Hello on the SHB when using the cd cases I think you need to brake a little bit of the bottom off on each side maybe a 1/6” - 1/4” so it makes a little hole for them to be able to enter . Also something else that works is ( dry unsented ) swiffer sheets put on the top of the frames BUT you need lay them on the side on the box an set the box on the edge of them an trap the sheets so the bees can not drag the sheets down thru the frames . Use maybe a 1/2 sheet between the two brood boxes or between the brood box an a super box . They work great . Would maybe need to be changed out every week or every two weeks. Keep your video’s coming when possible. Thanks
G'day from Texas! Just came across your channel. We have a couple of hives and are ramping things up for the season & came looking for ways to avoid the little buggers getting out of control. Would love to see an update, but either way I'll be watching the rest of your stuff - you're a hoot. :D
hey Mark, nice video series so far. Not sure what beetles they are running around, but they aren't Small Hive Beetle. SHB are about the same size as a ladybug but black with antennae that end in a little ball.
lol yep cassett tapes were before CD,s , the whipper snappers today wouldn't know about the tapes we had for music, be listening to your favorite song then the tape gets chewed up in the recorder , now that sucked .
The hive beetles you have seem a little different than the ones I sometimes see in my hive. Mine are larger, more round, and darker in color. I wonder if the beetles are different in California than they are in Australia. Anyway, good luck with the CD cases. I haven't used them but I hope they work for you.
Hey Mark, Just found this one. Your SHB are actually something else! If they are mini cockroaches then they are quite different to the pesky things we have, which are a native cockroach that love beehive hotels. Its got so bad here now (Oct 2021) that I have to do something about them!
Hive beetles lay their eggs in the hive. The larva drops out of the hive and burrows into the soil to pupate and emerges to fly back up into the hive. There are companies that sell nematodes designed specifically for controlling hive beetle. They are probably a little expensive for commercial keepers to use unless he had a way to propagate his own nematodes. These little critters live in the ground and eat hive beetle pupa.
You could put some Borax in your CD holders. It kills hive beetles too, really well. Lot of Americans put it on the borrow board that slide in and out. , it also helps with mites.
You could use a straw as an eye dropper. Just dip the straw in the oil jar then close the end of the straw with your thumb. Then release your thumb to release the oil.
The SHB will find its way to your hives and fly right in. Most people that use those CD Case's paint them black, the SHB likes the dark. The hive SHB lays their eggs in your honey suppers then they hatch out looking like large larva and slime the hive as they eat they honey and make their way out of the hive. When they leave the hive they burry them self in soft soil and pupate into a SHB. If they hive slimed to much the bees will leave, leaving a smelly mess. Hope the oil trick works on them.
The Bush Bee Man you guys are really good at this and you are pretty natural on the camera. This just makes bees much more interesting. Never really tought of them this way before. And sorry if my sentences sound weird. Forgive me in from finland :D
You’re English is better then mine! Thank you for your kind words 😊 it’s really made my day. I’m not sure how we get more subscribers but we’re going to keep making these videos
Yes we can get it here on ebay but is expensive for small amounts , some people here are useing lime powder instead and it seems to work fine. swiffer sheets are expensive here to and hard to find so chux cloth is our alternative , probably not as good but it works catching them.
6:58 lets have a silent moment for these heroic bees who tried to stop you from putting the hive back on it's base

You could use (Swiffer Dusters sheet) to catch hive beetles, they get traps in it and the bee don’t get trapped. It works pretty good.
not available down under and outrageously expensive to freight here from USA

Are you kidding me? You are older than me and i remember 8 track tapes. That's serious old school!

I use cooking oil and vinegar- the vinegar really brings them in to the trap and the oil finishes them.
Good idea!

Did you ever go back and check on the CD cases? Just wondering how this worked for you?
Always so cheerful 💛

Oh boy, CDs are old school. I feel so old! haha

Did it work?
For mites try putting powder sugar on top of the hives and into the frames, the bee clean out the hive and the mites fall to the bottom boards
They don’t have varroa in Aus
Just wondering how this very cool and professional channel has so few subs :(
Were slowly getting but hopefully we’ll get a few more 😊 thank you so much for watching!
The Bush Bee Man found you guys just today and i have watched from this episode to bit over ep 60 :D
Wow! Nice work! I’m glad you’re enjoying it as much as we are making it.

Gotta update those webpage episodes its currently at episode 11 on the webpage when youre almost at 40!!
Putting a tray under each leg and filling with oil stops unwanted pests from crawling up in the first place 💁♀️🐝
“Leg” you mean the legs of the stands where one keeps the bees on? Thanks for replying
You still haven't washed your suit :D
What are those hives sitting on? And why?
Vegemite is a good bait for hive beetle.
Food grade Diatomaceous Earth work great with less mess than cooking oil.

@@fishmut i got a 15kg bag DE from local stockfeed supplier
I didn't see any shb in your video and I would be surprised if they are a problem in your area. They need wet soil to reproduce.
You haven't painted your boxes? I thought the sun will destroy that poly material.
I thought you needed more than just cooking oil in the traps

This time I'll use woodprix instructions to make it by myself.
Theyre baby cockroaches
