      It has. Sweden uses it.
Edit: it's just that its always been done on a much larger scale before and it has always been hugely expensive (took years before they saw a return). Their system was only suitable in a developed country willing to do a costly long term investment.
Edit 2: now they import trash from Norway to be able to feed the system. As a result of the system they not only have some of the best water supply in the world but also only 1% of the nations trash ends up in landfills.

    • @roscoe91iv
      @roscoe91iv 10 лет назад +5

It has. I work for a company that builds waste water treatment plants. Every city in the US over about 1500 people has one, though most are outdated and need upgrading to produce electricity. The EPA requires that all effluent, I.e. flow leaving the plant be clean enough to drink so that it doesn't contaminate water downstream. This is just a scaled down version that is much cheaper to produce so poor people in third world countries can afford it

    • @jzargobaratheon6746

it's not new. Just that there's no machine that can do all those task in one. Water treatment plant sells sludge to company that is probably make some good uses out of it. Clean water usually use to water grass at golf course, etc. A particular plant near my house just dump all the output (clean) water into the river.

I hate to be a pessimist but I'd like to see the chemical composition of the waste ash before investing in a process like this. Developers often take on biomass combustion processes without accurately accounting for the viability of the waste ash as a fertilizer. Since it derives from human excrement I'd imagine the POP and M^n+ concentrations to be too high to directly apply to soil when concentrated to this extent. If this is the case then operator/operating company will have a nasty surprise when they realise their ash is a costly by product, rather than a saleable asset.

What you need in developing countries is better property rights protection. As long as there is the threat of the government nationalizing your business (in other words, stealing it from you), there is a huge disincentive for entrepreneurs to create or fund advanced infrastructure, including the kind seen in this video. Until the problem of government predation is solved, third world countries will continue to have the problems they do today. Technology won't solve this problem -- holding the government accountable for its actions will.

  • @elmonarcoful

In Belgium (where I live) they already do this. Our tap water is recycled water, I don't see the problem with this if its done right. If we didn't do this we would've run out of clean water a long time ago because people here spend it like crazy...
Like they say "You don't know what you have until you've lost it".
They use water rather irresponsibly here because they take it for granted.
I'm Colombian so no, I don't take it for granted.
Thank God for smart people like this that can save us from ourselves.

What does the operator do when the sludge dessicator clogs? How long do the pipe components last with high dissolved solids and natural acids from the vapors that come off of the sludge? More importantly, how does the sludge arrive at this package plant? What about the liquid effluent? What about dioxins created during the incineration process related to plastics in the sludge supply?

Just one question about it. So the water coming out is distillated right?
Though its still a lot better than no water at all but isn't it unhealthy to drink it over longer time?
Or is it enriched with electrolytes?

input: some fuel to get it started + poop
output: distilled water + ash + electricity.
profit is gonna depend on initial cost to build the system, employee wages, maintenance costs, and cost of start-up fuel.
it should work pretty well if the system produces more energy from the poop than the energy required to dry it up and burn it.
