I never comment on music videos. It's like cheering in a crowd. But since Steve actually seems to read these, I figured I'd drop a THANK YOU. I never thought I'd hear a version of this that was better than the original...but hear we are. The studio version is great. The live version is awesome. But this stripped down version is SUBLIME.
Thank you for sharing your music with us. If for some reason you didn't already know it, you have made a difference in the world. You have touched our souls.
i mean........you're right, mind blown!
ditto
74 and still able to sing in the original key with no difficulty. Absolutely amazing!
This music is calming
Amazing
Indeed. I am grateful to resonate still.
Childhood favorite, even on my 10 wpc Sherwood receiver.
Please come to SoCal. .. I was expecting you with Steely Dan. Great show but we missed you!
In my opinion this is a masterpiece song by this extremely gifted Gentleman....
Well said.
Absolutely correct. Our generation is so blessed to have such a rich tapestry, and huge library of the best music in Human history.
Agreed. And this is an amazing performance. Shout out also to the man who wrote the lyrics, the late Jim Capaldi.
Lived in the same small lovely town 'Marlow ' on the Thames River , he had a beautiful Old House with with a beautiful wife, used to see them around the town
He was a wonderful musician
'Traffic ' still after fifty years of my favourites '!!!...
@@AntonyFleck He IS a Wonderful Musician, still, always & Forever.
Steve by himself on a Grand. That’s more than enough music. Jeez this guy is incredible.
My life may have been a train wreck, but @ 70 it's music like Steves that helped me find my way home.
indeed - traffic's musick is a 'beacon lite'
Hi Dave I’m right behind you @66. I still believe better days are yet to come and we’ll both get that wish to make things right.
Music is medicine
Steve, I couldn't have said it better. One can't beat a good turn table.😎🇨🇱
Amen, brother.
Interestingly, my husband just bought a copy of John Barleycorn and we are listening to it right this second. Steve Winwood is one of my most favorite musicians. Great songwriter, plays everything, such a soulful singer. Deserves so much more recognition than he gets. He is the real deal. Love him
Great album
@@djangodunn5968 I knew these records inside out when I was young but just listening again, that song, Empty Pages. What a great song, on an album filled with great songs.
Great Album, I love "Every Mother's Son", brings back memories of 1970 when I first began listening to Traffic when I was 17 .
@@amymalina5073 I saw Traffic perform this album in Wichita ks and was totally bummed by most off the crowds rude demands Traffic do old songs.
@@djangodunn5968 I never saw the group live, unfortunately. I grew up in New York and am old enough to have gone many many a night to the Fillmore East. But sadly, never heard Traffic, or Jimi Hendrix or The Band. Musicians I still revere. I did hear Leon Russell a couple of times though. My attention turned to jazz at a certain point so it is so nice to rediscover music that still sounds so great to me. Aren’t we lucky to have You Tube to hear great music and find people you can enjoy it with together.
The ONLY 60's vocalist on Earth who still has his complete 60's voice.
So true.
Oh and Van Morrison still sounds great !
@@jackwezesa1081 Eric Carmen does wellalso
@@davekinghorn9567 The Raspberries guy from the early 70’s !
I think Robert Plant is still excellent.....
This was the song that everyone in the room would just stop doing whatever they were doing and just listen to it from start to finish. It was just so obviously a masterpiece.
Exactly
Absolutely true
Never could be boxed up to fade into white noise
Wow, just wow. 74 years old and still bloody fabulous. 👏👏👏
Wow ... I wrote the exact same thing.. before I read your comment! Seriously! 65 here... I get it!
@@abelincoln3261 same here, all around.
He's like the best wine, time makes wonderful things.
The Artiste as the story of
'Less Is More'..
Winwood has more talent at 74 than all current British artists!
My "college sweetheart" sent me this LP back in '71, after she broke up with me. Talk about mixed emotions. But that was fifty-one years ago, we're still friends, and I still have that LP.
If you had just a minute to breathe, and they granted you one final wish, would you ask for something like another chance... jeezuz what lyrics, what an iconic, unforgettable and magnificent song. Thank you Mr. Winwood for this amazing recording.
