I love how the show runs you through all the emotions in one episode. You never hate Flint more than when he kills Gates while also feeling sorry for him in the same moment as he breaks down over doing it. Flint is such an incredibly complex character, easily my favorite character of all time. He will take you on a ride.
Historical tidbit -- the Urca de Lima was a real Spanish treasure galleon that shipwrecked off the coast of Florida in 1715.

Absolutely I agree with you about Flint. I was pissed he killed Gates but also knew he was heartbroken to do so. I love characters like that!
I love history, so I'm going to look more into that!

Gates is definitely a big loss for the show, in my book. Mark Ryan put so much into the role and created such a great character, he is missed throughout the rest of the series. You can't have a war though and not lose people, but his loss is top 3.
Vane's arc is just getting rolling. He has so many ups and downs, just when you think he's beaten he somehow always turns the tables on you. You asked about his endgame though, at this point I don't think it's really clear to him either except that for the moment he's tired of being subject to other people's will, chiefly represented by Eleanor's rule over the island. At the end of the episode he's finally free of it, but he still has some more trials in store before he finally finds a higher purpose.
I've enjoyed this. Can't wait to see your reactions to season 2 as the show just keeps getting better.

I wonder what Eleanor meant by she had to take care of her father!
And get used to mid-show shockers, they do it a lot moving forward and you can barely catch your breath! RIP Mr. Gates.

Thanks for the warning ;) I took Eleanor's statement to mean either kill him (but would she really? I don't think so) or pay him off/find some loop hole to get rid of his power type of thing.
