Full watch-a-long reactions found here: bit.ly/3fPwdXS
I love the scene when man o war is opening cannons, Flint already knew what will follow
Heads up for next season and the seasons to come, Dufresne is played by a different actor as sadly the original actor was diagnosed with cancer and passed away a few years ago.
Yeah, he passed away from brain cancer shortly after season 1 concluded filming. Dufresne’s unexpectedly shorn, seemingly sloppy haircut in episode 7 was due to the actor having undergone brain surgery.
Yeah it's also a shame, because I really preferred the first actor to the one they got after him. The recast actor does a decent job, but there's something about this one's performance that feels more natural. He's becomes tough because he needs to be but he still has that nervous bookkeeper side to him. The second actor's performance felt a bit too "edgy", I guess.
@@ksbsnowowl3569 He held on a fair bit longer than the end of season one's filming, didn't he? He passed away in 2016, by which point 3 seasons were out. He likely stepped down from the role due to the toll of his illness. Either way, incredibly tragic. He was a great actor.
It's so good to see another reaction channel appreaciating black sails!
"There are no legacies in this life, no monuments, no history, just the water. It pays us, and then it claims us, swallows us whole, as if we've never been here at all."
-Gates
The dialogue in this show is perfect.
And the "I will do great violence against that day" speech.
Also, "fire". 😂
This bit from Gates always makes me think of Flints bit next season about the Flint name. The whole sea taking it all back without a trace. It’s fantastic.
Especially jack's stories monologue
Queue "bones in the ocean" by the longest johns :D
“Mr. Gates heart has given out” is a legit hilarious line 😂
You can really see that Gates and Flint were actually friends in their talk at night over wine. This and Flint‘s acting make the scene where he kills Gates hit so hard, Flint‘s a broken man that doesn’t stop at anything to achieve his long term goal, he’s just a brilliant character and this is a great intro season.
I really hate how many comments there always are like „this is the most boring season“ or „season 1 starts slow it gets so much better“. Slow pace /=/ bad. You don’t have to put this down so much to hype the rest up. A good buildup is always needed, otherwise the payoff wouldn’t hit as hard as it does. Just because this is more uneventful than the rest of the show doesn’t mean that it’s not good, on the contrary it’s still a brilliant season, and I‘m so glad these two are enjoying it so much already.
I think if the show was really fast paced from the beginning I don’t think it would’ve been as good tbh. I love that writers took their time to flesh out the characters and the world.
@@bushidoblvck_ exactly why I always love shows with a slower beginning way more. The better the buildup is the better the payoff for the big moments is gonna be, and as far as buildup goes this show is up there
my thoughts exactly. Honestly after watching this season repeatedly I ended up feeling Season 1 was one of my favorites, probably tied with season 4. Season 3 being my favorite
Agreed. I don't even like to compare the seasons tbh. Black Sails is an epic, 38 chapter story. I would harken a guess that any great tale starts relatively "slow", as it should.
Just saw this and I feel like my comment is really going to irritate you...and to be clear....I feel the way I feel but I do agree in general with you and I do sincerely think that even these first 8 episodes with the introduction to the time period, charters, locations, lifestyle etc....I do think that is all amazingly and expertly done. So I am not trying to take away from how awesome this whole season was.
Charles Vane, Benjamin Hornigold, Jack Rackham, Anne Bonny, and others not yet in the show are real pirates. The show does a generally solid job of keeping true to their characters as well as building a fictionalised story around them. Kinda like Vikings or The Last Kingdom does as well.
yeah, Charles Vane had a reputation for being very violent and ruthless. Well portrayed.
Not really. While vane is a portrayed as somewhat of a prick, he is never shown to be truly sadistic, and all of his choices had valid reasons behind them. The real Vane was in fact a sadistic psychopath, who chose violence and pain over reason.
Rackham in real life never showed near the loyalty to either vane or Anne. He took vane's command, and hid while Anne was captured.
Hornigold was far more charismatic, and far less feeble than portrayed in the show. And played a far larger part in the founding of the republic than what the show portrays. The only thing they really got right was him being a turncoat.
The only character they really got accurate is the next villain they bring in. They did a perfect job with him.
Don't get me wrong I understand that it's meant for entertainment, and they did so beautifully, but as far as historical accuracy, it subpar to say the least.
@@brandonsherman8173 thank you - saves me the trouble of writing this :)
The great Black Sails “did he fall or was he pushed” debate is eternal. There are great arguments for both sides. I LOVE Flint so much. I can’t wait for next season to blow your minds.
