I don't know if you'll ever see this, however I want to let you know your method saved my SoH. I bought a SoH a couple years ago and it grew leggy but nicely. I went through a depression this fall and winter and neglected so many of my plants. My SoH was dying off and I realized that about the time I got out of my funk. In the beginning of the spring I remembered your video and took what remained of my plant, got an old to go container, and did what you said in this video. I left the bagged plant on a semi sunny window sill and let it be for a few weeks. Not too long later I checked and not only had they rooted but the rooted plants had grown new leaves! I quickly snipped up a bunch of the segments and planted half of them in a pot with a sphagnum/soil mix, and left half in. I even put root enzyme on some of the new sections which have also grown new roots. I now have two pots of beautiful, baby SoH with more coming. Hopefully I'll have enough to one day gift to friends and family.
I’m glad people do videos on this topic, thanks. I made the mistake of putting my chain of hearts that is as long as my leg (but a bit longer than that) outside for the summer to give it a glow up in perfect conditions. It worked perfectly and even bloomed profusely, and then this morning I walked out to find it completely shredded by friggin’ SQUIRRELS who dug up the hanging pot to hide food for winter. Heartbreak ensued. One lone strand remained rooted in dirt. The whole rest of the plant had the many many long strands broken off up at the base. Lesson learned the hard way, I guess. Wild animals be WILD, and they will mess your stuff up!
Oh hell no I'd be pissed and wait for those little bastards to come back and shoot their ass with a BB gun just to be a bitchh😂 but like u said they're wild animals, thankfully you can propagate the cuttings they left
Had something similar happen to the first Sempervivums I tried to propagate. Since I had to do a lot of repotting and clearing out parasites I put the newly rehomed plants and their pups outside to wait out any possible remaining pests. What I didn't know however is that mice enjoy munching on these leaves. So one morning I walked up all excited to my plants only to find a murder scene! The meanest thing was that they took out some of my favorites too with gorgeous red tips😭
I had ordered strings of pearls, hearts, tears, fish hooks, bananas, dolphins and ruby necklace from one lady on Facebook. When I received them, her suggestion was to take each strand and cut it down into 3 in pieces. Minus the hearts. She told me to do these a different way and I listened and I'm so glad I did. With those she told me to cut them as you did, you cut them in half but she told me to cut them up into their own individual butterfly aka node. So basically she sent me a string that had five groups of two hearts. (Each growth point generally has two hearts) then she told me to put them on the soil or coco peat or whatever you choose to use, with the nodes just under the soil but not the actual leaf as you said. Within a month, those cutting points and courage to new growth just as yours did when you finally cut them. And with all the other strings that I propagated that she told me to cut down into 3 to 4 in pieces, they have grown like he would not believe. I wish I could show a picture. So basically if somebody tells you to cut your hearts or cut any of your strings down into pieces to propagate, listen. Lol it definitely helps. The smaller the pieces, the more growth you will get. One mistake that I made with my strings of everything besides hearts was not laying them on top of the soil But instead just sticking each end down into the soil. I would probably have more than I have now but I'm totally okay with that because I have so many of my strings right now I cannot even tell you. 😊
Botamical Woman !! Ibought a large clump of Ring of Hearts a while ago ,hoping to get some rooted cuttings , your video did the trick , l now have several plants growing vigorously, I have more than enough to give some to my friends ! Thanks 😎
Good video. I have found that by misting the plant 2-3 times a week ensuring that the vines and nodes are moist causes the plant to start new growth. This also makes the plant fuller. Also by spaying the leaves and vines inside the hanging pot, new vines/ leaves will also develop. After a while you will see the nodes getting very large. This is when I start taking cutting and either starting a new plant or sticking them into the top of the plant to make it bushier. Although mine has trailers that are 4-5 feet long and growing trimming it back to 2-3 feet causes it to grow inside and outside of the hanging pot making it fuller. It needs light not sunlight although the variegated does better in bright to middle sunlight which causes the pink to be darker. I haven’t tried water propagating but have found that Moss and soil work very well.
