"The 2nd track we wrote for the record and one that shows some entirely new ideas for the band to date. We feel this one is more in line with our current ideas and writing and one that allowed us to create something new, as opposed to feeling tied to our younger times that we felt unable to escape when creating ‘Corrosion of Hearts’. There’s plenty of melodies and ideas from our past within this one but it feels inspired and explores some slightly new territory. From some more ‘rock’ riffs that evolve into an epic and atmospheric sound. Personally for me, I feel this one is a little nostalgic in the sense that it reminds me of a particular group of Swedish bands I listened to when I was younger." --- Austere

Always loved the atmosphere from this band. This song is amazing, and I like this ''Just for a moment'' formula, but I hope that they add more blast beats and more raw stuff. Their EP is legendary and is a great mix of atmospheric dbsm. Its great to see this project still going after a long iatus.

I thought fans of this specific metal style would be at peace with the inevitability of change, because it's as inescapable as death. It's impossible for a living person to avoid the molding force of time. I welcome the band's evolution, although this opinion is biased because I'm a general fan of Katatonia-style rock/metal and various kinds of unorthodox black, esp. one that's been injected with post-metal and shoegaze. That’s why the two new songs and half of the "Corrosion of hearts" are perfect for my ears.
With time their music became obviously an easier listen, which isn't a negative thing for me. For example, Faded ghost, a shorter and more traditionally-structured piece, became an instant earworm. The newer songs have easily perceptible and more streamlined flow of sound, the unrelenting loops and slow waves that induce a trance-like state; they envelop, immolate, grind down, exhaust, depending on the song's intent. They effectively induce the mood (anything from a gloomy spectrum) that stays for a while, echoing in mind long after the song is over.
Austere continue to create sprawling soundscapes of mature, humbling immensity. The magic is still there, just a bit different. The most important thing for me, when listening to any band, is to know they're making exactly the kind of music they want to make at the time and not forcing themselves (or forced) into something they aren't. Awaiting the new release with content anticipation.

Down in the comments to this song, and in the comments to the other singles from BtT they kinda explained what their gripe with the new material is. I recall "boring and uninspired", "sounds like generic blackgaze band", "it's mellow, no strong emotions anymore - more fit for schoolchildren", "lacks ambition" and "a rush job" among others. My perception of the new songs was positively different (it's reflected in a longer comment under the full album), and it stayed that way after several listens.
Even if the band members themselves were to confess they just did a hack job with BtT, I'd reply that they should consider selling courses on how to write a quick cash grab that sounds fresh and catchy like a truly inspired album.
In the end it's down to everyone's personal tastes, but imo Austere made just that - a truly inspired album, but the change in sound and vocal approach was significant enough to turn a number of old fans away.

A band recycling the same material is boring. They evolved and i am satsified with what i am hearing so far and i am a fan since ''Withering Illusions and Desolation'' there's even some of the old material riffs at 3:23 as a wink from the band, idgf about the cover art as long as the music is good