If I gave you everything that I owned
And asked for nothing in return
Would you do the same for me as I would for you
Or take me for a ride
And strip me of everything, including my pride
But spirit is something that no one destroys
And remember this song was written in the 70’s, the prime of my life!!
Amen
So true. This guy has been part of my life. When I die my tune has to be While You See a Chance.
@@catherinekeane1901 Hello there. How are you doing today? Sorry for the inconvenience. Just want to make new friends 😊❤
Iconic, one-of-a-kind vocal that has absolutely never aged. From his teens to his 70s. Exceptional! Please play live again, Steve!!
Thank you for your kind words.
The man has had number one hits, but is still somehow, to me anyway, underrated. What a talent. What a genius.
Holy crap! What an amazing performance. This genius of a musician still has the chops. THIS is music. No auto tune. No helper backup vocals. He is the real deal. STILL! Thank you Mr. Winwood!
Yes thank you
Great comment Mike Morgan love Stevie ,by the way I'm Mike Mallis, M&M knows great music
this!!!! wholeheartedly agree.
Such a talent. Spencer Davis group, Traffic, Blind Faith, solo work, session work with all kinds of cool cats. Keep on rockin', brother!
Rock on!
Very versatile artist. Don't forget his work with Stomu Yamash'ta and the super group "Go"!
So good to hear from this great music-man. I grew up on this and I just consider myself SO lucky. What a time for music 🎶: 60s, 70s, 80s. And it was REAL. Rock on, everybody. Rock on....
Don't forget his Arc of the Diver which he did it all Instruments, Produce, everything.
One. Of the best @@stevewinwoodvideos
I'm as in love with Winwood's voice as I was 40 years ago. It's amazing to me how exquisite is it in its power, emotion, ache, and intimacy. What a gift. The melody and the piano are also excellent; I don't want to leave them out of my thanks.
That section “The percentage you’re paying is too high priced” is SO syncopated, with his left hand off beat and the lyrics on a different off beat, I have no idea how he can play that! Such a musical talent. I love Steve!
I know! He is so effortless most people don’t realize how hard this is. Love him.
60 years of practice
I totally agree!
I was thinking the same....I've always been impressed by how piano players are able to do this.......Of course I'm unable to understand how I've been able to play drums and sing for the last 57 years, but I'm most certainly grateful....Schizophrenia perhaps? 😅
Absolutely Brilliant!!!
Steve and the piano alone sound large enough to be the whole band together again. Superb.
There's a bass playing, though I never saw a bass player. Adds some depth, but as you say, Stevie's voice and a piano is enough.
@@joeldcanfield_spinhead
Hmmm, I thought the bass sound was Steve and left hand chords on the piano. I'll just have to keep rewatching this, which is no hardship at all! Thanks for cluing me in.
@@brendamilloy2557 Watch his left hand and there are spots where you'll hear bass while his hand isn't moving. I notice cause I'm a bass player.
that is what I wanted to write
@@JR3714 He could, but only if he's touching it: at about @3:30 the bass notes are playing as he lifts both hands from the keys to move them. Could be another person; could be foot controlled, could be a recording he made earlier.
I must have listened to the studio recording a thousand times. I like to pick a thematic element and concentrate on just that one thing. It was a real treat listening to Winwood just sticking to the keyboard and voice, not trying to pull other elements in. I don't know if it seems a bit thin to those who don't know the original, but this was perfect for me.
All I can say is thank you from high school 1971 to today!!!!!
Me too! Saw Traffic at Muhlenberg College in 1971 while in high school.
His voice still sounds exactly the same over the years. He is so amazing, love him!
I've been an ardent fan of Steve Winwood since his early days with the Spencer Davis Group and have nothing but awe in admiration for his enormous talent, creativity and proficiency on numerous instruments.
some artists reach heights twice. hall and oates is a good example of many who did. steve is a rare breed who did it four times
A great musician performing a truly great song. Thank you Steve for conjuring up brilliant music to match Jim Capaldi's magical lyrics. You've been the soundtrack of my life ever since the Spencer Davis Group. Keep on rocking.
