  • Crash On the run, the Crash Bandicoot Mobile Runner game, is officially dead. King came forward and announced it a month ago, but the way they went with it was Awful. How could Crash on the Run be canned when Crash Team Rumble was just RIGHT around the corner? Let's talk about it.

What I'm most upset about isn't the fact that the game will disappear; I actually don't really care much about mobile games. What REALLY angers me is the lack of communication on King's part. There's no excuse for leaving everyone in the dark for over a year, then "Suprise! The game is dead!" Absolutely unacceptable.

This game was literally made for this type of mobile game...an endless runner! But King has gotta be King and...well...SOMETHING behind the scenes happened that we're not privvy to.
For me, the game was a "waiting on timers" simulator, with far too many collection runs to be worth my time. They managed to make Crash boring, and that is a hell of an achievement. Shame too; I really like these designs of the cast. Ah well.

I really think that Crash On The Run could’ve be just a mobile game and not a live service game. Most live service games like Fortnite and Fall Guys will have micro transactions in it. To make the game last longer, they would need to get constant updates by fixing bugs and glitches and adding new stuff to the game. This game has the potential to bring in new audiences that has never played a Crash Bandicoot game before. It was really a missed opportunity for Crash On The Run shine. I really hope that this doesn’t happen with Crash Team Rumble.

i was absolutely heartbroken when i read the announcement that the game was ending, and furthermore when i realized i could never play it again. i’m part of the hypothetical 0.5% that adored the game, i didn’t finish every island, but i had definitely spent months grinding out the game and even went back to it within the past few weeks, even without the addition of any new content. i was disappointed initially with the UI change because it got rid of a bunch of “coming soon” features, but then to see that the game was being wiped from existence explained why that happened. i think the thing that makes me the most upset is just how nonchalant they’re acting about the whole thing. there was absolutely no communication to the fans, and seeing the king support conversation, there probably wasn’t a whole lot of internal communication happening either. i hope to see this getting more attention, because i’m not too happy with how my boy crash is being handled atm

I was SUPER INTO this game at its peak. I was consistently the #1 player on my team, which in turn was Top 3 many seasons in a row, up through around the time they "temporarily" cancelled the Seasons entirely.
Imo, here's what ultimately killed it.
    - They "temporarily" discontinued the multiplayer Seasons. Not only did this probably decrease their revenue -- as a lot of us bought the Bandicoot Pass for extra prizes during each season -- but it also killed the multiplayer aspect of the game entirely.
    - That multiplayer aspect was important, imo, because if you got hyperfixated and super into the game like I did -- which is generally a goal for these kinds of casual mobile games, get you hooked -- it wasn't long before you made your way through all of the core game content. Once you unlocked Upstream, the final level "so far", and beat all of the bosses, the game no longer had any point without new content added.
    - The reason for suspending Seasons was to divert resources back toward improving and expanding the core game. This never happened.
    - Around the time I stopped playing -- by which time this was partly bc it was hemorrhaging users, including my former teammates from a Crash Bandicoot Discord server I frequent -- they introduced a really shitty UI update that really stripped a lot of the visual charm and character out of the game. This didn't help.
    - Some of the UI change may have occurred because from the game's launch onward, the main screen had featured several "Coming Soon" areas. By the time of said UI change, it had probably become apparent that those elements -- marked on the map by Crash's jetboard, Coco's jetski, and a couple of other things -- were never going to be developed.
It's kind of sad, because for a stretch of time, they actually had a pretty successful game. Then they fucked with it and everyone left.

This, right here, is why physical media is so important in this day and age. With physical media, you can never lose the content stored on that particular unit, be it base game content or content you've already downloaded into the game, and it will always be with you forever. Rendering something lost media not only means it is permanently gone, never to be seen again, but also results in pretty much nothing good coming out for any parties involved. It happened with Dr. Mario World and Super Mario Bros. 35, and now it's happening with Crash: On the Run as well, and in all 3 cases, it's nothing short of disheartening. This is why Keep Circulating the Tapes is one of my least favorite tropes of all time; companies seem to practically enforce it nowadays in regards to their products.

I've spent money on this game, I'm a Crash fan since '99, it's a shame on one hand, but it's also a slap in the face of those King-suckers, when I was the only one skeptic about it BEFORE launch, solely for the fact of King being behind the first Crash mobile game, they make match-3 games, for Coco's sake. I managed to collect all 200+ gems, allcolored gems, all plat relics, every item in every 'battlepass' since the first one. I didn't get every skin though since i avoided buying the crystals and only bought the subscription for crystals. I can live with not having every skin though, anything that was able to be earned though i got. (Not every clan skin though, didn't get top 1 rank for some of them.)

