  • This episode we rework and rebuild the BOWDECK and GUNNELS. We start with using the old bow deck cap and cut it to fit the newly raised bow. Then we use extra old boat fiberglass to rebuild the new gunnels. Join us for another fun BOAT BUILDING adventure!

    Really enjoying your build, I didn't want the episode to end! This is like the Game of Thrones of boat builds for me lol Thanks for sharing!

      Thank you, that means a lot to me. Im trying to keep the momentum and hopefully everyone can see that its not a perfect build but Im trying hard and most importantly. I am going to finish! Thanks again for watching.

    I used an 8ft tonneau cover to make my hard top for my center console. Been telling people for years that they're by far the best bang for you buck if you need a large piece of fiberglass. Great job...keep it up!

      This is a fantastic idea! I have a white fiberglass tonneau cover that we’re going to be using for our hardtop on our Grady! It was free and we don’t have to make a mold! Do you have pics or videos of how you did it? Thanks!🤙

    Awesome video brother! We have the same fiberglass tonneau cover that we’ve been wanting to turn into a hardtop for our boat! We got quoted 6k for one.😳
    Awesome job with the bow of the boat! And what a steal on that door! Market place is the best! Can’t wait for the next one! 🤙

      Thanks! Im trying to get better with the editing. Its not easy hey? Im also going go take one of my tonneau covers and make a hard top! Wont be for a month or so but Ill definately be modifying one. And Im going to try and make if foldable/collapsable with some hinging barckets. Its all in my head right now but I just bought tig welder to do some aluminum welding. So hopefully my welding skills can catch up to my hardtop ambitions? Hope your having fun on the water. And....btw, Im totally stealing your tail light epoxy hack. Great idea!

      @@RebuildProjects I think youre doing just fine with your editing! Youre right! It’s not! Not if you want to make something watchable at least.
      I’m no welder but I figured if I’m gonna try and do a hard top, might as well learn 🤷🏻‍♂️. Not sure where to start as far as welding goes so that’s a whole can of worms I’ll be getting myself into. You have an amazing ability to see it in your head and make it come to life. Really cool!
      We’re trying to get out as much as we can weather permitting. The weatherman is always lying though! 🤣
      Hopefully you won’t have the same woes as we did with the trailer lights! 🤣

      Thank you so much. I'm trying. I dont quite feel "good" at the editing part yet. BUT, I like doing it and if you/people are enjoying it, I'll try even harder to make them interesting. Thanks again for watching.

    You just got me thinking about all the cheap or free boats out there that could be useful as fiberglass panels for other boats or projects. Do you ever think of Victor Frankenstein when you’re creating your project. 😂 I say this with a positive vibe not negative!

      Hi, thanks for watching. YES. Im often trying to keep the FRANKENEFFECT in check. Lol. But Im not adverse to calling what Im doing Frankensteinish. Im on the side of Mary Shelley and feel that my creature has a heart and some soul behind the monster. Thanks for the positive vibes!

    That hardlid got you really far, I found a fiberglass canopy for a truck, it's pretty cheap. I'm imagining cutting it up and making a hardtop roof it has the pillars and top already I may have to slice it yo widen it but I would have never considered anything like that until I seen how you repurpose old fiberglass stuff that people are throwing away.

      Hi, Its fun to finally use my stash of hardlid/truckbed covers. When ever I see one up for grabs for cheap or free, I cant help myself, I grab them and put them in the backyard. I like your idea of the canopy! I think if you modify one just enough it can definately work and not look like it belongs on a truck. I may steal this one from you down the road? Im going to do sea trials first and if the boat can handle it (not too top heavy).... A hardtop may be in this boats future? Thanks again for watching.

    I must ask: Is the Marco Boat "Sojourn" built for the guys from The Lateral Line your inspiration here?

    • @RebuildProjects
      @RebuildProjects  7 месяцев назад

      Hi bradleymac5654, thanks for watching. I just looked up Marco Boats and Lateral Lines. Both look pretty amazing. I wish I could say that I was directly inspired by that boat. Its actually pretty fun how both our boats look kinda similiar/ish.
      Im kind of just winging my design as I go. Its been a bit of a proccess of buy something and figure out how to make it look good and fit on the small boat. Although I did spend some time in the begining thinking out the basic shape on Sketchup. That said, thanks for putting me onto these guys. Im going to catch up on thier videos. They look like good fellas.
      Cheers

      @@RebuildProjects - Right on and good on you for having this vision. I enjoy The Lateral Line channel, love the Sojourn build. Love it enough i rang Marco Boats in AUS to see if he would sell me the plans to build one here in the states. Love what you're doing, following the build and curious to see how it turns out. Any concerns with the added weight up front regarding performance?

    What's your thoughts/ideas/experiences of laminating over the gel coat? (as you have on the gunnels) I think it should be OK as it is the same product as the glass substrate, but 'everyone' says it's got to be ground off.

    • @RebuildProjects
      @RebuildProjects  7 месяцев назад +1

      Hi, thanks for watching. My general rule is to always grind down to the fiberglass. When it came to the gunnels, I took the risk of only sanding them with a 60 grit. Hard to show on camera but the sanding really put some tooth to them. That said, I do glass over them with 3 layers on the top and an additional 3 bottom layers. Then I take some trusty composite decking and thicken resin them to the full length under the gunnels. This will support my new gunnel cleats. But dont think the 3 top layers will delaminate from the gelcoat. I'll see as time goes by. Let you/everyone know if becomes an issue. I probably wouldn't do it though on a large surface, like the hull. Thanks again for comments!

      In my experience from seeing repairs made to old boats, fiberglass WILL NOT bond to gelcoat. He seemed to use really beefy glass over it so it may not be much of an issue as a form. I guarantee it won't stick to the painters tape he used lol

      UPDATE- I just added composite deck board material to the TOP of the gunnels as well. In the video im making now(coming in 2 weeks) I had to split and widen the gunnel caps to make the sides wider. Im putting in expanding foam into the hull sides. So to close up the new top gunnel gap Ive created, I am capping the gunnels with composite and glassing over with 2 layers of 1708 and 1 of chopmat. Stay tuned. The video will visualize it better!
