point then you see the moisture in the rising air mass. The "line" marks where the temperature is cool enough for the moisture in the cloud to begin condensing.
The altitude of cloud base depends upon the humidity, temperature and atmospheric pressure. Drier air will have high cloud bases - such as in the desert, and humid air will have low cloud bases - such as in the tropics.
If somebody has a pacemaker or hip replacement, they'll probably receive a pat-down search rather than a metal detector scan. Also most airports are moving to mm wave machines, which won't interact with metal implants.
I have a pacemaker holding a pass/card that proves it. Generally they give me the choice to either get checked manually or to go through the millimetre wave scanner. Depending on the crowdness I just let myself get checked manually as they give me priority over the people in front ahahah.
I always assumed they were drug testing LOL. One time I took my Cards against humanity set in my bag, and they swabbed the box and individual cards - the lady clumsily dumped half the box on the ground and refused my help, so it took awhile. So dumb if they were just checking for explosives. Security has been an expensive, time-consuming joke since 9/11.
I've been wondering what kind of instrument they put the swabs into. I even asked the TSA guys last time I flew, but they had no idea. Thanks for making this video.
ALM I'm also light skinned brown. I have only once been pulled aside (I can toss that up to chance), but my dad who is darker skinned Indian, gets pulled a little more often than just chance (5 times that I remember and he has traveled many more times without me)
When i was younger my family went to Hawai'i and my mom is so paranoid about radiation so she had us get pat down instead of doing the x-ray scan.... i hated it

New Zealand is so chill with airport security. They still only have metal detectors and bag scanners. We don't remove our shoes either. That's weird...
So, if I have a firearm declared in my checked bag (yes, it is absolutely legal to fly with a firearm in CHECKED baggage; check with your airline to see how they want you to handle it) odds are that I handled that firearm shortly before I put it into my bag - meaning there will be traces of gunpowder on my hands. I wonder how that would go down if I was, "randomly selected" for the, "enhanced screening"...
The ion mobility spectrometry doesnt take mass of the ions into account but rather the size of the ionts which is why it can detect different isomers of the same compound. If it used mass and charge (mass spektrometry) it wouldnt be able to do that.
Really neat to hear the explanations of how their tools work. Though I do have to say, I can't count how many times I've had my hair fondled and picked through every time I've gone through security xD

It's like you knew I was taking a plane alone for the first time ever today! What a neat coincidence!
🎉🎉🎉🎉
A terrorist isnt going to carry a bomb from the middle east to use in the US they will make the bomb in the US.
kwad8 if the govt needs to pull another 9/11 these security measures won’t help much...
what happened on the ninth of November in 2001?
It was my birthday
C.F. Gauss Yes! I want to keep my sacred rights than having to deal with a terrorist attack!
Yes. C.F.

I'm a gunsmith and reloader as a hobby and my tools are in my room so on average 1/5 flights given I have handled loose powder they stop me (the longest time between handling powder and being stoped is 3days)
Here in Brazil, we just use the X-ray for the bags and the metal detector for the person.
Same in Ireland
Lorenzo Bolla de Oliveira Canada as well
Good old america likes to violate people to create a perception of safety.
Same throughout Asia and Australia.
in russia, you scan the metal detectors. And the bags scan the x-ray machine.
I want to learn more about the Airport Security because I'm Responcibility for Airport Security in East Timor.
I always respect airport security and if I get pulled aside I just do it. Not sure why people complain about it so much.
If you want to respect the people that rape your right to privacy that's your business. Others like to live in a free society and keep their rights and dignity.

All this fancy tech, yet the TSA fails 95% of the time.
MrRoboskippy They failed the Security Undercover tests conducted by the Red Team from Homeland Security, they still caught over 4000 guns at their airport last year, and the TSA do find explosives from time to time as well.*
And where did you get those numbers? I'm not saying you're not right, I'm just curious about the validity of your sources.
In the US, from what I have seen, you can request to go through the Millimeter wave scanner, but if you don't you will go through a metal detector. People with implants (Knees, back, etc.) usually do the scanner
I'm watching this for entertainment purposes only..
*TrUsT mE*
lol should we buy that?
My Swiss Army knife went through the scanner makes me disappointed in the tsa
I once forgot my filled water bottle when i went through airport security, the woman was like "This is illegal, drink it now or get a fine." I was like chug chug chug
It's so strange having to wait so long in TSA lines- in almost all of Europe and South Africa, where i'm from, all the exact same procedures are carried out but i've never waited longer than 15 minutes
I'd be curious to know how many incidents occur where explosives are caught by these machines. Very interesting.
this is fun because i used to work for a EST company. more of a charge vs volume thing than a charge vs mass, but darn close (Mass spectroscopy operates under a vacuum which makes charge vs mass very easy, but the machines in airports dont because vacuums are very expensive, bulky, and loud, so they use charge v volume)
In Malaysia...1. bag scanner 2. metal detector 3.body pat down and that's it lol
I don't know what causes it
It's security theatre, not actual security
Airport security check points are unnecessary for the same reasons why it's unnecessary to have security check points at bus stops and train stations.
It was even worse because my mom had me pack 6 granola bars, and they were loose in my bag >:[
Also, trust me.
Thanks , I have been trying to figure out how to bypass security.
Same
i don't know about other places, but the most strictest airport security I've ever been to are Changi & Soekarno-hatta. they will not give you smiley face or welcoming you. but I don't take it personally. sometimes they just doing good on their jobs.
I'm pleased to see how many people hates that security farce. I was thinking i'm alone.
bergonius what’s a farce?
This guy made it so simple and less nerve racking.
This is a crap ton of checks. Have they actually caught anyone by this?
(I haven't traveled by airport since 2000, and any other time I traveled by air I was flying a plane, or someone else was flying the private plane. Oh guess how much security I have to deal with when flying on a private plane :P)

