I've been fascinated by the DDR since my teenage years (00's). For a long time there hasn't been much material on youtube but this footage has been a staple of mine for years. It's amazing to see it now in HD! The NVA is definitely part of the appeal for enthusiasts of this small, strange, socialist state. You are doing a great service with your uploads and helping to keep this important episode of world history alive, Thank you!
Hmm - been born and raised there in the first 8 years of my life, I can't really support the notion that it was a 'strange' state. It was different, but not stranger than the other German state. It is just the 'look back' (that is, as always in history, the view of the victor) from our current position that feeds this sentiment. One can appreciate the current situation without "sacrificing" everything in Germany pre 1990. The history of the GDR is just as valid as German history as the history of the former FRG. But I digress. ;) If you compare the NVA and the Bundeswehr, the NVA was far more in line with the German military traditions (often superimposed by Soviet/socialist 'decoration') than the Bundeswehr. Be it uniforms, drill or even organisation/structure. Maybe the Bundeswehr comes around, at least with regard to ditch those ugly uniforms we're currently using on a daily basis. ^^
@@Chiron84 You're milage may vary. I grew up partly in the restricted border zone (my parternal grandparents lived there) and had quite a lot of 'western' relatives. There were hardships (my maternal grandmother wasn't allowed to visit her dieing sister on the other side of the border in the 1960th) and restrictions (opportunities with 'western relatives' were restricted regarding to education and employment), but people lived pretty normal lifes. Unless you were in open opposition. It was certainly no prison, but it was no free country either. There were strict boundaries, an oppressive security apparatus for those who had other vocal opinions, heavy-handed ideological wide scale influence on many things ... but also the normal joys of life and even things this German state handled better (health care, kindergardens, equality of men and women). Fortunately this episode of German history ended (how it ended is another matter). Being the person I am today, I would not have fit into that country. I'm happy that I live in an undivided home country, that I can express myself (but also with boundaries, even non-legal ones), that I surveillance is not that obvious and doesn't lead to strict consequences ... and that I can buy a lot of things, being a proper capitalist ;). But I also have to accept that Germany pre-1989 was not a dark hellhole as some quarters paint it today.
As an American curious about the Eastern Block, thanks for this. I assumed footage of things from East Germany, and other Eastern Block nations might be hard to find.
Thank you for the comment! Yes, the NVA maintained more traditional uniforms than the Bundeswehr! The NVA had a mix of German & Soviet drill movements! They used Soviet SKS rifles and the way they swing their arms is directly copied from the Russian drill manual, while the parade step is modeled on the Prussian regulations of 1906!
This video demonstrates that the NVA in DDR kept some of the Pressuian military traditions that were abolished by the Bundewehr in the BRD. You could argue, that in DDR some military traditions from the era of Preussia survived the defeat of Germany in the 2nd world war, but because of the process of de-nazification in BRD it did not. Of course I understand this is a over siplification, but the Bundeswehr became more of an anglo-american force in the face-off with Soviet led eastern european forces than anything else.
It has to do with the fact that West Germany wanted to build a new army that would represent a democratic country. The new army should therefore deliberately not simply be a continuation of the old army. In East Germany, on the other hand, they made it quite easy for themselves and more or less said: "The fascists who started the war and would like to go to war again are all in the West and are now American mercenaries. We, on the other hand, are the Good Germans and can therefore follow the German military tradition continue."
The Bundeswehr should incorporate some of the Imperial traditions into the drill, uniforms and music. Officers should carry swords and were riding boots. The Austrian Army does this and no one can call them a throwback to the Wehrmacht. The Parade schritt should be reintroduced as it is far smarter than the shuffling march employed by the Ehren Companie today.

Why did they use the Yorckscher Marsch when the officer marched past the troops for inspection? Were they still composing a "Präsentiermarsch" since they couldn't or didn't want to use the traditional "Präsentiermarsch Friedrich Wilhelm von 1813/Preußischer Präsentiermarsch"?
The repertoire of the NVA bands were limited on parade throughout its entire existence, and they always chose to perform traditional marches in between some DDR composed marches. The Yorckscher march was dedicated to Prussian General Field-Marshall Ludwig Yorck von Wartenburg.