I received some cuttings and am using this method to propagate. I used a blueberry container. It’s been a week and a half and I can see one visible root but I have a few new sprouts that are growing fast. I just want to be sure I’m doing it right going forward. I should wait until I get more roots before cutting, correct? The new growth is already hitting the lid of the container so I will leave the lid slightly open and check the moisture a few times a day. Up to this point I have used peat moss and a couple of Bobby pins where the plant wouldn’t lay flat. I have it about two feet away from an east facing window that has a tree in front so the light isn’t direct. I usually give it three sprays of water with the bottle about 8 inches away from the plant and keep the container in a gallon ziplock that I close halfway. I open the container every morning to check on them. I live in Las Vegas, so it’s not a very humid environment. (I’m including the details in case it helps anyone out.) Thank you for the info!
Thank you for sharing! So happy this is working for you! as to when to cut the cutting, I would say you can wait a little bit for a slightly stronger plant so in case anything happens, it can withstand it.
Hi! I have tried propagating on soil (but from the tip of the cut strand) and on water and both have been a total failure so far! (even though everyone seems to say that it is easy!). I saw your video and just potted a strand that broke your way! I am looking forward to the results! Thank you for sharing!!
Ciaooooo!! Ti scrivo dall Italia 😁 grazie per i consigli! Proverò questo metodo per propagare questa deliziosa pianta!!🌱🌿 Grazie e arrivederci!! Silvia
During propagating, how much light does is require. I’m using peat moss and in a ziploc container. What’s the best medium once you’re ready to transfer ?
I tried this with tiny little cuttings (two leaves on each) and it has worked great so far! I'm wondering when is the best time to transfer the plants to another medium, or do you keep older plants in the same medium as well? Thanks!
Yes!!! Thank you!! I wanted to know also if a new plant would develop at each node and no one I’ve watched has posted any to say so in their videos. I have only one cutting and I was wondering if I should wind it up in the grow pot and see is I could grow a fuller plant. Thanks again
Thank you for the information! I've got one small string I'm working with and have had it sitting on water for about four weeks. Oddly, the plant has pushed out an entire new set of leaves and stem this week yet there's absolutely no hint of any roots still. Have swapped the cutting to this method as it sounds better and I'm not just relying on the one node in the water to push the roots out. Will see how it goes
I'm scared to cut my string of hearts, it's like my heart will break because I spent months to get it back. The white pest thing almost destroy it. Now I have 4 a meter each long strands 😊
if you want to propagate it to get a fuller plant, you can lay the strands on some soil, it will start rooting, planterina calls it he pony tail method.
Thanks a million for explaining the correct way of propagation in such a easy way. I ve a query please🙏 answer it's that how to get bigger leaves from any kind of propagation ? + how to get pup on bare succulents stem.
Can you use any moss? Can I just pick moss from nature or does it need to be prepared specifically in order to minimalise bacterial infection/parasites?
Hi.. amazing video.. just wanted to know.if i have to use polybag or not as in my place the humidity is always around 70%. Please reply.. my plant is almost on the verge of dying
how long do you wait for the roots to get before you plant it in it's usual medium? I want to put the cuttings back in with the mother plant but I don't want to take them out too soon.
the idea is to keep it lightly moist, too much moisture will cause rot. so I can't really tell you how manys days, you need to just observe what is happening with your prop. and yes you can just spray over the how plant, its fine.
I just subscribed. You are so great. Heartfelt thanks, I have propagated SoH in water, but was looking for something to fill out the top of my parent plant. I am going to do this right now......such fun! SoH is a favorite for me.
My SOH prop started to grow a root that is like half a pinky nail long and it also sprouting new leaves. Should I keep it in the ziplock to help the root grow longer or will that hurt the new leaves?
I have used this method but am propagating on soil using pins, and a bag over top to keep moisture in. I now have fuzzy roots! I wasn’t sure what to do, so I buried the fuzzy roots in the soil. Is this ok?
hmm an hr or two? just enjoy to dry it out a bit but you can alway mist it again it is too dry. the leaves will rot if its too moist so thats what you're really trying to prevent.
Last month I bought a plant and on the soil I have found a single leaf of String-of-hearts. Seeing that it looked fresh, I decided to see if that was because it rooted. It has been living for a while and even formed a potato-like tuber at its base. I will wait as it's just a matter of time until it sends a new shoot. Have you tried leaf propagation? What was your experience with this method?
