    I love the idea of making this battery from household materials! Bravo! The brick cleaner version is similar to the Fe/Activated Carbon cells I have been building using FeCl3 electrolyte. I would not be surprised if the cell you built is actually rechargeable. I have been experimenting with building sealed Fe/Carbon coin type cells and recently tested one cell that sustained 101 charge/discharge cycles, at 0.84 volts. During this this 3 day testing period the output actually increased gradually 7%. I don't think my cell is an air battery because it was sealed with a silicone gasket.

    • @ThinkingandTinkering
      @ThinkingandTinkering  3 года назад +1

      you are probably making use of the Fe2+ /Fe3+ redox couple mate - here, basically the acid etches the iron - given H2 generation and consumption of the iron anode I wouldn't try to make this a sealed rechargeable version if I were you - but an Fe2+/Fe3+ version is more than doable for sure - if you try FeBr3 then you will get the Fe2+/Fe3+ couple on one side and Br2Br-/Br3- redox couple on the other side too

    • @justinw1765
      @justinw1765 2 года назад

      "Air" is a bit of misnomer. What is really meant is oxygen and oxidation. You don't need air for that. For example, if you're making Al air batteries, Oxi clean mixed in water works well to provide the oxygen necessary for the oxidation process.

    That's really usefull in an emergency. I'm not sure a phone will charge at 3V. USB spec defines 4.5V as a minimum and lithium ion needs 4.2V for the fixed voltage stage. Anyway, fun to try. I once showed my daughter the famous 2 coin battery with some salt water in between. She asked if it would replace an ordinairy battery. We calculated together how many we would need :-). Your's is a lot better.

    • @ThinkingandTinkering
      @ThinkingandTinkering  3 года назад +3

      thanks for the pointer mate - it would need a couple more then - the thing is the actual cell voltage of a well made cell like this is around 0.6V - but made this way it has a high internal resistance - the better you make it the less you will need

    Cool, now that you've done a video on a battery to make in an emergency, any chance of you doing a video on a "prepper" battery that people can make before the emergency and have packed away in a closet? I'd think something like the nickel-iron or the iron-copper would be good for that. Maybe make a paint with each, paint sections of newspaper, then roll up with the stixx machine. The only thing I'm not sure about, is how do you do the contacts. Any thoughts? And are the pottery glazes you've talked about the right form of iron and copper/nickel for the battery?

    Would the carbon rods used in stick welder's for creating an arc heater for brazing & soldering work rather than the pencil graphite much more robust and about 18 inches long give or take... My old buzzbox came with a holder just for that function. It was developed for farmers and ranchers 220- 230 in but in a pinch if one power leg is out you can use it on 120vac at reduced amps really cool old welder even has a battery charge feature for 6 vdc car/ tractor batteries... Still works like a champ..temp was rated at 3000 degrees' F' if I recall correctly...

    That's really awesome now I know what to do with my fine iron shavings from my lathe LOL I'm a lathe operator at least on the hobby level I have a old Logan 10-in lathe that I used to make a little side money I've been working on the lathe in the mill for about 17 years now and I end up with absolutely kilos and kilos of very fine iron shavings maybe I will separate out some fine regular iron shavings and put them in nylon socks for this purpose I do lose power quite often in the old neighborhood that I live in.
    I've always got a gallon or two of hydrochloric acid on hand

    Fantastic as usual, a small point though, 3.5V would only charge a phone battery to about 40%, you would want to get up to 4.2V for maximum charge of Li-Ion.

    Does this mean if you build it such that the iron is replaceable you have an nearly un limited battery the iron goes in solution right? If you get the salt that decompose with heat (the vinegar one would be iron acetate and would decompose ) you would get a renewable energy supply just decompose the salt with sunlight and fresnel less and you are good to go

      @ Ollie be
      It may work. Only way to know it to test it.
      Or go look at a bottle of brick cleaner and ask for the M.D.S.S., Material Data Safety Sheet for what's really in the brick cleaner at the store.
      Pickling vinager is at 6% regular vinegar is at 5%.
      It's way cheaper than your pool chemicals.

    • @ollieb9875
      @ollieb9875 3 года назад

      @@reypolice5231 I may test it! My curiosity is because we've literally got gallons of chlorine right now if our hypothetical hurricane comes and not very much vinegar! 😅 I'm not using my balsamic. That's for salad.
      My understanding is the active ingredient in brick cleaner is hydrochloric acid, and that Sodium hypochlorite is like that but a gas concentrated in water somehow. 🤔
      We had a good chemistry teacher when I was at school 25 years ago but all I remember was setting things on fire and making rockets out of cola bottles 🤭🤣🍻

    Out of curiosity. if you use a bigger container and larger componets, would it make for a larger chemical reaction?
    Like generating a higher voltage or lasting longer. Or is it a set defined voltage per reaction.

    speaking of home made batteries I have a question for you.... I want to make a acid battery
    that uses dissimilar metals, but I don't know which metals are the best to use, if I remember copper and zinc were the best voltage producers per cell I plan to make a large battery that will last a few years at a time that can power my 2000w inverter 12v input 120vac output
    this may cost me quite a bit for the metal but I think it would be worth it to have power when the electricity goes out. i figure 12"square plates per cell and enough plates to make 12 volts.... what do you suggest ? thanks in advance !

    I feel like you should collect the hydrogen that is generated somehow. Throw it into a small motor as a fuel and you can generate even more electricity and make yourself some water as well.