Truly epic...i've listened to a lot of old Traffic, Blind Faith...and this man's voice has not changed in 50 years!
This was one of my dad's favorite songs - he would've been 73 this year. Traffic was a big deal back in his college days (1969-1973) and he spoke of enjoying Steve's music on several occasions.
One of the greatest songs ever written. Saw Steve perform in 80s during his height as a solo artist. he opened with this, and I thought to myself, “ I can die happy “.
Winwood is one of the best rock composers. So underrated! The soundtrack of my college days.
Steve Winwood was the lead singer for the Spencer Davis Group at age 14. The Spencer Davis Group released four Top Ten singles and three Top Ten albums in the United Kingdom, as well as two Top Ten singles in the United States between 1967 - 1969. Been one of my favorite artists since I heard "Can't Find my Home."
way
Didn’t know that! Wow
Brilliant! SDG was the best, simply the best! All these decades later the resilience and brilliance of their music lives on and penetrates my soul.❤
50 years ago he did this and wow just wow. God Bless Mr Winwood.
I swear he sounds EXACTLY the same
One of the most beautiful voices in contemporary music. I’ve been totally mesmerised since early Traffic albums.
Wow! 74 years old and his voice still sounds amazing!
Great song, Mr. Winwood. Never gets old, even though those of us who remember when this was originally released aren't getting any younger. Thanks so much for posting this version.
I'm turning my young niece onto great music such as this.🎸🎶😎🇨🇱
Takes me back to the days of pure music; no frills, art on display with a musician who will live on through his gifts such as this. Gave me the same happy and free feeling as the first time I heard the album...we still play it to this day, thanks for this and peace to all!
❤
Steve!!! Just came across your YT channel… us 60 ( 40, 50, 70 80] years olds owe you a huge debt of gratitude for your beautiful work over the years. I remember seeing you in Dallas in 1986, then again in Austin a week later. Happy, happy moments. I still live in Austin and your presence, in my mind, is still here.
Welcome aboard!
They just don't make them like this anymore! So much passion and talent!
Blimey, the sound he gets out of that grand. Full marks to the recording engineer too (credits show it's James Towler).
Yeah, and it's a Yamaha too. They usually don't sound this good.
It ‘s also the way he plays the instrument.
Ha! It has that too bright, too shallow sound of a Yamha baby grand. Dislike it - esp. the shallow poor intonation in the bass. Winwood sounds great though.
That inimitable voice. You know it the minute you hear it. One of the greats!
Steve's sense of time and rhythm are perfect. You could literally lay down a bass and drums to this and it would NEVER miss a beat. Steve Winwood is the real deal and few can even touch his talent.
I’m hearing a bass guitar, real or synthesised, as well as the piano.
@@samwilson2926 yes definitely a bass track from somewhere, and there's a rhythmnic click around 5:03. I don't see his fit tapping?
@@dave_manley He's using a looper I think
@@friedmans4 Don't think so. It appears he's wearing in-ear monitors so he could very well playing to a backing or click track. Don't get me wrong, not complaining, I love the man's music and have most of it on vinyl back to Blind Faith and Traffic's early albums. Also Stomo Yamashita's Go project. If you don't know it check it out, especially the track Crossing the Line, but for the full impact listen to the full album in order.
Listen to the original he recorded while part of Trafficl
Man, this just made my day. One of my all time favorite songs by one of my favorite musicians, and he still sounds amazing 50 years later.
…one of the best songs ever…
I could listen to this song every single day. Still takes my breath away.
This should be taught in all schools to aspiring musicians. All due respect and Thank you Mr. Winwood.

Is it just me or does anyone else hear that Steve's voice never aged like most of our legendary musician voices have most have troubles hitting the pitch like they used to but Steve sure can still sing his songs great that's amazing he must have been drinking some pretty dam good water all his life
This hits me just as hard as the original version did. That is saying a whole lot about how awesome Steve is still!
I concur. This easily could have been on the album!
Absolutely fantastic version of that song by SW! He certainly can find his way home on that piano! Thanks for the music Steve & hope that you are doing well!
