Yall do a great job at explaining and breaking down these stories! It helps me with better understanding the readings that I have for my English class, so thank you for the good discussions. Keep it up!
Just finished reading this story in Spanish. It’s compelling but confusing and your discussion is excellent. I really enjoyed it and will reread this fascinating story.
I think you nailed the definition of magical realism. I’ll have to go back and read this again, but when I read it last I thought he was a fallen angel (biblical sense) who fell to earth in cursed place and regained some of his angelic properties through small acts that had positive effects. But I think your interpretation is likely the right one.
I found your more faith-based interpretation very interesting. Not sure I agree in every aspect, but I find your takes well founded and illuminating. What a great story.
If I were to have read this story without knowing who wrote it, I would have guessed this was written by Steinbeck. With the exception of the supernatural aspects, this was similar in style, setting, etc.. to Steinbeck's typical storytelling. I enjoyed this story immensely, but I think the theme is kinda muddy here. The whole time, my focus was on the boy. I was expecting the angel to carry the boy off at the end, but that never happened. I like your take that the reader's focus probably should be on the townspeople rather than the family or the angel. Even then, thematically it seems a bit murky still to me. 7/10.
Oh that's interesting. Yeah, if you add Magical Realism into Steinbeck do you get Garcia? I agree it's muddled. I can't explain why sometimes that works for me and sometimes it's an issue. I don't know how to articulate my waffling.
The angel's circus-attraction value, allowing fam to charge admission, I thought is what saved the boy. That allowed the family to empower their health by improving their home and social standing. But of course they never appreciated the angel's humble, long-suffering sacrifice. Reference to ``sterile hearts'' I thought ironic, because although cleanliness is a valued trait, ``sterility'' is too extreme; a sterile home is neither appealing, comfortable nor restful. A sterile person cannot procreate. Of course Marquez mocks the priest along w/the rest of humanity.
Will Gabo be forgotten or installed as a star in the heavens? Fernando Birri? Luis Alejandro Velasco Rodríguez, the shipwrecked sailor whose rocket ship of fame so dramatically rose and fell. A tale of apotheosis or obscurity? Children take note and thank goodness for Gabriel Garcia-Marquez…you too may someday rise from tempestuous seas, fly over the rainbow, beyond the moon of green cheese. Thelxinoë
It's like Nazareth. Jesus's hometown didn't receive him and it blocked the miracles. It seems to me to be a rebuke of the church. They aren't really seeking after God, and aren't interesting in hearing what he might have to say to them, but they exploit for their own gain ... and turn it into a carnival.
A man is not an angel. Men envy angels because they’re immortal, but angels envy men because they are mortal which makes life supremely precious. Garcia Marquez grasped this and wrote about it at the end of Love in the Time of Colera. “…it is life, not death, that has no limits.” ruclips.net/video/lv_VgnkL70s/видео.html
I read "One Hundred Years of Solitude" a few months ago and I can now say... I'm not a fan of "Magical Realism". I found his writing style confusing, and hard to follow, especially the characters names, some having the same name (in that book). I'm also not a Fan of allegorical themes in a story. So I guess this Author is not for me. I know I'm one of the few people that feels this way about one of "The Greatest Books Ever Written",and I tried so hard to like it. So, I'll take a pass on this short story.

That’s a great point on Nazareth!

I haven’t read that one yet. Oddly enough, I just read Annabel Lee by Poe which had some similar themes. Thanks for sharing
