Katy Perry needs to be very careful with words like “throw your life away” bc if someone is maybe not super well and they audition and don’t make it; well, that’s a slippery slope. Words can be very powerful.

@@polbzh Don't defend her for being an idiot. Katy is the last person to take advice from, she only says stupid things. In this competition, she's a COACH and a JUDGE, meaning that her words have power to the contestants and you have a responsibility to judge fairly and give appropriate and good advice. Otherwise you have failed at your job and deserve to be criticized/fired
The thing is, she has no sob story or relatablility for the show to leech off of. She's a confident singer. The show shuns that and every other show does as well. Look at that one guy on got talent when they fucked him over for being "too cocky" then made him strip down and hated it and basically got him to leave. I have basically no respect to any of the coaches or judges on these shows cause they're complacent in screwing people over
That's a fair point. I wish I knew how scripted these things were- I feel like the judges ahead of time have a few notes and recommendations from the production team to spice things up. I know I have personally had a friend who I think has a great voice- probably wouldn't win but he had a good chance of getting through with the right song. However, the producers had him sing a different song and also encouraged him to exaggerate certain vocal quirks. He ended up just sounding weird during the TV audition stage after following the advice of the production crew.
It's like the show will go out of its way sometimes to create drama and controversy where there is none to be found. Instead of trying to make singers look their best and set them up for success, they intentionally push people to look bad for the sake of drama. I guess it can be entertaining but I can't help but think that a show that focused on the realities of being a singer would be more unique and interesting, especially with celeb coaches.

I think laughing along with Katy Perry was a protective mechanism, but once she had time to think about it, she knew how incredibly rude and inappropriate Katy was. It’s like when someone makes a joke about you and everyone laugh, you automatically laugh too, because what’s the alternative? Call them out and make the situation even worse?
I think those judges should all be ashamed of themselves for laughing at her expense. Shame on them.
Honestly, sometimes you don't even realise someone has been rude to you until after the fact. It's like, you walk away and you're just like... wait a second. Wtf?

I completely agree with the idea that Katy was jealous of her. If anyone was a Katy fan in the 2000s/2010s you remember her being very 'quirky' and 'bubbly' just like this girl she acted annoyed with. Now there's a younger girl with the fun personality but a better voice standing in front of her and she's definitely threatened by it because she fell off

@@rayantoutcourt4134 she’s definitely not popping off the same way she used to though. She was a much bigger deal during the one of the boys/teenage dream era than she is today. I understand she has a family now and is focused on other things but her popularity has been on the decline and she’s never been a powerhouse vocalist.

As a mom of a young child I absolutely absolutely understood her as soon as she was baffled by the question. She couldn’t win no matter how she answered that.
I have dreams for my life but once I had a son, my dreams had to evolve because his dreams are so much more important to me. If I’m choosing between my kids and singing career, I’m choosing my kid 100% of the time.

She said she was rethinking her original song, after Katie perry made fun of her, and for her being a mother, none the less, Katie perry acted jealous, that's all you can get from her treatment of that woman. I think she thought that women is a traditional christian, who wanted children young, and now wants to live her other dream of being a singer, and Katie Perry wanted to break her will down, and make her feel less than, just because she was a young mother,who also just happened to be married

Firstly, I absolutely love Sara Beth’s voice. She has such an awesome tone, and sung both song’s incredibly well… I absolutely love her laid back relaxed style. She is one of those few people who can do all these cool things with their voice and make it appear effortless. Secondly, Sara Beth isn’t the only contestant that Katy Perry continuously encouraged to yell the song!! Why? We keep wondering why on earth she thinks people need to yell the lyrics. Super bizarre! I personally love the soft delicate parts of a song in contrast with belting and power. I just keep imagining people like Whitney Houston or Billie Eilish going on and Katy Perry telling them to “push, push, that’s not enough” during the soft moments… Lol!! Terrible coaching!