I am really upset about the news when they first tweeted this on Twitter that I said a whole rant on a discord call why I think this is ridiculous because Crash on the run was the only mobile game I play, it could have potential to release new content to keep fans/everybody who downloaded the game to be hyped for Crash Team Rumble. The Game was a huge success that lead people to buy Crash Bandicoot 4, and it had more downloads than Mario Run did. but what really bothers me about this is the lack of communication. You can't just say "we will release new COTR content in 2022" but 14 month's later just say oh we are delisting the game and make the game not playable on February 16th, 2023. I do hope we do get a new Crash mobile game in the future that has great support and at least has great communication with the Crash community, because honestly King did us dirty folks. :(

Activision makes the most mind-boggling decisions. I have known this for a long time playing Blizzard games. There is no way a 60 million download game wasn't making money. CTR: NF honestly sold very well. It sometimes feels like they pretend that everything other than Call of Duty and WoW aren't profitable when numerically it's not true. I really don't understand a lot of the time.

They kinda did a similar thing when they cut CTR short of its final season. As a big Crash fan how can I even invest in Rumble when I know they won't consistently update the game and inevitably cut promised content? This is not a good look for a company that's about to launch a multi-million dollar multiplayer Crash game.

Should be a standard for any game that’s come to the end of its actively supported run and online features turned off.. Make it playable offline.. It’s not a big request.. I could say the same of any game that’s ‘always online’ when it’s not everything is gone.. Everyones hard work, time it’s all flushed and that is just a bad direction for gaming media to go. Period.

I have a feeling this isn't something King made on their own, but more like Activision forced them to shut down operations. Activision itself tends to flip the switch if a game isn't making money, and if it isn't making money, they'll force the devs to cease services and focus on the next project... or whatever will potentially make more money than what they had previously. (*Points at Heroes of the Storm*)
I've heard one developer on the Overwatch team wrote out a tweet that they had to cancel various ideas and plans for Overwatch because of Activision's choice of direction they wanted the game go. Hence why I think this didn't seem like a decision King themselves would make, but rather something Activision told them to do (that and also possibly to work on some WoW Mobile game called Arclight Rumble.)

Thank you for speaking about this and keeping things real (your thoughts and feelings about this situation). It’s amazing to me that they just delisted the game from the App Store and let the game die without so much as even an update or news about it being sent out to fans or the player base early on. They could have even asked fans and the player base for suggestions as to how to make the game better and implemented those ideas in some way or another. And what about those supposed updates coming to the game to make the game/the year “Crashier than ever”??? At least update everyone on what is going on? I wasn’t the biggest fan of this game (doesn’t mean I didn’t play it or like some of the elements), but that doesn’t mean updates to the game couldn’t have made it better and more enjoyable. I don’t like the reliance on microtransactions in mobile games. That being said, with some tweaks and modifications to the game and it’s currency and progression system, perhaps it could’ve been fine. This game is yet again another missed opportunity for the series and another Crash game lost to history. I feel like I’m getting used to/tired of seeing this? …Disappointing. Very disappointing. 👎

After the success of the Remaster Trilogy they want full milking factory.
They had the best Cart Racer on the Market. They stopped working on it after a year. Now they had the best mobile runner and they botched it aswell. And mark my words the new Moba style game will suffer the same fate so dont bother playing that.

even tho i havent played this at all im here to give people at least some hope with this comment:
i wanna bring attention to the fact that this has also happened to another endless runner - sonic runners. the fix for that game was seemingly pretty easy, and it was to change the code slightly to make it ping a custom server instead of the official one. im not sure how feasible that is with this game, but hopefully we can see that soon so that everyone can continue to play it, or experience it for the first time.
as for sonic runners (now sonic runners revival), they managed to decompile the game and add in an offline mode, so hopefully that can also be done with this game, even tho it may take a while before we can see that

It was not so successful game (regardless of the number of downloads) . Personally, I found it acceptable, but it didn't play my nostalgia that much. The background music was not classic, and the graphics looked like someone trying to imitate the original crash bandicoot! Also, there are too many details and options to play. I did not find it interesting to use the chemicals to play.
Although your point makes sense regarding the possible number of active players. However, if it was profitable definitely they would not remove it from the stores.
The idea of making a running game for crash is excellent. However, they should make as simple as the subway surfer and considering the nostalgia vibes.

Honestly I'm more curious on why it failed and got closed down, although considering it might've been something to do with a massive player drop off isn't too surprising in the slightest, we should've seen the signs about this failing, first the developer being King who are notoriously known for their MTX hungry mobile games and would rather rob you blind than make a good product, secondly the technical issues that plagued this game since the start didn't help much either, plus the tedious grinding for little reward became exhausting after a while, not to mention the MTX was really bad and just proving once again corporate greed and MTX can ruin even the best of projects, just would like it if better laws were in place for the consumer especially for MTX garbage like this, the government banned loot boxes and doing that was too broad cause there's dozens of ways scummy devs can rip you off other than making some controlled randomized odds of rewards for the play to earn in the same way a innocent pack of Trading Cards can be.