Honestly this channel looks pretty dry after the Falcon Winter Soldier Series got finished!
Waiting for LOKI series!
@@IronMan-jj2fd they’re currently reacting to two of the greatest tv shows ever made, HOW is it dry? I wish they were doing more episodes a week, but the ones they’re doing are fantastic
@@Drummer4President by dry, I meant the views are a lot less.
@@IronMan-jj2fd well then people are just missing out. It’s always surprised me how many people haven’t seen BoB or Black Sails
@@Drummer4President "BoB or Black Sails" even I had never heard of it!
I just want to say I'm really happy to see you two watching and enjoying Black Sails. It's always a treat to see people reacting to a show I love. Looking at your channel, I realize these videos don't do as well as your usual reactions but I hope you're able to continue watching to the end of the show. It gets better and better from here on out.
Yes, totally agree! The Black Sails fandom isn’t the biggest but we are VERY supportive of any reaction channels and LOVE getting new fans! Most people who put the time in to watch the whole show it becomes a favorite if not their top favorite show. Just love it.
That instrument is a hurdy-gurdy. It is cool! The composer for the show uploaded some videos to his channel. Good stuff!
Bear McCreary for anyone interested. Got a lot of good videos.
Best show! It only gets better from here!!
Lol, yeah, you still can't be sure about Billy...Flint is fascinating, it's not status and not ego... it's a mission...And Yes, he was sorry. That was 100% really hard for Flint, he truly liked Gates. He, like you will notice, has to make hard, tragic choices sometimes, as do all the other pirates, but it doesn't mean he doesn't feel bad.
Show gets better and better. Season 2 is *chef'skiss* perfection. You'll get Flint's back story and what motivates him. It's a fascinating story to watch.
Flint is just getting started. He is the scariest character I have ever seen.
You ain’t seen nothing yet. I don’t think I can possibly praise this show enough. It surpasses any other for me. Season 2, 3 and 4 are truly god tier television.
Could not agree more.
yeh man, lol, can't wait till we get to the "I've got a long fucking memory" scene, or the key scene, you know, the second one.
but out of curiosity, how did you generally like the ending? did it feel rushed to you?
@@Setep2k I think it was limited by only having 4 seasons and perhaps could have benefited from another 1 or even maybe just 3-4 extra episodes. But they wrapped up everyone’s arks for me in a satisfying way and brought closure to the show generally in a more pleasing way than most shows ever do.
@@jackbrooking4754 I would have answered the same way... I love the shows that end just right! "Turn: Washington's Spies" was AMAZING too!
It never gets away from it's self it stayed on task and true to its story and ended when it was suppose to
RIP Mr. Gates. He was kind of my favorite character of the show. The way he managed Flint, his relationship with Billy, such a good quartermaster and good man.
"YOU SOUND LIKE YOU'RE FROM LONDON!" I dunno what's better, the fact that I get to rewatch S1 finale with you two or that you're dropping Forgetting Sarah Marshal quotes!
Hope you guys are doing great!!! Thank you for all the amazing content and the some of the best reactions! You guys rock! Can’t wait for you guys to start season 2!
That speech Max gave Eleanor gave me goosebumps.
You guys should watch the behind the scenes interview. The actor for Charles Vane, Zach McGowan's personality is totally opposite of brooding and serious Charles Vane. Zach is a hippy surfer dude, its amazing how he transformed into the role.
He looks like one, though, and is as dirty as one.
Omg, I can see it
I look forward to this every week from the UK!
I love this episode so much, thank you guys for reacting to Black sails!
SO EXCITED every video you drop for Black Sails as it gets better every single one from here on out!!!! My favorite show of all time, fricken masterpiece. Love your enthusiasm, and hold onto your hats matey.
Alright, the pieces are in place. Now the show begins!
So true, season one was the perfect prologue!
I love how Nikki sees everything as black and white with Flint while Steven recognizes the giant gray area he lives within
Yes Vane is loved but not so much because he is a heartthrob but more because he is like the Jaime Lanister of Black Sails
He lacks the charisma to be the Jamie Lannister of Black Sails. And the path to redemption.
@@QuinlanLJ thats because he is Charles Vane not Jaime Lannister. I was putting it in a way she could better understand why he is a beloved character of the series. I probably shouldn't have replied to this irrelevant comment and won't from now on cus u add nothing to the convo. later dude
@@QuinlanLJ - You realize there are numerous different types of charisma, right? Vane has his OWN in spades and is a far better character than Jaime and I LOVE Jaime. Vane has the bad boy, yet a good man, charisma. The end.