@@MeracainMiracle The Soviet Union had faced over 200 Wehrmacht divisions in what was the largest land invasion in human history. The Western front had around 50-60 Wehrmacht divisions when the allies landed in 1944. Most of the lend lease that was given to the USSR had arrived in 1944 and 1945. By 1943, the USSR had already turned the tide of the war after the battle of Stalingrad and the Battle of Kursk. The Soviets were able to push back the Nazis but without the lend lease, it was unlikely that they would've been able to reach Berlin and finish them off.

Love it. Always very smart. I served in the British foot Guards, so I know smart drill when I see it. The Germans were always very smart and a pleasure to watch 👍👍👍👍👍👍🇩🇪
You don't have watch a minute of the video to see some non-prussian influence 0:53 They go from "order arms" straight to "present arms" without a "shoulder arms" in between. I also don't know about the way they stand at ease with both legs together and one knee forward instead of on the same level but a shoulder width apart.
The NVA of course had some Soviet influence, just like the Bundeswehr had some American influence, and was very Americanized when it was first founded in 1955. You can notice some soviet elements such as the clenched fists (instead of open) as in German tradition and the way they swing their arms up to the armpit, rather than at the waist level. The NVA also used Soviet style medals and weapons. Apart from that, everything else corresponded correctly to Prussian military tradition. The Musikkorp is the most traditional element of the NVA and is the best example of Prussian tradition. At 4:09 the Commander of the Honor Company yells" Im Gleichschritt" which is the formal marching step used by the Prussian Army and is also the official marching step of the Bundeswehr! So there is in fact a shared tradition between both armies when it comes to the Gleichschritt! As the Musikkorps begins to march, the Spielleute (which consists of snare drums and fifes) performs the Parademarsch der Spielleute. At 5:19, the drum major signals to the Spielleute to begin performing the Prussian Lockmarsch. This march was traditionally used by every German Army (including the Bundeswehr) to prepare the military musicians for performing the next music piece. At 5:20 they begin performing the Prussian Lockmarsch to prepare themselves for the Scwhenk, which is a 90 degree turn. At the command of the drum major, they execute the Scwhenk and begin performing the march while maintaining the traditional Prussian marching tempo of 114 beats per minute.
@@MaximusandHistoryDepending on the local circumstances the Bundeswehr Musikkorps also still make the same movements: ruclips.net/video/bevX0U_RZJU/видео.htmlsi=nljyijiG2-GLlNhC Minus the goose step of course
You'd be correct, the drum major in the film (Gerhard Kienow) served in the Luftwaffe if I remember correctly. The NVA and the Bundeswehr both used Wehermacht veterans to train the new armies.
The Soviet Union had enough brains and class to let save old manly Prussian traditions in German army even after greatest catastrophe Prussian militarism caused to Soviet people (25 millions of dead, mostly civilians, 4x more than Holocaust), while the West destroyed those traditions and now fckued up Germany overall with it's SJW nonsense

It is utterly shocking how ironic it is that the Soviet army of East Germany was more appreciative of Prussian tradition in comparison to modern liberal Germany

Yea but those helmets are atrocious. Looks like they're wearing cooking woks on their heads!
Totalitarian regimes share a lot in common. What did you expect? The difference between the Nazis and the Communists is that the Nazis wouldn't hesitate to murder you if they didn't like your ancestry while the Communists wouldn't hesitate to murder you if they decided it would improve Humanity.
Not surprising it was the Prussians who organised the original Russian army hundreds of years before!
The NVA military parades and military marches are definitely underrated and the best in my opinion.

But I digress. ;)
If you compare the NVA and the Bundeswehr, the NVA was far more in line with the German military traditions (often superimposed by Soviet/socialist 'decoration') than the Bundeswehr. Be it uniforms, drill or even organisation/structure. Maybe the Bundeswehr comes around, at least with regard to ditch those ugly uniforms we're currently using on a daily basis. ^^
Personally, I've never seen the appeal in a murdering regime that basically turned part of my country into a prison.