They all made fun of her, except Lionel, he just laughed uncomfortably at Katie perry, trying to get her to move on, but she didn't she wanted to hurt that women's feeling's and run her off, crying, she wanted it. The guilt trip for talented and skilled singers who aren't necessarily Hungry™️ for the title has always baffled me... Katy isn't the first to do this, it's such a strange thing to do
I think I kind of get it. Like In art school if you were a good artist the teachers would be very brutal on critiques and push you really hard. but if you weren’t very good it would seem they were ‘nicer’ cuz they wouldn’t say much cuz they know you reached your limit. So I think for the judges is like she’s naturally talented and they want to push her to her best ability because they know she has it in her. 🤷♂️

I just wish they would outright say, "Hey, I can see potential in you, and I want to see you push yourself because I know you can" instead of playing those mind games with the contestants :/
It's basically just saying, "You have to want this so bad that we get to micromanage your life just for the unlikely chance that it will ever be worth it and you only have yourself to blame when we leave your life shattered in pieces with nothing to show for it."

I was a young mum too, had 3 kids by my mid 20s and if anybody said this to me I would be really insulted and it probably would have knocked what little confidence I had left
To be honest I think Katy was probably annoyed by her bubbly personality, and that's more obvious given she said yes to her voice. Not saying it was right, just sharing my opinion.

I remember watching American Idol when I was a kid and the whole concept was like “it’s your dream to be a singer, it’s everything you want, and this is your chance to make it big, so push your limits”. So it’s not really out of pocket to talk a lot about this being a dream. I swear I remember back in the day contestants got sick and forced themselves through the pain to perform. It was wild. Also, I think Katy always dreamed to be a singer so I think it’s hard for her to wrap her mind around someone having kids first and then maybe doing singing later. I guess all Katy’s statements make sense, but She seems to not open up her mind to other peoples experiences that are different than hers. And people in the industry reallly need to start respecting people’s boundaries and safety.
Also her comments while she was singing made me so mad. I would have just stopped singing and walked out💀
I hated how Katy treated her. Did Katy apologize? She always try’s to make the show about her.

I saw this audition before seeing your video... and I remember feeling uncomfortable and mad that she was treated that way. She was all 😅😅😅... insulted but smiling, on some level I just wanted her to tell Katy to f*off.

Sara is awesome! I hate how the judges assume that she isn’t taking the experience “seriously”. Like have they ever heard of something called being nervous? She’s like singing in front of celebrities AND on national tv! And Katy was hella rude and her comments were def unprofessional and inappropriate! 🙄
Tori Kelly is actually sorta a family friend and she's such a sweet person with such a great singing voice. I'm so glad she was able to be as successful as she is in her singing career without American Idol. They would've held her back.

I don't think Katy is particularly nice😅 She's not a good judge. To interrupt someone while they're performing, just to say "not enough"? The way she "coaches" the contestant is the way she sings herself: She's screaming above anything else.
I see what you’re saying but remember it’s a show. There’s ways it’s edited, there’s ways they are told to do certain things by the producers.. also the industry isn’t nice. Be prepared or gtfo ya know?
Why do people think the industry "not being nice" is a good reason to be rude to people? It's not even particularly true to begin with as there are good and bad people in every industry. Not to mention that American Idol doesn't even produce stars anymore, so it's not even apart of "the industry" you're addressing. Being rude because other people you know are also rude isn't really a great argument.

this is why the voice is the only voice competition show i like- and yes im aware that ones very scripted too but its so much more just about raw vocal talent than the contestants/judges personality and drama

It’s not as scripted as you’d think if much at all. I got to watch my sister’s audition a couple years ago and from the recorded shows to the live shows. It’s just how everyone interacts with each other.

It makes me feel so sad that motherhood has been painted in a negative light by do many within pop-culture. Motherhood isn't for everyone, but it is wonderful, it is hard, it is unglamorous many times, it is precious, it is a sacrifice, and it has brought me a level of joy that is indescribable.
Katy was so annoying and rude, but it seemed like none of them really cared about her talent, didn't ask why she could't sing the other song first ans jut kept pushing her to do so, and didn´t even give her any advise that could help her. All that talk about that "being the dream" was so unnecesary and the way Katy said yes at the end like not really wanting to give her a chance but did it anyway, I felt so bad for Sara.
Also, I hate that Katy kept interrupting her singing. I'm not a singer but I like to sing karaoke by myself at home sometimes and my dad would interrumpt me when I was singing, even if it was something positive, it would make me lose focus and remember I wasn't really alone (I'm very shy) and it would make me very angry and stop doing it.