I like Charles Vane character a lot. When he came out the grave that moment made him legendary.
Sooooo much GREAT story coming up... You guys are in for a ride. To me, this is where the show truly begins. Season 1 was just the introduction.
I think this is up there with Breaking Bad quality. It's a shame not many people saw it.
I believe if it was on HBO it would be so much more popular
Always said Black Sails > GoT
@@SolracJ88 How? Lol
@@eldaddyme The writing is so far above Game of Thrones (beyond season 3) that it's not even funny. Game of Thrones is a very visually appealing show, though.
@@eldaddyme in most ways
Awesome finale, I think this was the episode that truly got me hooked years ago. And it's just going to get better from here.
You saying "This dude's ego" about Flint's motives really made me laugh. I can't wait until you guys get to the part where everything about Flint finally clicks. He really did love Gates and didn't want to kill him, it's just that Flint is after something much bigger and more important.
The best thing about this show is that it keeps getting better and better through out the seasons.
I’m glad you’re watching this show. It stays excellent to the final episode of the final season and there’ll be more shocking moments to come…
Yes charles vane was a real person, and you should look at his pictures on wikipedia because its absolutely HILARIOUS to compare them to the show version of Vane.
Great to see you enjoy this so much, wait for season 2, you are in for a treat. SO much is gonna be explained. :)
Charles vane wasn't the only one that was actually based on a real pirate, many on the show were. It's cool to compare their tv version vs the real pirates
Anne Bonny was also a real person
Nikki: "but did you die?" OMG! Rollin'
the seasons only get bigger and better!!!
Can't wait to watch your reaction to Black Sails. Right now I'm going through your reactions to Vikings. I think it's funny how Nikki went from being upset about the violence in Game of Thrones but is cheering it here. Isn't it strange how movies can make us cheer behavior that we would otherwise abhor.
I'm on Season 2 of Vikings. Loving your analysis and seeing the show from your eyes. I usually watch these shows by myself because my wife doesn't like violence. It's great to relive this awesome show with you folks.
Oh darling Nikki, yes the majority of the female fan base is madly in love with Charles Vane BUT I will say that it develops over the next season A LOT. I didn’t see it at first as much either (except loved the voice and I about fell out of my chair at the full frontal last episode! Shook!). He has a great character arc and so much upcoming awesomeness the next ten episodes he grows on ya.
Of course I think Silver is an absolute babe too, and Billy’s biceps have their own fan club in the community! A lot of beautiful people in the private world :)
Loved that shitty fake nasal voice he does? The worst part of the show and practically ruins the character.
Billy's biceps have their own area code!!!
spoiler alert:
don't you think his development and actions at points are a bit unrealistic? while I loved the visuals I think that vane's attack on charles town seemed a bit questionable, same as the hangman scene. can't see him ever giving that much of a fuck about flint or flints cause.
@@Setep2k I don't think it's about flints cause so much as maintaining civilisations fear of pirates. And Vane is as true a pirate as they come.
guess I'm in the minority then. Billy Bones or Anne Bonny on the other hand... ;) ♥
the instrument you asked about is a Hurdy Gurdy it is a strange looking instrument that is cranked with a handle but makes a great sound.
Can't wait to see them learn all about flint's motivations
You think you know Flint but you have no idea...yet. I can't wait for Season 2 to get going. Let's Goooo!
Omg the second season though!!! Enjoy it you two!
Admiral Lord Nelson Britain's greatest sailor suffered from sea sickness all his time at sea. He never got his sea legs lol
Honestly I can’t wait for them to see the rest of Silver’s character arc and how his relationship with Flint changes overtime. Their dynamic is the backbone of this show.
Love the reactions! This show is a masterpiece😍🔥
Speaking as a straight dude, I always considered Luke Arnold (John Silver) as the shows designated 'heartthrob '.
_The Ethics of Piracy_ by Cpt. J. Flint, lover of books.
To answer your Charles Wayne question: yes, yes we do.
Rare show that gets better every season! ♥
Answer to Nikki: in my opinion, Charles Vane is not set up to be a heart-throb at all. That is all I can tell you at this point. Btw, as I understood it when I watched the show, the 'big dude' was his former owner. I think what clicked in Vane's head, was seeing the little kid with the same branding as he himself has. It just set him from 'lets do this guys' to 'eff you, I'm going to help these guys get the hell outta here'.... And get a crew in the proces :)
Ahhh, you guys don't even know where this show is gonna go and just how far Flint is willing to take things!