I have not tried just propagating a leave, but thats really cool that it worked out for you. as long as you keep watering it when it dries, i am sure you will get a new baby plant! so cute! Thank you for sharing!
yes totally, just lay the nodes on top of the soil and if you really want to help it root, i would increase the humidity. since you have a small plant, i would put the whole thing in a zip lock bag for a few weeks so it can develop new roots! good luck
Hi there, just came across your video! I’m excited to try this. Just a quick question, was the moss initially moist/damp? Or did you wait certain number of days to spray with water? Thanks!!
Yeah that should be fine, you just want it to be a light and airy medium. The moss would stay more wet though, so you may want to put it in a bag or something to increase the humidity. Good luck
Girl, I can't believe you don't have more views and likes on this video! I've bought some cuttings (and not rec'd them yet), so I've been watching every video out there on and your way looks like the healthiest, safest and probably easiest way to do it!! Liked & subscribed
Thanks so much Lauren, your support means a lot to us! =) I need to post an update of my string of hearts, it's doing really well. I hope your cuttings do well too, it sounds like you're being a thoughtful plant parent
@@BotanicalWoman Thank you for the reply! I saw someone mention cacti soil, between that and perlite, which would you recommend? would we use the same method in this video and storing it in a zip loc bag as well?
I'm propagating my string of everything ( hearts, fig, pearls and turtle) in water and they doing great. I use water and soil propagation both just in case one medium gives up.
I really love this plant. Since I'm older...lol...how long does this process take??? I would love one of these, however, buying a specimen might be a better option fo me. Lolol. Loved this video Christine! Thank you. 👱♀️💜
It will probably take between 3 or 4 weeks to see new growth depending on the circumstances such as humidity. I received my initial cutting just under two months ago so what you see in this video has all grown in that time! 🌱🌱🌱
that usually happens when its not getting enough water. do you water it until water comes out of the drainage holes? Give it a good watering and let it dry out and repeat! =) Good luck!
i don't like using sphagnum moss as you need to remove as much as it as possible before planting it up. in doing so you risk breaking the roots and if you don't remove enough, you can get root rot..to many things to worry about. i rather propagate in something that i can pot up easily
@@BotanicalWoman thank you so much for the reply, I have been waiting patiently for the mail man to bring me my new rooted cutting, i just want it to have the best start to life. I love your channel and plants x
For the propagating, what is the best place to leave the plant? In a light or a dark place? sun or shadow? Thanks for sharing! seems like a fun method!
I haven't experiment with that, the only thing I can think of is when using smaller leaves they hold less moisture so may dry out? otherwise it should be fine
Could I propagate in perlite alone? Also thank you for the vid! Mine came in the mail with a node but it broke off immediately 😭 so I’m trying to salvage my little cutting
Hi! Love your videos! I got 4 cuttings and decided to try this..3 are still thriving and have the little white fuzzy roots, everywhere! When should I put this on some potting medium? Thank you so much and please keep putting out these excellent videos 👍💞
Thank you! I usually don't wait too long so about 1 cm to 1 inch. just remember everytime you change the environment for your babies, it has to spend energy to adjust. 💚
Hi! Seems really fun, I would love to try it, what moss did you use (as I didn't quite get that in the video). Will sphagnum moss work? I'm a beginner here :P
I tried this since I got some cutting from a friend... she said her cuttings didn’t root in water so I gave this method a try and 1 week in a have roots growing! Thankyou
Be sure to check out my latest String of Hearts update on watering to see how this cutting is doing today: ruclips.net/video/Gk3p7IzwGIA/видео.html

any news with this one? hehe
I have done it using moss with good results and with soil. It’s impossible to keep the nodes moist by misting.
Finally a video that actually demonstrates how it's done idk whether mine will survive but the video is very informative
Thank you so much... this method help my string of heart develop new roots... I was so desperate back then

thanks for sharing this! I just got a variegated string of hearts strand and I hope this helps multiply it!
do you think leca would be easier than coco peat?
I always had problems propagating this plant I tried multiple methods without success, I will definitely try your method. Thanks for sharing.
yes, i am excited for you. let me know how it goes, love to hear from you =)
How did it go?
Helloooo…
I have seen several string of heart propagation…
What is the purpose of the bulb!
May i use perlite if i dont have Moss?
