    Pouring molten aluminum into liquid nitrogen and dry ice are my most requested videos, so today you finally get to see what happens!
    Thanks to FLIR for sending me a real thermal camera to use in my videos, heres the camera I used bit.ly/FLIRONE.

    The chim or hum of the tin on the dry ice is due to the moment of the molecules in the dry ice. The metal is a solid and will not become any more solid then the state it's in the atoms are interlocked perfectly. The dry ice however is fluctuating between a solid and a gas (all but missing the liquid stage) this results in the atoms moving so fast under a pressure (the tin) it begins to resonate resulting in the sound.
    Only a few years late on this but just for those who wanted to know.
    This will happen with any solid material put on dry ice with pressure. We do the same thing between petri dishes in the lab I work in when we get a shipment that contains dry ice.

    • @Dr.Fluffles
      @Dr.Fluffles 8 лет назад +9

      +Freeze Dried Girolles It's called twinning. It can happen with pure rods when you bend them, also. The crystal structure is such that it will actually mirror itself when put under stress, which also makes it harden in the area of effect.

    • @davidalbro2009
      @davidalbro2009 8 лет назад +6

      +Freeze Dried Girolles It also explains the phrase "tin ear" or "tinnitus" which I had wondered about until I watched this video. We certainly sometimes get a ringing in our ear that sounds just like that.

      In Germany we call that "tin cry" and "tin pest". It happens, because the crystal layering is changing, when Tin gets to cold, below 13°C. He maybe saw this, as the lower part of his tin block turned grey instead of silver-white.

    Ah, this is a fun one I just recently explored. The reason the molten Aluminum slides off of the surface of the ice is due to what is called the Leidenfrost Effect. Effectively, the dry ice is creating a buffer of gas between it's solid state and the liquid Aluminum, allowing the metal to float right off of it. And it also explains the volcano effect, where the gas is pushing its way through the molten metal. You can see the same effect if you heat up a pot and drop water droplets into it. The reason they don't instantly vaporize, is due to this same effect. You can actually see the same effect when he pours the liquid nitrogen onto the molten aluminum, how the liquid nitrogen floats around on the surface. Pretty neat stuff.

    Actually when u think about it, the reaction from liquid nitrogen and molten aluminum is almost like when oil meets water. They always have to be separate, the only difference is the type of matter and how dry ice and molten aluminum has a more explosive and vigorous reaction than oil and water.

    • @GameMechanic1
      @GameMechanic1 8 лет назад +20

      +GReaperEx Temperature has a lot less to do with the dangers of liquid nitrogen. It has a lot more to do with accidental spillage - which everyone is capable of regardless of how awesome they think they are. The liquid nitrogen is way less viscous than molten metal, so it is much easier to accidentally get places you didn't intend it to. If you're trying to say that he needs to be more safe with molten aluminum too, I wouldn't disagree, but I wouldn't agree if you're trying to imply that molten aluminum is more dangerous simply because its temperature differential from ambient is greater than that of liquid nitrogen.

      +LOK Chu Perhaps because of the molten aluminium, but if he gets liquid nitrogen on his hand it doesn't really matter. It will boil and provide a protective layer of CO2 but his hand will be okay. However, if he has some kind of protective glove he could spill some liquid nitrogen on his arm which would flow into the glove, and that would be very bad...