Season 1 is just a warm up!
A minor historical note, but the Spainish treasure galleons typically were armed with the heaviest cannons that they could get their hands on that wouldn't cause them to sink outright. So while they'd wallow at a couple knots across the Atlantic, in pitched battle they'd be a looming fortress. Flint wanted the 12-pounders to be able to have a chance in an ambush, because otherwise they'd have to deal with return fire from 24, 32, and 42-pounders, which would not end well at all for our protagonists... as we just saw.
Silver is who littlefinger shouldve been in game of thrones if they followed books
Good point yea. GRRM said Baelish was someone that could get out of any situations with words and he was someone everybody liked, that is why he was so dangerous and that is why he holds the position he has. I think they painted certain characters on the show closer to the actors they casted. And since Aiden Gillen is so good at playing devious characters, that's how they forged show Baelish. On the show, the first time you see him you're like "I don't trust that dude!". But book Bealish is completely different.
@@johnnyskinwalker4095 before 2011 when he was cast as Baelish, Aidan was most well known for Stuart in Queer as Folk & Carcetti in The Wire, neither were particularly “devious.” I think he got a bit typecast in that role because of GOT.
With Flint, just a reminder about this show, one action doesn't necessarily mean he or SHE did the other action
Love this show!! :) Super excited that you’re at season 2 now.
I was shocked to see Flint kill Gates. I thought he was his right hand man and he would have lasted seasons. Great character. But this showed to me at this point on that was going to be a different show. And I don't blame Flint at all. Gates was damn petty, he took things personal instead of focusing on the mission. They are pirates, they want a treasure, focus on getting that treasure.
Vane is a freaking badass
I don't know why people get upset with Flint in this episode. Clearly Gates' heart just gave out. ;-)
The "Urca de Lima" was a real Spanish treasure galleon that shipwrecked off the coast of Florida in 1715. I love how the show mixes in history with their plots.
Vane is the classic "vegeta" character - a bad guy so cool you cant help but like them
Vane (and the actor who plays him) is not my typical type, but I definitely found myself attracted to him in this. Also, I think that one scene Nikki referenced three or four times left most people going: 😳🙊🙈
Anna catching max , and sensing someone is watching her, classic you could feel the tension between the two.
The Flint character arc is just beginning. Wait until y'all get to where his backstory is revealed.
Toby Stephens is by far the most attractive man in the show for me. I've been in love with him since he played Rochester in Jane Eyre. 😍
@@mikew4022 lol you think I don't know that? 😂 ... fassbender played him in the 2011 movie version. You think that's the only Adaptation of Jane Eyre? there are many many more. Toby played him in the 2006 Bbc adaptation, which is 4 hours long and a million times better than the 2011 version. Also far more better known and critically acclaimed. People LOVE that version. It's also toby's most famous role ( next to Flint) and basically the main reason why I watched Black Sails in the first place. (The one adaptation with timothy dalton as rochester is also really good). Toby is by far the best Rochester though.
Your faces watching this episode hehe!! Perfect reactions. How fun is this show! and your only at the beginning. . . . . .
Charles, Jack and Bonnie were all real. PS, I love Max (besides that being my name) “Sand changes things, today you are in charge and have everything you want. Let’s see what tomorrow brings.” 🤣
Plugging the Black Sails podcast Fathoms Deep! They really dive into themes and character motivations and there are no spoilers for later episodes if you listen from the begining! Listening to it made me love the show even more!
The instrument is called a hurdigurdi
Ah yes, Dufresne! Power can really spread like wildfire sometimes unless you have people to help stomp it out.
And now the real black sails starts. S2 on is just perfectt storytelling
That moment no one saw coming lol Now how will they feel about Flint going forward I wonder.
To this day it still annoys me how underrated this show was!
So glad you guys are watching this show! Top 3 of all time in my opinion! Shit bout to ramp up.
P.S. Flint is that dude!!!!
The ship is called a “man of war” for a reason.
Plus in the 18th century you did not mess with Spain.
There's a Netflix documentary about this era of piracy called The Lost Pirate Kingdom. I only saw Ep. 1. It was highly stylized and kinda goofy, but good if you want to learn more about this time in history! I promise it has very little to do with Black Sails actual plot lol, but if you're concerned about any potential spoilers you can try it out after you've finished the reactions.
