If I could only have ONE CAMERA

  • One camera and one camera only, this would be my choice. Of course your choice would probably be different because everybody has different needs and are in a different place in their lives. I've already taken millions of pictures so I don't need the biggest most expensive cameras any more. This is just my choice. I travel a lot and this is my best travel pocket camera and also the one I grab the most for B roll shots that cut really well with full frame. Almost every RUclips video I've made over the past two years were made with this camera.
There are still a few brand new ones left in the Sony store amzn.to/3I7FHfG

I know right!? This guy's the real deal. Now he's got me spending extra for a camera I probably don't need. I was eye ballin' the X-E10 and now I'm leaning toward this bad boy.

I completely agree with Markus! I have the RX100 MK6 and the image quality is fantastic. The 24-200mm lens is very clear at all focal lengths. This is why the camera is so expensive. I didnt pay full price tho...I was luckly...walked into best buy to look an open box video camera and they couldnt find it. Then i saw online they had the RX100 mk6 open box for $950. Reg price was $1199 back then. But they couldnt find it in the store. So the manager said he would give me a new one for the same price as the open box.
Then when i went to the register it rang up for $899. I didnt say a thing...paid for it and ran out the door. LOL.

I love these videos because this pro photographer is so down to earth, and he treats cameras as the tools that they are---a real minimalist. As someone who travels internationally I bought the A6000 sony camera a decade ago, or longer, because I wanted a step up from the small fixed lens cameras to something of much better quality, BUT that was still small. At the time the Sony a6000 was by far the smallest camera available with detached lens possibilities. Yes, the Sony rx1000 VII is a beautiful little camera :) I own it. But, I would hate to go on a long trip without the sony a6700 (the upgraded version of the a6000) with some great lenses. Bottom line, keep things simple, small, and lightweight. I never check my bags so I have to be so careful about equipment. Even the a6700 is a hassle to bring, and one thing photogs don't talk about, is that YOU BECOME A TARGET WHEN YOU ARE CARRYING AROUND A LARGER CAMERA, even APSCs. My Sony a6600 was stolen in Latin America along with all the lenses, something that would NOT have happened if I had been using a pocket-size camera.

i researched and waited patiently for the a6000 to arrive in 2014. Switched from a t2i dslr i found the focus wasn't good enough for action shots (or maybe it was me). A6000 was a real game changer. sadly it died on me in 2020 after 30k pics, not that much... now i use a6400 but i got into m43 also. i cant imagine action and sports, wildlife without my compact 600mm m43 kit (outdoor) or alpha (indoor and outdoor, street etc.).

I agree with you. While I love my RX10 III I don't want to use it on a once in a lifetime trip...unless I was afraid my more expensive stuff would get lost or stolen (I main a Z8 and an A7R4). I am going to Italy next year and I may not bring a higher end camera due to that fear.

    • @soneeeee4440

I don't think minimalists buy 1000s of pieces of high end gear... Depends what you're doing and the workflow. If you travel every week with a small bag then the smallest possible setup that gets you the results you need makes sense. As I get older I don't want to fuss as much and find the bells and whistles a useless distraction. Having said that, if you're spending millions of dollars a week on a star wars series or feature, the smallest lightest rig is irrelevant. Depends what you're doing.

So you can take the camera everywhere and take pictures/videos. this guy is an inspiration having the possibility to use the latest gear like any other fancy RUclipsrs ,but he always chooses to be real and with simplicity creates greatness.

I actually bought both the RX100 VII & RX100 V based on recommendations from a previous MarkusPix video from a while ago. I haven't regretted my decision. Awesome little camera's with a lot of professional features if you need to get into the weeds or just point & shoot if you can't be bothered playing with the settings. Perfect size for my use case which is travel videos & photography when I don't want to lug around a bunch of lenses etc. Thanks Markus!

After 50 years on this planet, taking pictures for 47 of them… I’ve had this camera since 2019, alongside both Canon and Sony full frame DSLR and mirrorless and I have to say this camera has been so darn versatile and yet capable across a breadth of applications and scenarios… it’s easy to just grab it on the way out the door as an EDC (Every Day Camera)… the results are fantastic… but that pocketability makes it addictive, when I’m without it, I feel like something is missing… worse than not having keys or wallet… nuts right… The RX100M7 is a bloody amazing bit of compact kit; can’t recommend having one enough. Great vid Markus, kudos!

