Beautiful woman beautiful voice, but cant stop feeling how it was obvious she was fighting her own demons of addiction here! She worked so hard from one show to another , that she felt she needed something to sustain her! Sad really but made a mark in the music industry today as “ lady blues”
Sarah, he was a great guy and everyone knows it. And he couldn't have not loved and admired Billie. But that was showbiz artifice, very common then, and still is, in country music for instance.
The way she sings the bridge, which starts at about 1:15 - "S'pose you want some-BO-dy... but you aiiiin't got no-BO-dy... you only got a gleeeeaaam in your eye..." UUGGGHHHH, my GOD! Her singing was the sexiest EVER
Many people today do not know how beautiful she was and how gorgeously gowned and coiffed she always was. Seeing her completes the experience as physically and facially she was so extraordinarily expressive.
@@eternallife31ify they were probably both as high as a kite. Louis did weed all the time. I wonder how people back than were able to fake being sober so well? Modern drug addicts should take their advice. I mean seriously imagine you can do drugs all the time and seem completely sober and not even act like you've been doing them.
My small opinion- she is the first soul singer meaning someone who touches something in your soul. I hate to rate people but she's been #1 on my list for atleast 20 years.
In 1959 I wrote a column in my college paper about Billie Holiday. I was 19. At the age of 16 I had asked for her new Columbia boxed L.P. set for my birthday present. My parents were mystified. She still absolutely knocks me out.
You have great taste. When I was15 I loved this music too, even though my friends thought it was too old and boring. That was 1975 and I am now 65. I can tell you this, you will never get tired of great music like this; it still moves me like it did when I was 15. Be thankful that you are wise beyond your years!
Memories of Billie Holiday, the greatest female Jazz vocalist of all, who died this day in 1959. When we talk of this remarkable woman, one has to admire her strength of character to have risen above all what she went through a child then to have gone on to become a legend in Jazz , before passing away aged 44
Almost every day, I pass the site of the old Hal Roach studio in Culver City, CA where this was filmed. Gives me a case of goose bumps and happy tears.! Should be a marker there.
Wow I've never seen a picture of her when she so young❗ I didn't know she was a beauty too. I wonder where the microphones are? I just heard a version of this on the radio where Louis Armstrong sings too. 🔸 Google identified it as: Artist: Billie Holiday duet with Louis Armstrong Album: The Blues Are Brewin' Released 1969 I was disappointed when they chopped the end off of this tune, I wonder if Louis was about to sing❓.
That is one of the most beautiful pieces I have ever read about Billie. ...." the Lord couldn't have made her more beautiful, and she couldn't have made music more fascinating, elegant and magical." Bravo. and thank you, I wish I had said those words.
I love this woman so much....she was so amazing...there will never be another...drugged out or sober and sad...she was undeniably beautiful and talented...
"When the wind from the willows blows across your pillow and tells you that sleeping is wrong... "the lilt in her voice and the way she sings the blues. She brings back the DAYS. Classic!
She was beautiful, talented, and changed the way blues was portrayed. Why...why Billie did you have to resort to drugs, you will forever be my favorite R.I.P "Lady Sings the Blues"
I remember when I was a little girl growing up in NY our neighbor always played her songs and I use to go over and listen to them with her, I was the only little white girl there but I felt so at home and I loved the music.
This video makes me cry. I have the blues brewin in my heart right now. As bad as I feel, Billie's angelic voice always makes everything better. R.I.P. Lady Day!
this woman had TRUE CLASS AND A REAL GIFT, shes AMAZING ! Even though she suffered so much through her personal life, her music wouldn't have been the same if not for those influences
I'm 24 and I'd never think I'd fall in love with someone while listening to this lady and satchmo... Some might say these guys have lost their influence but here's a tip... as long as love for music is in the air, there will always be someone to recatch the feeling and bring these stars back to life... thank you peagahariy for this lovely video
I love to look at the details when I see her on film. Her right arm is always held a little bit out, so the hand can beat the time (she's about 1/4 beat slow on everything, which makes that voice shimmer like diamonds on a moonlit sea) and her left brow lifts slightly while the right eye squints, her signal that she's giving us everything - the Lord couldn't have made her more beautiful, and she couldn't have made music more fascinating, elegant and magical.
when i feel sad or mad i listen to bessie smith when i feel rebellious i listen to janis joplin when i'm very happy i listen to aretha franklin but when i'm relaxed and calm i listen to billie. her voice is so calm and beautiful it relaxes me like no singer can. i love u lady day and there will never ever be another like you
What would america be without the blues?

People may think they were just singers, but as a matter of fact, they were fine actors too
Incredibly cool. They both had so much swagger.

I'm from the 21st century and she gives me a good impression
And she made the blues sound elegant and pretty too. Her phrasing was so concise and unique. Our first truly glamorous STAR.
The crazy part about all of this is she was high as a kite on stage and still made it look elegant

Louis Armstrong is such a cool gent!

Its prob just the kids doin it for homework
I'm among those who disliked this, as I'm not a scat fetishist like you and the others who enjoy audible defecation like this.
