I can’t help but wonder how personal this story was for Alice Walker. She went away to school, studied in Africa, and married a Jewish man. What was her reception when she came back to the farm where she was born and raised? So many interpretations are possible!
Krypto's interpretation with King and X is really great, actually. I read this story in university, and wish I had made that connection at the time haha. Look forward to "The Color Purple" analysis!
I just recently discovered your channel when looking for an analysis on a story I had to read for class. Now I am binge watching, haha. You guys analyze a lot of stories I have had to read for my class! I recently did a paper on Everyday Use. Glad to watch/listen to your analysis.
This is one of my favorite short stories. I enjoyed your discussion. I had never thought of the Martin/Malcolm angle to the story but it makes sense. The first quote you used is my favorite quote from the story.
Wow! I now want to read this short story! Krypto's insight in the analysis section was fascinating. Amazing how a short story can have great emotional impact and illustrate such important themes. Great review!
Love this short story! I am teaching this shortly before reading A Raisin in the Sun… definitely going to share this video with my classes…Thank you for sharing your insights!!!
Super helpful analysis. And Krypto’s MLK/Malcom X comparisons blew my mind. So good! My only confusion is, how do we know for sure that Dee burned down the old house? I know the story mentions Dee watching the house go up in flames, but I never caught mention that Dee was actually responsible. It seems key. Any help?
Google says: 'Dee may or may not have caused the house fire in Alice Walker's short story "Everyday Use."'. So if we both assumed she did, there is the perspective that she didn't regarding your comment. Cheers.