I bought this camera 3 years ago and took it on two holidays...loved it and I have great photos and footage from those holdiays. Then, stupidly, I sold it as I had this craving for a mirrorless camera, assuming it would have to be better that my RX100 vii.
Whenever i looked a photos from the RX100 that came up on my google memories, the stand out images were always from the RX100 vii
So, I've finally got one again now and will NEVER EVER let it go! :-)

That reminds me about my late father, which had a pretty similar story like this - some 30 odd years ago.
Being an owner of photo-finisher store it would be no surprise that he had owned tons of (film, of course😁) cameras. At his peak in 80's I fondly remembered him carrying a MAMIYA 645 camera around his neck. Quality wise it would be pretty darn good - for sure. But when traveling while others in the trip would be busy enjoying that trip, instead he's mostly busy taking pics and dragging around a large heavy camera bag full of accessories...
Fast forward to early 90's he finally gave up carrying that MAMIYA or even any other hi-end SLR camera, and settled down to a CONTAX T2 as his "travel/all purpose camera". Much easier to carry around, and it sit in its own class above all other compact cameras at that time too.😎
If he's still alive today he'd be around 80, and more than likely to replace his T2 with an RX100 as his "travel/all purpose camera" as well.
PS: still miss you sometimes, dad.😶

I'm a ruthless specs nazi overlord and I will never repent. But I'm still tolerant of other people's choices to an equally extreme degree. I appreciate this video because that camera is probably the best in the world for taking pictures and shooting video, professionally, with the intent to sell your material afterwards, on sites that don't allow professional gear without expensive and complicated permits you have to apply for a long time before going there. Which takes all the fun out of exploring without a plan. Example: Good luck going into any building, church, cathedral or historical site in Rome with an SLR, even a small one, without someone popping right up to tell you can't use that camera there without one of those permits. With the RX100 VII, you're as covered, on the specs side, as you can be, and you'll never be accused of being a professional that can be milked for money anywhere.

This video took me way back in time. The last and only time I had ever been to Disney World was back in November or December 1974. Right before they were getting ready to open the space mountain ride. I wanted to go on that ride so bad. It why we went to Disney in the forst place. However, there were construction delays that keep us from riding it. Nonetheless, Seeing the ride in the background just took me back to when I was 7 years old.
I had to watch the video twice to actually pay attention to the content and not revisit my youth. either way. Thanks guys for all the content you put out.

However, I've actually enjoyed using my mobile phone for some photos too. I have a Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra. I've been really surprised and pleased with the image quality. Not great for low light, but I've gotten some surprisingly good shots with it. And since it's my mobile phone and it's almost always with me, it's my go-to every day camera.

It is the same as yours but no external microphone jack, (Dang it ) but I have a fluffy (mini dead cat), on the built in stereo stereo microphone to remove wind noise. Previously for years, I was using the RX100 and my Iphone both for every shot and some video. I just got back from trips to Eastern Europe and Japan. I left the camara at home and only use my Iphone x now. It is so nice to be able to text photos to family during the trip. Also printing to Cannon Selphy photo printer via WiFi at home is a plus too. I will soon upgrade my Iphone but the X still works and has good quality lenses etc...🤠

Well I guess the RX100 VI or VII would have to be it. It has a good zoom range, decent lens and decent image quality, plus it's not treated as a "professional" camera like an interchangable lens camrae. In fact I had a friend who went to a Chicago Cubs game with one and they let him use it, but the person behind him couldn't bring their DSLR in.
And I think while the RX100 and other 1" sensor cameras may not have the best high ISO performance or dynamic range (compared to a fully fledged APSC or FF mirrorless/DSLR) it will let you focus on photography and video more and less on gear. The interchangable lens version of this would probably be one camear body and a travel zoom, something that goes maybe from 24mm to 200mm. or 35 to 200mm. One lens, one camera, and that's it. But this I think is ideal for most things. Because when you're going on a vacation like to Disney World or something, it's about capturing moments and memories, not necessarily about dynamic range or pixel count or whether there's a ton of noise at ISO 6400 or not (there may be, but it's a bout capturing memories, a moment, and or emotion and I think that's one thing we've sort of lost with all the new cameras that can do 40 fps or 8k video, etc. We've become obsessed with camera specs and some of us have gotten so obsessed we have sort of deviated from WHY we photograph (or chose to take up photography) in the first place, because we are so engrossed with the specs and capabilities.... A camera like this, or doing the "one lens challenge" with a normal camera will free you to focus on photography or video and less on gear, and that's important. It's a hard thing to overcome but I think this is what sets the good pro photographers apart from the gear heads -- the pros pay attention to the details and specs, but they don't let it take over their photography and they don't obsess about 1/4 of a stop of DR differences between models or sensors. Stuff like that.