My string of hearts has about 15 leaves in total so I'm definitely going to try this. I also already use coco coir peat as soil so this is perfect!
Wonderful! I hope you get a fuller plant soon! =) once they are established, they grow pretty quickly!
Botanical Woman I can’t wait! They are such cute plants!
How much light do you expose the propagating plants to?
OMG!! I didn’t know that you could propagate string of hearts this way! Way better of an option that cutting off leaves and putting them in water.

how long do you wait for the roots to get before you plant it in it's usual medium? I want to put the cuttings back in with the mother plant but I don't want to take them out too soon.
Does this work with peat moss as well, as long as it’s kept moist?
Hello! How many days should i wait for before i do the 1st spray of water? And when i do, can i spray over the leaves or just on the coco peat?
the idea is to keep it lightly moist, too much moisture will cause rot. so I can't really tell you how manys days, you need to just observe what is happening with your prop. and yes you can just spray over the how plant, its fine.
@@BotanicalWoman thank u!!
Once the roots have developed and you no longer use the bag, are you leaving the container top open as well?
So the cuttings that went in the peat moss were never route it in water correct?

Aww Thank you! Happy to help your SOH grow! I love mines too! Such an easy and beautiful plant!
Should you put in in bright area or darker? Do you need to airdry first or you van directly plant it right after cutting?
Can this same method be used for string of pearls?
This video is the best! Most objective and creative ! Thank you 🙏🏼
😊 thank you💚
I have one strand with 4 leaves and its in dirt and its starting to produce leaves.
When you initially put them in, did you fully water it or just spray?
My SOH prop started to grow a root that is like half a pinky nail long and it also sprouting new leaves. Should I keep it in the ziplock to help the root grow longer or will that hurt the new leaves?
I have used this method but am propagating on soil using pins, and a bag over top to keep moisture in. I now have fuzzy roots! I wasn’t sure what to do, so I buried the fuzzy roots in the soil. Is this ok?
cute! yeah thats fine, the roots will find their way but a little help doesn't hurt just be gentle!
How long would you have to leave the container open for air before putting them back in the ziplock?
hmm an hr or two? just enjoy to dry it out a bit but you can alway mist it again it is too dry. the leaves will rot if its too moist so thats what you're really trying to prevent.
New subscriber! Thank you for showing us how it's done, which is what I wanted to do.
So am I to use only cocopeat as the potting media to plant a SOH? I'm not talking about propagation, I'm asking for the plant itself
i am not sure as i have not done this. just keep in mind that coco coir holds a lot of moisture
Do you need to wet the medium before you add your cuttings?
Just a little bit , not too moist though
this is so interresting. I will defo propagate mine now

Could I do this while it’s still attached to the plant? Mines really little and I don’t want to kill it x
yes totally, just lay the nodes on top of the soil and if you really want to help it root, i would increase the humidity. since you have a small plant, i would put the whole thing in a zip lock bag for a few weeks so it can develop new roots! good luck

Can you use Wet paper towels instead ? Or does it have to be moos
that could work. the plant just needs a moist medium
Can I just put the string back into the same pot and cover it with soil?
you can but it's not likely to root. to ensure that it does, higher humidity is required
Hi there, just came across your video! I’m excited to try this. Just a quick question, was the moss initially moist/damp? Or did you wait certain number of days to spray with water? Thanks!!

perlite should work holds less moisture so you may need to mist it more depending on your setup
@@BotanicalWoman Thank you for the reply! I saw someone mention cacti soil, between that and perlite, which would you recommend? would we use the same method in this video and storing it in a zip loc bag as well?
either is good. each just has different MOISTURE retention. if you have cactus mix you can use that
I use cactus soil, I am so excited about the results 😍
I'm propagating my string of everything ( hearts, fig, pearls and turtle) in water and they doing great. I use water and soil propagation both just in case one medium gives up.
Thanks for this tutorial. Do they have to be kept at a certain temp?
room temperature seems fine but a bit warmer helps with growth with this tropical plant
Do you keep misting with the cover on the propagation container until they already to transplant.
yup, on to keep moisture in and off to dry it out a bit. I just try to find a good balance so it doesn't rot
Thank you for the good tips on how to propergate a strings of hearts 🙏

Is this the same for string of turtles?
yeah, you can propagate them the same way. tho i don't think string of turtles are as hardy as SOH.
