My main complaint with Heat 5's crashes is that they don't get HALF as torn up and crumpled as they did and should. (Along with the unrealistic physics)
That's my real problem with it. Racing is adequate, can be challenging while staying casual fun, but the damage system feels almost non-existent at time. You can get tipped head on into the wall at 180+ MPH and get tagged by every car that was behind you but not only can you still drive, you can even become competitive after all the problems get absolved in a single pitstop.
The reason the damage model sucks and the cars dont get recked realistically is because the sponsors on the cars dont want their sponsor to get destroyed in media. Its kind of similar to burning a Bible infront of a christian, it will offend them because its part of their build.