Glad you enjoyed it
I met Steve July 4th 1986, Back in The High Life had just came our. I spent time asking about the lyrics to this song and the meaning behind the lyrics. My moment of fame.
Can you believe at 74 Steve Winwood puts out an "unplugged" version of this song. Sung flawlessly in the original key from when he was 24.
Christ what a legend
..I understand that Mr Winwood also plays in his home Church. You are a wonderful inspiration, as I also play on the Praise Team. I saw Traffic at the Spectrum in Pennsylvania. Awesome my Brother, respectfully, Chuck...captivus brevis...Blessings...I so enjoy playing your music 2024 I am 73 young...
Steve Winwood always makes it look and sound easy.......A masterful genius, indeed!!...
I loved this song, had the album back in High School! You still have such a great voice, Steve! ❤
I played that album so many times that I had to retire it and get a CD version.
The voice is still there, as is the ability!
We should all be thrilled to hear a new arrangement and seeing him so healthy and happy.
Traffic was one of the greatest bands of all time and their catalog should be acknowledged more often by others as well.
Absolutely stunning!! Impeccable timing, sublime piano and masterful vocals. 🙏
I was stationed in West Germany in the early 70s and this was one of my favorite albums. Thank you Traffic for the music that got me thru the Vietnam War era.
Memories of week end parties with Traffic playing in the background ALL NIGHT LONG! Oh I miss those days of a carefree life, barely surviving day by day and having a ball!
Just like when I discovered the video of Steve playing John Barleycorn solo in front of his fireplace, I feel like it’s such a privilege to hear him do Low Spark solo on the piano like this. Thank you Steve Winwood for all your many years of contributing great music to my ears, and for letting us experience this classic in this stripped down fashion, so stark and beautiful.
Steve is one of the few that can utilize both sides of his brain it seems. Such a brilliant solo arrangement of one of TRAFFIC's signature tunes ! The camera work is awesome to match the tune .
I loved this song for a thousand years and it never gets old. Well done Mr. Winwood.
Your voice has only improved with age... one of the greatest voices in the history of music!!!!!
I first had this on an 8-track where Low Spark had its own track - so I'd listen to it then click the player 3 times to start Low Spark again - and I remember driving all night cross-country playing it for hours upon end....it's imprinted in my mind. This version totally is awsome and it is so wonderful to hear variations on a theme.
Steve Windwood is a Powerhouse . From 1966 Spencer Davis to Blind Faith to Traffic to GO LIVE and his Solo Catalog is just Fantastic.
SW played on JIMI Electric Ladyland to Joe Cocker.
Hasn't lost anything. Tremendous Talent. Love him.
Just Piano Voice and Spark .
So Good.❤
Steve Winwood makes it challenging for me to remain Agnostic...
Saw him in concert when he was in Blind Faith. Winwood, Grech, Clapton, Baker...Lifetime concert
Thank you for this sir. The song still sends a chill down my spine. Listened to this album on cassette over and over in my down time while in the Navy off the coast of Vietnam in 1972. A true masterpiece this song is.
1972: 8-track (before cassettes).
Heard this song for the first time last year (thanks to Gideon Coe’s lamented late night show on 6 music) whilst going through some tough times, it got me on first listen and just struck a chord. Straight in as one of my all time favourites tracks, how I got to 46 having never heard this is a mystery!
Steve Winwood has more talent in his pinky than 99% of crap released in the last 20 years..
I love this so much. It warms my 68 year old heart. Yea, it's nostalgia, but it's also just a great song performed brilliantly.
Steve's voice still gives me head to toe goosebumps, right up my spine to the top of my head!
40 years of Loving & playing this album! So many Great Memories to this music!
🎶⛰🏡🌠🏔🎶
I'm old enough too remember when FM radio was just becoming a thing. My dad dabbled in "electronics" we had a FM tuner I learned how to run signal thru a tape recorder Amp and put it into some home made speaker cabinets. One night that song came on, it was just like discovering gold. And it's still gold.
