This is a true story from Ronnie Dunn's childhood. He says he rarely sings it live because his voice breaks every time. That old man must have really meant a lot to him.

Ronnie Dunn came from a single mom home and this man was a great male role model in his life. He wrote this as a tribute to him.

One of my favorite songs and everytime I listen to it I get tears, there's something spiritual about that song in the way Ronnie Dunn sings it. It's deep and beautiful for sure, I can understand why you reacted the way that you did because you were listening to it for the very first time. You'll have to step back and take another listen to it before you react.

This song speaks on many levels. Reminder... country is story ... every song (pre pop) it is supposed to make you feel .. and if you do then you know you have a hit. Wait until you get to George Jones ... "He stopped loving her today" ... you will get there ... and once you do ... it's crazy how it makes me feel ....

I know it gets to you, but to me the key is the line where he says, after finding out about the old man's passing, "I didn't know whether to cry or laugh."(3:14) Cry--that's obvious. But why would he laugh? Because he knows the old man is reunited with his wife and son, just like he said. Hang on to that piece, and you can find the sweetness in the sadness. That's why we ALL need to be watching this right now. With so much sadness out there, we have to be able to find the sweetness.

Your sensitivity shows what a solid man you are. The video challenges to give something of ourselves to the next generation. This man likely taught that little boy stuff like changing his oil in the truck. Or how to fish. The greatest gift he gave that little boy was lifelong friendship and the previous commodity of his time.

In 2020 my Momma passed from cancer. During our last few months together she requested this song (and only song she requested) to be played at her funeral. I had never heard it, and couldn't/didn't listen to it until the day she passed. I cried like a baby. I BELIEVE Momma. And I KNOW it doesn't all end with a ride in a hearse. Jesus Christ is The Way, The Truth and The Life...and the only way to the Father. I had a dream just a year or so before Mom got sick (or really we just didnt know yet 😔) that I was at her house at her feet crying and telling her I forgave her for the past, I repented for the things I did and said that did not honor her over the years and then I washed her feet. Then I woke up. That day I text her and told her what God laid on my heart. I said to her what I said in the dream and she said she said she loved me and she wished she could hear it every day. (I didnt mention washing her feet, she probably would have thought I was weird or something lol) Fast forward to 2020 and we found out she was sick. 3 months later she was paralyzed from the waist down (due to the cancer spreading). I took her in to take care of her. She didnt want that because she didnt want to put me through that, but I said no, you are my Momma and nobody will take care of you like someone who loves you. So she stayed. (Plus she cooked in a nursing home for over 20 years and knew how they treated patient's.) Anyway, it wasnt until one day I was giving her a sponge bath and got on the floor to wash her feet that I realized God restored our relationship and humbled me like never before... washing my mommas feet. She passed 2 days before my 40th birthday. One of the best moments was when I was helping her and she looked me in the eyes and said "Thank you for loving me so much". 😭💖 It wasn't always easy, she was "stubborn as a mule", as they say, but she was a fighter. Always was. All I could do was LOVE HER LIKE JESUS. So thats what I did. By the grace of God.

Old man had life lessons to pass on but his son had passed.
Child growing up with single Mom and no father figure needs to hear and see what being a man is.
Enter two people put together by God's design for each other.
Off Ronnie went to college, figuring that Mom and the only father figure he ever knew would be there forever. I cannot fathom the loss he must have felt learning his mentor had passed.
Heartbreaking the way Ronnie sings about growing up

  • @tinatreitler9192

You are witnessing the true story of singer Ronnie Dunns childhood. The song is beautiful on its own but the story video and Ronnie's bluesy/gospel voice brings it home!! They rarely perform it live because of how deeply Ronnie's connection to old man Wrigley was...it has shaped him as a person and a man. He saw no age or color barriers...this is truth at its finest. Brooks and Dunn have like 11 albums and are gems of country so pick a song...any song!!
PS ..I like how you show the video bigger instead of tiny in the corner!

We've all grown up with stuff.. but I know that from where I'm from.. we judge you on the person you are. not color. and I'm from a predominately white town.. Again.. who you are as a person.. that's what I care about. That's what we all should care about..end of story

The song is sad, and Ronnie Dunn just brings it out more. But the messages in it, are what I take from it.