Flint episode 1: Lies to his crew, frames Singleton, bludgeons him to death with a cannon ball.
Steven: Ah flint was so suffocated when we first met his we never suspected this 😂😂😂 made me laugh
Awesome reaction! Gotta get on season 2 ASAP! It only gets better... dare I say maybe 2 Episodes a week???
This show is gonna get better and better as it goes on'
Scott practically raised eleanor he was there the day she eas born and after her mother died and with her father away he was her parent
Hell yeah this show is so good. Season 2 is my favorite. Can’t wait!!
I nearly stopped watching this when Gates died, he was my favourite, but I watched the end scene and yeah couldnt:) I really love Jack rackham and Flint, and max and anne.... Vane has a bod, but not my type....personality wise. There are so many fascinating characters with this show:) by the way, loving your reactions as always. Really enjoy seeing you enjoy it so much *preen* hugs to you both
I see Vane as the top thug on the island, the one who would lead the Mafia there if there was one.
This show knows how to do season finales!
Glad you guys enjoyed
This serie only gets better and better. Just you wait
The only great pirates that are fictional are Flint and Silver. Silver come from the book "Treasure Island". The other big names that are on the show and are to come all really existed. Also the greatest pirate of all time...Blackbeard.
Silver was probably the most famous fictional pirate before Jack Sparrow came around :) I like how they portrayed his character so true to the book. You can see the beginning of the character who could be facing an execution and then not only talk his way out of death but end up leading the people who wanted him dead.
I agree with you about Blackbeard! I can't wait until he shows up. I really enjoyed the episodes he was in.
Flint is also from Treasure Island. It's his treasure the one they're searching
I believe the huge caption slave guy was Charles father as well , like his mother was a slave and he ran away
I have watched alot of your reactions in the last 6 months. And I've got to tell you that I am a fan. You two make watching reaction videos fun. Especially the John Wick movies and Mad Max Fury Road. But I also watched the Game of Thrones and Breaking Bad series and they were very enjoyable keep up the great work. This series Black Sails is going to keep you guessing and that I will enjoy because it's one of my favorites. Pirates were the first English citizens to rebel against the crown. The next English citizens to rebel against the crown were Americans. I think they deserve a better place in history.
Anne Bonny and Jack are real pirates too! Anne's story is amazing, you should react to the songs about her life that Karliene made, they're on RUclips!
It only gets more and more amazing by the way...
Flint starts to make sence soon. It will all click into place.
Yeap, as Steve said, Vane was a real pirate, so as Jack Rackham, Ben Hornigold, Anne Bonny etc... Many of them on this show
if you paid good attention during the first season you can see Gates and Flint were real friends what's more important flint respected him and saw Gates as his equal what is really rare with flint and other people ... so that's make the scene even more hard and sad
Good morning salties! There are many characters and events that take place in the show. You'll have LOTS of research to do when you've finished the show. Read the book Treasure Island. Season 2 answer's questions you've been asking and creates more. You have an interesting voyage ahead of you. Good sailing!
Yes Vane is loved! But because his story arc is incredible and complete. Not exactly because he’s hot...but it helps haha.
Team Flint
Of course Flint will sacrifice people to reach his goal. This is implicit in any endeavour that entails military action. People led in battle are risking their lives. They are all expendable or they shouldn't be there in the first place. All those who willingly joined this adventure know and agree to this premise.
I know....this show is amazing. And hilariously, this is easily easily the weakest season. 2 and 3 are SO much better. I like 3 and 4 equally but man the progression. I mean this season is incredible don't get me wrong. What an incredibly immersive and impressively shot finale. Yep, the Man O War took a few hits, turned broadside and blasted both "Tobacco ships" to bits. That moment where it opened up on them...you could see it easily in Flint resigned defeated face. Your reaction to the murder of Gates and also the Spanish cannon barrage was priceless. Shock and awe my friends. Shock and Awe and this is how we ALL felt. Freaking crazy and it just keeps on a rollin. I can't wait for next weeks reaction. Thanks again guys. So cool to see and hear your reaction!!!
Flint haa been broken years before the show opens, he's operating from that point on and that makes him somewhat dangerous and hard to asses and comprehend at times. After all, all we learn about Flint in "Treaure Island" is that he's a leegendary and alledly crazy pirate whom.... oh wait.... you havent read it so no *implicit spoilers* (from a book from the mid 19th century😅) ... let'a just say there's reasond and method to Flint but his cause is....well... he *has* a cause😉 .
Best regards