I don’t watch the show anymore but I do watch Clark Beckham’s youtube channel (he was the runner up on season 14, in 20115). He does reactions to the auditions and performances and gives little behind the scenes tid bits. He’s still a believer in the show because of what it can do for aspiring singers but he’s also very frank about the nature of the process. Anyhow …. Ya, there’s constant debate on his channel about Katy as a judge. She does seem to be hard on a lot of the young, cute women who audition while giving the cute young men every bit of leeway possible. It’s kinda weird to watch. Sometimes she’s the sweetest, warmest person in the room and the next minute she’s making these sorts of comments and you’re just left going, “Wtf? Why did they even air this?”. I guess they need to keep a bit of that Simon Cowell energy alive 🤷♀️. Not great, though.

Tristan, I know you probably won’t see this, but watching you be so sweet and concerned for Sara really healed something in me. I used to watch American Idol as a teenager, and though I loved to sing at the time (and had for my whole childhood), watching how mean the judges were to the contestants made me feel like I should never sing again because I didn’t want to be a subject of ridicule. Also, the thing you said about a sign of damage being that your throat will feel itchy or painful is so helpful. Thank you for being your kind self and sticking up for this clearly very talented woman. (Not to mention you’re proof that people can be funny and entertaining when listening to singing without being mean, which I love!)
Katy was really weird .. sara has incredible voice and can sing Benny and the jets incredible..I also love her spunky personality and seemed really happy and perky naturally.. and she's down to earth ..cool vibe to her .. Lionel shouldn't say no.. cause sara was real ..her love for music is genuine .. only Luke was amazing

I saw this before and Katy Perry is clearly trying to make this poor woman run away from her…. She is so rude and abrasive. She is acting like a total bully, and the only reason I can think of is maybe she is jealous of this young, beautiful, talented, happy, mother. Her behavior is just gross and I hope she apologizes to this young woman.

Also a major part of the new American idol is that the judges are looking for some who can be a star not just a singer, they want an artist who can sing, play and instrument and or be a songwriter. It’s no longer about just being a pretty singer

Wether it’s her dream or not doesn’t really matter because she has the voice. Thousands of people have tried out and said it was their dream but couldn’t even hold a note. Does that mean they should make it through just off that? We all have dreams but not all our dreams come true.

I think if you don't like how you are treated, you have to tell it right away no matter if you're on a show or it's a celebrity that is commenting on you, cause the other person also has to be aware that their behavior is not appropriate to learn not to do it potentionally otherwise they'll never change.

I agree that Katy had unnecessary points, but I really believe she was trying to make the girl give her best and be confident… As a judge she will never say, its ok if youre unsure about being a singer! I hope ppl understand her side and that she’s able of having mistakes too, I just wish her positive comments like the empathy she had to the guy that was victim of a school shooting have had so much impact and went viral like the negative ones.

Katy is an excellent human being and before criticizing someone so much, remember that she is a human being who feels and suffers. I hope all of you are perfect and so you can judge others!! I get what katy perry is doing. She’s giving that tough talk to her because that’s how the industry is and maybe she saw this girl is super innocent and wants to see if she can even handle BUT you have to give people a chance… if they go into it thinking they can’t do it they won’t do it. But if they go into thinking they can do it they will give it there best shot and give their all.. let them find out how the industry is themselves

Nice reaction, Tristan. I'm not particularly a fan of Katy Perry nor do I think that she is properly qualified to be a judge on American Idol. I can think of many other artists with careers that span a greater period of time. Their insight and wisdom would be paramount for upcoming singers.
There is no doubt that Katy Perry has some talent, as does Christina Aguilera and Demi Lovato. For me, where all 3 of them go wrong is their personalities. I have a pretty warped sense of humor so I can certainly understand and appreciate dry humor; however, observing these ladies over the years, I just get mean-girl vibes from them. I'm not saying that they are always mean but I do believe they could be bigger stars and be more liked by the public. That's just my opinion and I know some people will disagree with me.

I also belive society is really hard on women when they make strong coments...really hypocrite to only like women when they act naive or extremely friendly...
They edit out a-lot so when they say she needs to invest fully and you say you don’t understand why they are saying that to her bc she didn’t once show she was not showing that… it baffles me lol. It’s all edited and she probably said so much more during that audition that made them skeptical.