I'll try to propagate my String of Hearts! Thank you! (BRAZIL)
Why my string of heart plant leavs are falling off...the soil is not overwaterd or soggy and also it's in a bright place... please help me
that usually happens when its not getting enough water. do you water it until water comes out of the drainage holes? Give it a good watering and let it dry out and repeat! =) Good luck!
great video! what kind of soil do you recommend when there is enough roots to pot it? mix coco peat with potting soil?
i would do coco peat, perlite and some kind of fertilizer. i have a potting soil video if you want more guidance.
I grow mine in a mix of cactus mix with orchid bark and perlite.
@@Meskarune do you pot in terra cotta or plastic?
@@MountainsnVallies I have a plastic pot. My mix is so airy I think terra cotta would dry out too fast in my climate.
Best video - right to the point. Get ideas. Thank you
Should I open the bag daily? Or would it be best to keep it closed? Going to try it your way :)
Cool! I like to open it daily to look at it but you can get away with every three days. Just make sure it's not super wet! Good luck!
Well what about the water prop? You didn't show that
Does this method applicable to string of pearls and string of tears?
those are succulents, they can develop roots at the node so why not? try it!
Botanical Woman definitely will try! I received my plant in bad condition so I need to do something.
Thanks for the video 😊 🙌🌱
You are naturally pretty and thank you for the information do you think this method would work With other plants
Aww thx. hmmm peperomia prostrata is similiar, i feel like any creeping plant will do. even hoyas.
Hi,
I’m trying to propagate my new plant but it’s turning into autumn and winter so is it worth getting a growth light to help it?
yes! grow lights!
Today I got a new string of heart.when I see the plant string of heart first time in your vedio,I want get this plant.
congrats! hope you will grow to love it!
@@BotanicalWoman ok thank you dear🥰🥰🥰
Just the information I needed! Thanks
Yw! Happy it was helpful!=)
That huge string of hearts on the wall , is that real? PS I just got mine today very excited to propagate them. Thanks for this video loved it ❤️
the only plants i have that are fake are "cut flowers" because i don't buy them but i like the way they look.
What about sphagnum moss?
i don't like using sphagnum moss as you need to remove as much as it as possible before planting it up. in doing so you risk breaking the roots and if you don't remove enough, you can get root rot..to many things to worry about. i rather propagate in something that i can pot up easily
@@BotanicalWoman thank you so much for the reply, I have been waiting patiently for the mail man to bring me my new rooted cutting, i just want it to have the best start to life.
I love your channel and plants x
thank you! good luck! 💚
Very nice
I can see how a plant beginner would mess this up - you didn't say to water or how much to water the plant before placing it into the bag?
I am not sure how to provide a precise measure? do you have any ideas? keep it moist but not wet! thats my motto =)
Lindeza
For the propagating, what is the best place to leave the plant? In a light or a dark place? sun or shadow? Thanks for sharing! seems like a fun method!
In the shade is good. Gets some light but not direct light
Hi there! Does it matter if the SOH strand is from the younger part of the string? Is it best to work with a more mature part?
I haven't experiment with that, the only thing I can think of is when using smaller leaves they hold less moisture so may dry out? otherwise it should be fine
Could I propagate in perlite alone? Also thank you for the vid! Mine came in the mail with a node but it broke off immediately 😭 so I’m trying to salvage my little cutting
Yes you can! good luck!
I tried this maybe 4 days ago and then I checked today theres already that fuzzy white roots!
Thank you ... I will try ds method
Good Luck! =)
Yes, i am using sphagnum moss in the video, i have also used coco coir which i like as well. have fun!
nice plant
💚 Thank you!
Wow dear, love it.. love from new friend 🌺😍💕👌
thank you 😊
I tried this since I got some cutting from a friend... she said her cuttings didn’t root in water so I gave this method a try and 1 week in a have roots growing! Thankyou
yay! happy it worked!
Coco Pete?
coco peat aka coco coir
Oops I used peat moss
Thank you for the tips. I spent money on a variegated version and I wanna make sure it roots. Thanks to your video and tips I am able to do just that!
Thats awesome! So happy it worked for you!
Thank you so much for this information
I'm glad you found it helpful! Thanks for watching Kathleen 💚
