  • The WP&YR # 73 Engine is making a round trip through my Garden train layout pulling four scratch-build model coaches. It is a series of snapshots following the Aster-made model of the 3 foot gauge White Pass steam engine on the 225 meter (750 feet) course. The scale is 1:22.5.

    This is one GORGEOUS G-scale model railroad. You have done a magnificent job of scaling all elements and keeping things is proper visual proportion. I imagine the upkeep is a monster, but well worth it for the appearance and flawless operation I'm seeing here. Bravo.

      Well, thank you David for the compliment. I try. And you are right about the maintenance issue. As I get older it becomes more difficult and takes longer. Silly me, I have just added another 60 meter track extension. There will be a video of that in due course.

    FANTASTIC!!! Love your attention to detail! Love the people (engineer, passengers, where's the fireman?)! Love the care you took to make your roadbed so smooth and level so that your rolling stock doesn't wobble! Love the slower "scale speed" for realism! Beautiful garden layout and contest-worthy scratch-building!!!

      Sorry about the fireman, he will be added. That engine was out for a test run and he was left behind. I hate wobbling rolling stock. I make it a habit to have all my track releveled and reballasted each spring. A lot of work, but worth it. You sir, are a man of my heart, many viewers are asking the dreaded question: Can't it go fasterI
      I thank you for your comments.

    Absolutely phenomenal railroad, I love how you recreated tunnel #1 very realistically. The scratch built cars are superb with passengers.
    The terrain is immaculate and very well designed, you must have a crew of workers to maintain that layout.
    Thanks for sharing.

      Sorry to say, there is no crew, just me. And it is getting harder to look after it, I will do the best I can for as long as I can. Turning 84 this year makes it a bit of a challenge.
      I thank you for your comments too, and may be I will see you in Skagway next year. I will be up there again.
      Looking at my RUclips channel you will also find my scratch-build shovelnoses running around the layout.

      @@Tshasta4449 Thank you again. Aster has in deed done a nice job of replicating the 73, but unfortunately the drive is less than perfect. It is load sensitive and runs too slowly, I will have to rebuild it.

      I too love this locomotive. It is commercially made, but I have done some detail improvements. The big issue was, the loco was too slow. I had to replace the motor with a faster and more powerful one. Not an easy job. Thanks for your interest and comment.

      This locomotive was made as a limited edition and it was quite expensive. The video was a test run before I took it apart and changed the motor. They were all too slow and weak, now it is running faster and is more willing to pull a load. Thanks for your comment.

    The WP&Y crew have kept No 73 very clean. It looks very appropriate on your excellent layout, at time frame 04:27,
    modeling of "Tunnel Mountain" at mileage point 16.0 on the real WP&Y RR.

    • @Landsend-Railroad
      @Landsend-Railroad  5 лет назад

      Peter you already knew I modeled that part of the layout after the WP&YR. But you are right with the #73 on the trestle entering tunnel 1 this scene really comes to life.

    Wow, beautiful video, I really liked it, thanks for having it shared.
    I am editor at 24trains.tv and I would like to see if it is possible to have some of your video’s on our platform. How we can get in touch with you privately to discuss the details?
    Thanks in advance for your reply and keep up the good work!

    I've found one of these locomotives what's the minimum curve needed? I run LGB R2 or 5.5ft curves.

    • @Landsend-Railroad
      @Landsend-Railroad  4 года назад

      LGB claims it should run on the smallest radius they sell, R1, that is 3 feet, but I have never tried it and would not force it to do that. It looks and works very well on R3 curves, 6 feet.
      You may not have a problem with the R2, but again you are pushing the envelope. It is a very long engine, and the outward overhang is making it look uncomfortable in tight curves.There is another problem with that engine, the motor is a bigger Buehler motor, than what you find in most locos. Yet it is it is a poor choice, to low in RPM and not powerful enough. The engine runs very slowly under any load. I, and others, have replaced the motor for a higher speed one, that will also develop more pulling power. It is not a job for beginners. My engine runs about twice as fast now as it used to, but still slower than most.

    What types of ground covers do you use?

      I had good experience with Woolly Thyme, Corsican Mint, different kinds of moss and for color in June/July Stonecrop Sedum.

    What do you use for a power supply?

    • @Landsend-Railroad
      @Landsend-Railroad  3 года назад

      The power supply is home built. It delivers 6 , 12 and 20 Volt AC for lights and track switches. Also 18 Volts DC at up to 10 Amp for the trains. It feeds an Aristo Train Engineer which allows the control of the voltage to the track from a hand-held walkaround unit via radio.