Wow!!!! Mr. Winwood, your voice is as beautiful as ever. Thank you for sharing with us 😊
Thanks for listening
Wow, he sounds the same as he did in the 60s and 70s. This song and John Barleycorn ROCK!!!
Brings back memories of an unequaled time in music. I don't think it will ever be replicated. Genius. Most people don't even know about platform shoes😂 Okay, admittedly, they were pretty silly 😜
I thank WMMO in Orlando for introducing me to the original studio version. This version passed the litmus test of a truly great song - can you unplug it and not lose any power? The answer here is a resounding yes.
This is one of the top songs in my life's soundtrack. Thanks, Steve. You are the music man.
Steve Winwood is a gifted musician. Church organist, guitarist, pianist with a great voice as well as being an improviser and writer.
A rare talent…. Why he hasn’t been knighted by his country is a big shame!
Producer too. He did it all on the Arc of a Diver album. Considered one of the top 300 albums of all time. All from his home studio.
My introduction to "Low Spark..." happened before the album made it to the stores. I was at a party and the party lasted all night. I fell asleep next to a turntable that had a record playing on it. The turntable though never stopped and kept playing over and over again throughout the night. The album was "Low Spark..." and side side playing had the title track. I felt mesmerized by this song and when I looked at the album I was surprised I wasn't aware of this Traffic album. The next day I searched every record store and it wasn't available as of yet. One of my friends at the party had a brother who was a DJ at a radio station and that album was the promo copy. I saw Traffic live the same year, great concert.
So powerful, even without a band. Better than I would have imagined. Few songs stand the test of time like that one.
Went to see Eric a few years back... Stevie Wineood was also there and he stole the show. He was brilliant.
When I was in high school I bought the "The Low Spark Of The High Heeled Boys" LP when it was first released, 50 years ago. I still have it. Back then I didn't have a stereo so I stored my albums at my father's stereo system in the living room. He found this album, listened to it, and thought it was great too. So he made a cassette he would often listen to in his car. The album has aged well and I still listen to it today.
The sound of this rendition is particularly good. Normally as musicians age they lose what they once had, especially their voice. But Mr. Winwood's voice is still the treat it has always been. This solo style performance shows his timing is excellent. But I am not surprised. When Mr. Winwood was a child he was too good for his age and he just got better, there is no downhill slide. Mr. Winwood is one of the most talented song writers and musicians of my lifetime.
Perhaps the most influential rock musician and vocalist ever. What a stunning career starting with "Gimme some Lovin" at the ripe old age of 18!! His work with rock legends is beyond amazing, but his solo work is some of the finest music ever. Steve is an icon and has been for almost 60 years!!! What a beautiful man.
OMG.. 🙏 Steve Winwood. Your voice has not diminished at all. This song stands the test of time.
Thanks so much for sharing this with us, Mr. Winwood. :)
We are so fortunate to be alive today absolutely amazing performance
When I saw you do this solo version in Houston June 2009 in your show with Clapton I loved it then and still do now. I recall that Eric and the band all walked off stage and left you to perform it by yourself , and the audience leapt to their feet with a long loud ovation when you finished..Great way to present this iconic song, totally stripped down with those wonderful vocals. I wore this record out 50 years ago but appreciate it maybe even more this way....WR
I was sitting in my studio playing this song and wanted to hear the middle part and found THIS version. It sounds just like me playing in the earphones except it is perfect including an amazing vocal. I hope I can go back to my playing - it might be hard after hearing this perfection.
What a holiday gift! Steve Winwood has managed to distill the very soul of his original work into this gem. Part of the Soundtrack of the Seventies.
Part of the Soundtrack of My Life ;)
This song is therapeutic.
Thanks Mr. Winwood for such great art.
As I listen to this beautiful version I can still hear Jim Capaldi playing his wonderful interlocking counterpoint grooves w/ Mr. Winwood.
He sounds just like he did 50 years ago when he made the album...a genius that has aged extremely well!
Such a great musician. I probably listen to this song at least once a week. Traffic and Cream are definitely two of my favorite all time musical groups. Now if we could just get Stevie Winwood and Eric Clapton to do just one more tour.