Thank you for your content Markus! Ever since I saw your video about Sony RX100 mark 7 I got really interested in it. Recently I was able to acquire a Sony RX100 mark V for 498$ and I truly enejoyed it . I’m looking forward to acquire this Mark 7 in the near future.
    Peace!

Great shots! You are both so youthful. Cara is beautiful! I'm so happy for you both. I will check out the RX100 mark 7. I just got the Sony A74. It doesn't overheat for video if you open all the accessory panels and battery door and set to high temp setting in menu.

I am new to this camera. You make the videos and photos look awesome. I wonder if you can or have done a video with some generalized settings on the camera of how you make everything look so awesome. I haven’t figure out how everything look so crisp and magical. Would you, or someone be able to point me to a video of yours that describes your settings as a starter?

Just start by putting it on Auto, its very good even that way. Then after a while progress to P mode where you can make it lighter or darker if you want.

That is some amazing results with a pocket camera (which were largely killed off by smartphones). Imagining showing up to do wedding photography, or other professional shooting with that!

    • @SMGJohn
      @SMGJohn 7 месяцев назад +14

Sadly they would not take you seriously, I was once hired to be secondary on a wedding shoot, the guy told me to bring my own gear but only gave me this message when I had arrived having nothing but my LX10 pocket camera usually I leave it in the car.
So I used that, ironically the guy had all the latest gear and I was snapping away with the tiny LX10.
After the shoot the married couple asked what camera I had used, and I showed them because they could not tell the difference between my LX10 pictures and the photographers 5DM2 pictures except the depth of field at certain points.
Still, they refused to pay my full share because I was not a "professional"
Dumb people judge by looks, always been like that.

Nope, I never did weddings anymore, the guy I worked for? He quit after 4 years and moved on.
Still got my LX10, and love it, as good as Sony? Nah, but its decent enough photography tool, I much rather use the RX100 for video though if I had a choice.
But like Markus says, its half the price, hard to argue.

The reason I would not use this (and many other decent cameras) for any pro work - especially weddings- is the single sd card. It's backup storage or bust for me. It's 2023 and I think every new camera should have memory backup (on board or card)

Your Sony camera sounds like the perfect travel cam and vlogging cam. Myself, I would go with the Nikon z6ii or z5 for travel, however the Nikon z30 is even smaller for travel. Thanks for demonstrating what the Sony can do.

Me Too. I take mine everywhere. I've had the 1 3, Still have the 4 (The 4 has It's quirks these days but as long as you know the work arounds, it's just fine ) and now the 7. I've even used them for videoing shows. They work great. .............. I shoot theatre's & performing arts academy's for which I use an A7iii for a show's production shots and a Canon 5d mk ii for headshots. I have 2 lenses 24-70 2.8 and 70-200 2.8 both canon L's. They work great on the Sony with a Sigma MC11 adaptor. Great Vids btw👍

Sensor, glass, optical zoom, and EVF all make a difference if you want very high IQ in a flexible package. Phones do a great job to a point, and they keep getting better. If I only had 1 camera, it would be my RX100m7, but when I'm shooting video, I find the ZV1m1 (same thing under the hood, really) to be a more convenient package. The 1" sensor in both truly punches above its weight. Very good work can be done with the RX100m7.

Another fantastic video. Showing it’s not the gear that matters it’s how you use it I used to own this camera but sold it because I hated it, usually use Fuji x gear. But looking back it was probably my fault not the cameras. That’s the difference between a Pro and a amateur “me being a amateur” all be it a good photographer but nothing like Markus 👍

Your favourite camera is a very personal thing. I have some decent Sony APSC cameras (a6000, a6300, a6700) with a variety of zoom and prime lenses for specific uses but my old silver Olympus EM5 M2 is the camera I reach for all else being equal. There is just something about it which makes me want to pick it up and play with it. Maybe it's the ergonomics or the retro look or its small size for an interchangeable lens camera, especially if paired with the pancake kit lens or a small prime like te 17mm (34 mm full frame equivalent). I am not an artist and just shoot for fun, in JPEG, , trying to get good pictures straight out of the camera ... at most with some small cropping and minimal adjustments in post. Great hobby !

... and a ZV 1 mark I in your other pocket for that one more stop of lowlight 1,8 vs 2,8 for inside video shots ... otherwise the two are virtually the same camera with the RX100M7 focusing on a zoom (200 mm) and photography advantage ... beautiful Disney World shots ...