Unfortunately Crash On The Run wasn't intended to be a "long investment game" such as Subway Surfers, Temple Run, and many other runner based games. It was basically a "cash grab" game focusing on short term profit.
And it's sad that most of the games out there will always follow this trend of trying to monetize as much as possible in exchange of ruining the game at long term.
King could have avoided that but because of the lack of organization/communication (or whatever else happened in their studio) - they got all the blame for COTR being a "failure" from the community.
Imagine a game with massive amounts of downloads being unable to produce 1 year of content and being permanently shutdown before 2 years of launch... Unbelieveable.

My opinion isn't unique, but this game really brought me up and then continually let me down, so I feel I should comment too.
I absolutely loved the concept and the hard work and effort put into the graphics, audio, gameplay, etc. I managed to try out the beta version and I was immediately hooked. When the game first came out, I played it every day, multiple times a day. However, I already noticed some design changes. Gems and other collectibles were no longer something you needed to try and find in a level, similar to the original Crash Bandicoot games. They were now simply options on a menu. This didn't kill my interest in the game, but I kept my eye on it.
As further updates were released, it seemed like almost every change made it more difficult for players to enjoy the game. They were adding things like more intense speed increases and more difficult bosses, both with a huge amount of bugs. This was somewhat acceptable for the players that had completed the entire game by playing 24/7 or buying their way through the waiting times, but for every new player, this became an immediate turn-off. Every update either seemed to be for the benefit of King's finances or for the benefit of the 0.01 percent of players who kept wanting something to change. Every single player I know stopped playing the game because of these changes.
I tried my best to keep supporting this, but as time went by, I started liking the game less and less. Even the UI started being pulled back with the cool island exploration menu being changed into a boring text and button menu.
I feel like every single step of the way, King had the option of making things better and they chose the wrong option... and they continued choosing the wrong option until people hated the game and left.
As you've said in the video, Canadian Guy Eh, they are now telling us that the game won't even be playable after they end the service. What sucks the most about this is that because of their greed and stubbornness, A) they don't want anyone to enjoy the game once they're no longer able to make money off it and B) the franchise will feel much less inclined to make another Crash Bandicoot mobile game again soon, which is very disappointing.
Overall, I'm only speculating, but it feels like the people that created this game did so because they were passionate and full of excitement, and it feels like the reason it failed was due to corporate greed and incompetence.

I'll go one step further and say this whole debacle is down to Activision (Blizzard) being utter shit as a result of the executives and shareholders. I have to say that because this isn't the first time Crash was subjected to bullshit under this company. Remember CTR: Nitro-Fueled's oddly-placed EULA and the subsequent microtransaction update?

You know honestly, I do like a game for a like a few weeks and don't bother it again, this is just opinion. BUT... the fact that King had to shutdown the game where it'll become one of the lost Crash media games in about a few weeks is pissing me off. You know at least make the game AT LEAST accessible with offline so that we can still play even after the shutdown date so we can play a legit Crash game without the stupid MTX.
This, in my opinion, is the reason why I hate when games are running through a live-service like most games are today and without a support of offline singleplayer. Because what's the point of owning a game like COTR for example, if you can't play for crap due to being dead in the water. I really hope they can save this game at least, if they do not then... well that blows and I know the community who are loving with COTR as you said in the video, will be so mad because they cannot play their favorite mobile game no more, because it got shutdown and inaccessible. Again, they need to do something about it asap before getting this game done for good and as a huge Cash Banooca fan, I'm very disappointed.

There's been a mass exodus of live service games in the past couple months. Executives finally realized that flooding the market with time sinking, play to work games, when the player base is finite and can only spend their time, money, and energy on a couple of these live services, would mean their would be more money spent on development and upkeep than purchases.
Unless this was always their intention, to use a "throw to the wall and see what sticks" mentality to games, as to find the one jackpot lottery treasure trove mmmmoney money money 🤑 and to trash the rest. Not sure if the revenue gained from The One™️ is greater than the lose from the lessers (ew icky), but when you're at the top nothing is really a gamble. They get to play the game of capital, while we get all our games taken from us.

I'm not a fan of force-running games like this (or mobile games in general)... HOWEVER, what happened here is a crying shame and is EXACTLY why I LOATH the current state of digital-only/live-service games that more or less require servers to function. For those that actually do care about games like this (or any game really), for all the time, effort, and money put into the game, just to go up in smoke on a WHIM? Worse, this specific case comes out of left field after the fans were being strung along for over a year, told that improvements would come, only to become a proverbial slap to the face twicefold!
