I fell head over heels for Cholo. Back then (late 50s-late 60s) homies / gangsters were “Vatos y Pachucos, later Cholos”. The guys always had the clothes sharply pressed and creased with their Pendleton’s draped over their fore arms and the girls were called “Rucas” with their teased up hair sprayed hair and tight short skirts. I still remember those thighs. I remember riding my bike from La Medina Projects in East LA on Sunday nights to go look at the low rider car clubs cruising Whittier Blvd in East LA, Later we moved to Santa Ana and it was downtown 4th street where all the low riders would gather and cruise on Sunday night when all the old downtown stores were closed. In the 7th grade a white guy named Roger but everyone called him “Fish” (his face looked like a fish) that was all pachuco started F Troop originally there were a half dozen jr. high school kids (67’-68’ Santa Ana) Shit the music was great! Today blacks are credited for the “homie gangster” thing, but it was the Mexicans in east LA and Pacoima that were the original “homie gangsters” back then blacks had not even ventured there
I feel it but the black panthers were active during the 1960s. So basically we both started completely different movements, the Latinos a bit earlier, as a way to show our pride in our heritage and to help better our community despite the oppression as well as to create our own culture as Latino Americans and African Americans . I personally think Latinos and blacks are totally bad ass and we have always been there for each other as each group has fought for our own identity in white America. Growing up to doo wop back in the day the Italians/ blacks/ other white groups did so much good doo wop but it seemed that Chicano /west coast doo wop was under rated and didnt get the respect it deserved on the east coast.
