That principle applies to the American Revolution, World War I, World War II, the Korean War, yes, the Vietnam "conflict", the War of 1812…. ANY WAR.
When men go to war, their wives live in fear and that is the sacrifice that WIVES make for their country. THAT is the sacrifice THEY make and we should recognize it and honor them for it.

For example, Sam Shephard was exonerated in the 1960s, but his so was still fighting for him to get a pardon till he died in the 2000s. A Pardon is usually done for two reason, one the person is believed to be totally innocent, two they are believed to be treated unfairly by something like giving too much time for a small crime. A pardon has zero to do with agreeing you are guilty. Most people have no idea they are even getting pardoned. Also, and exoneration does not mean you are innocent. It simply means you won your freedom.

Every soldier in modern militaries is taught military law, but it doesn't take a genius or a lawyer to know that killing prisoners, desecrating corpses or torturing civilians are all illegal. Modern military also stress that every soldier's duty is to disobey illegal orders.
This. And also to add that rules of engagement are reiterated multiple times prior to and during deployments. They made sure we knew.
