I like your insight about the couple becoming annoyed with something they should be grateful for-in large part due to the fact that the angel doesn’t meet their expectations. I think that’s right on. Marquez leaves us somewhat perplexed, even nonplussed about the “meaning” of the story, as it’s meant to be a somewhat ambiguous, serendipitous encounter with the extraordinary. And although it proves to be fortuitous for the couple, they are glad to see him go as even an angel can overstay his welcome. Lot of ways to parse this story, which is precisely what makes is so good-that and the prose. Magical realism has always sought to make the ordinary extraordinary and the extraordinary ordinary, or at least more familiar and less shocking than we might think. Never once is anyone shocked to learn that an old man has wings, even the doc, or that a lady has turned into a spider. Magic is almost, not quite, but most commonplace in Marquez’s world. Even more so in 100 Years of Solitude. A more complicated story, but definitely worth the time if you enjoy this type of writing.