Nice to see you here too. I like watching their videos.
I'm seriously wondering how many times this actually stopped a bad person from getting on a plane. Like it seems like it's just a waste of money
They didn't. At all. Look up the TSA episode of 'Adam ruins everything'.
i had adam in my head throughout the whole video haha
The TSA doesn't stop shit. It's all for show.
Craig Bennett II ofc they've caught at least one person
can you do a video on real-world applications for quantum computing for the day-to-day life?
4 minutes is a long time to say "it's bullshit."
Edit: That's not fair. Video contained plenty of science.
Nice Video Guys!!
It would have been useful if you discussed what happens when people with implanted devices which may be effected by radiation and magnetic field walk through. This includes people with pacemakers and neuromodulation units as it would provide people with them a better understanding of how it may affect their device.
Millimeter body scanners wouldn’t affect them at all but the metal detector would.
Meh, I'm sure it's fiiiine..."
absolutely no mention of the fact that it's all theatrics and has done exactly nothing to promote security
It happend to me last week. After i went through the metal detector, an airport officer took me apart for an ETD analysis. Very weird when you don't expect it.
nothing about laptop and liquid?
I once had to go into like, a full ircle thingy randomly. I had an operation when I was little, so that might have been to do with it. My sister also once had a random check at the airport, and when asked where her mum was (She was going home at a different time to us) my sister said our mum was still in the country. Then security pointed to me and asked if I was her mum. I WAS 12 AT THE TIME. My dad is also over 2 decades older than me. So, you know.
I'll never get on a plane if I can help it
Why?
“futuristic phone booths" lol, the future of phone booths is no phone booths at all.

I thought you guys were gonna talking about how research as shown useless this measures are and are only in place as "theater security", as in... they are a big show so the passengers feel they are secure, while actually doing nothing to improve security in reality.
Mateus Bittencourt they are also a way to deter people from moving around the world/country too much.
watching too much Adam ruins everything huh
you ever tried getting anything through a checkpoint? You know.... since its just "theater"
coveringend I did it, a lot of times, I don't wanna get in details since this is my personal account but I got things in a plane that you shouldn't be allowed to carry.
Airport at the start was Denver International Airport I think.
Took less than 30 seconds to tell a verifiable lie - "We can't make airport security suck any less". Yes, yes we can.

At first I thought you meant that you were a magician.

How come clouds are always flat on the bottom?
They aren't always flat on the bottom. There are many types of clouds that do not have flat bottoms. The common cumulus cloud is flat on the bottom because it is formed by rising air (thermals). As the air rises it expands and cools, when it cools past a certain point the moisture in the air condenses and becomes visible. That point is called the cloud base. You'll notice that al the clouds will have the same cloud base on a given day. The higher the cloud base the drier the air will be. Sometimes the bottoms of those clouds will be concave, that happens when then thermal feeding the cloud is very strong.
They're not?
Man, that was very helpful. Thank you for enlightening me 💡
Will someone with embedded magnets be allowed to fly...
Glorval MacGlorvas probably would be treated like earing or bone pins
If somebody has a pacemaker or hip replacement, they'll probably receive a pat-down search rather than a metal detector scan. Also most airports are moving to mm wave machines, which won't interact with metal implants.
what about MAGNETS though?
I have a pacemaker holding a pass/card that proves it. Generally they give me the choice to either get checked manually or to go through the millimetre wave scanner. Depending on the crowdness I just let myself get checked manually as they give me priority over the people in front ahahah.
i had never heard or used the 2 equipment u mentioned after door frame shaped metal detector...

New Zealand is so chill with airport security. They still only have metal detectors and bag scanners. We don't remove our shoes either. That's weird...
I got my bag swabbed once, didn't know why. Bit awkward but at least it didn't take too long...
My airport is now starting to use bag scanners that can scan your bag in 3d so you're allowed to keep laptops in the bag, how does that work?
what about drugs? will the x-ray detect a joint in the pocket of my jacket inside my bag?
Me and my family have TSA precheck so you can quickly get past security. You just get your bag scanned and walk straight threw a Metal detector
I have never seen a more haphazard system for security in my life like the TSA's.
Though I do have to say, I can't count how many times I've had my hair fondled and picked through every time I've gone through security xD
thank you that was cool
best thing if you can is to fly from smaller airports. the checks are the same but the queues are much smaller. get thrown in no time.
