A couple of comments - First, thanks for the awesome video ... Second, there are a couple of "gotchas" with older UEFI bioses. The first is that they default to legacy bios - if you boot to the Ubuntu live USB, the default may be to use the legacy mode - in this case, you can not install HA in UEFI mode - to get around this, when booting the Ubuntu live disk, hit F11 (or F12) to bring up the boot menu and explictly select the UEFI choice for your USB stick. Then follow the directions. You will then probably have to explicitly enable the EFI boot as specified in the homeassistant instructions using efibootmgr

As always docs have been updated since HA is awesome at documentation. Only really one minor change, possibly two. Thiz method still works 100 percent with zero issues. They now recommend using the built in Disks utility in Ubuntu. I believe because it just works, no software download is required and it the HA image opens in Disks after downloading prompting what disk to write to because there is no third party software installed per option. Just makes it a bit quicker and more straight forward. There is a note at the very bottom that using the USB method may require ruining 2 terminal commands by booting back into Ubuntu. The "Clean" command in dispart gives an error that the device isn't ready - which is thre same error I get with every other Windows-based utility. I am hoping to avoid the need to bring up a Linux box just to whack a partition on a USB. Any thoughts?
Device isn't ready is kind of strange. Maybe pull the usb, restart the computer, and try a different port? I am just thinking this would be "clean" without anything trying to open it or use it. I'm sorry that's happening, I don't really know why that is.
@@ChuckBuilds this is happening with 2 USB drives. The first one I set up with Ubuntu but that kept freezing up my box I was trying to load the software on. I couldn't over-write it (neither Rufus nor Echer could write to it again) so I wrote Kali Live to a different drive and now I have 2 USB drives that I can't clean. It definitely is odd.
I've got a video on my channel about this. Primarily it's about ease of installation, power consumption, and delegation of system resources. A super high end PC is wasted just running HAOS when it can run HAOS and a bunch of other things. Virtualizing on top of windows is not a recommended way to run it as it will likely have stability and performance issues. Installing it directly on a low power PC is a great way to ensure 24/7 uptime, give old hardware a second life, and likely keep a lighter footprint on your power bill if spec'd properly.
You could write HAOS directly to the hard drive if you take it out of the case but running it off of a usb drive wouldn't be very good due to drive speed and lifespan of a USB drive being written to constantly. Which is why I think it isn't supported. By booting Ubuntu we "free" up the hard drive so we can write to it. We can't write to itself if you are booted on the OS on the disk

Once we get it running off the usb drive and HA is the only thing on the computer 💻 how do we update it in the future?
HomeAssistant can update itself. There are regular updates that you will be prompted to run from the web interface.
I use a 1 tb external drive for Linux systems all the time never had an issue booting from it.
That wouldn't be an issue. The common Issue I see is Micro-SD Cards or Flash-drives dying from sustained high IO commonly due to the logs
Followed instructions in method 1 and I dont have an IP address by either IPv4 for wlp2s0 or enp1s0

And how make server start on power outage on its own?? Win 11 pro need pin or password to get it up!!!! Really bad on microsoft codes
Restore on AC is the bios setting to turn back on after power outage. We don’t run windows 11 for this, HAOS will boot on it own without a passcode.

@@ChuckBuilds I am considering running both Frigate and Home Assistant. Is it feasible to run both on the same server? Alternatively, I may go with Blue Iris (Windows) and Home Assistant. Again, can I run both on the same server? I'm trying not to have too many devices.
@@BKamm depends on the server but yes. I run Frigate as a docker container and HomeAssistant OS as a VM on my unraid machine.
I followed all the steps using Ubuntu with a Dell OptiPlex 3050 i3-7100T 3.4GHz 16GB 240GB SSD to get stuck after "Waiting for the Home Assistant CLI to be ready…” with “[WARN] Home Assistant CLI not starting! Jump into emergency console…” followed by a line beginning with # .
I wrote the disk image twice on the SSD drive. Both times I got the same answer. I typed Login several times as suggested on other sites to always get the same result. I waited for long time home assistance will never load. Is there any command that needs to be used to initiate Home Assistant?.
That's interesting. I hate to say it this way but have you restarted it when that error shows? I've only gotten that once or twice and a restart resolved it. If you still don't have luck you'll need to access the log files on the machine to see what is causing it.
Let me know if I can help, sorry that you're having that error.
. I was using Wi-Fi and the error disappeared when I used a wired connection to the router. I have HA now and I’m learning the ropes. Thank you for the nice and clear instructions.
@@ChuckBuilds i am having same problem, no clue what to do next
plugged id hardwire now works!
plugged id hardwire now works!
whats happen if i try install HA on no uefi pc?
You wouldn’t be able to this way. Look into a vm or docker container
my wlp2so is blank, have an address at enp1s0 but nothing happens when i type into browswr
Did you include the port?
@@ChuckBuildsno idea and don't know how to do it if I didn't
@@dk-uj4yd in your web browser, when you go to the IP address make sure it is formatted like : IPADDRESS:8123/ for example mine is 192.168.86.206:8123/
@@ChuckBuilds yup, did that
@@dk-uj4yd and theres no errors on the host?
Is a 4 GB USB flash drive big enough ?
Should work!
Hi Chuck,
I have installed HA on my laptop without using Ubuntu. I used Balena Etcher to install it directly on the hard drive. Although I can access the internet through Ethernet, the built-in WiFi adapter is not recognized by HA. Do you have any thoughts on how to fix this issue?
Very helpful Video. Thank you!
I’d make sure it’s enabled in your bios first, then I’d search the forums for anyone with the same pc as you. It’s possible it doesn’t have drivers for it
Hi, which board is faster raspberry 5 or Dell optiplex?
It would depend on which dell optiplex you get. A raspberry Pi 5 would be a good host for a basic HomeAssistant install but you want to be sure to install it onto an SSD and not an SD card.
@@ChuckBuilds I want to buy a Dell OptiPlex 3050 Micro i5-7500T to replace the Raspberry
@@GERGE_GERGE I checked cpu comparisions and it looks like the i5-7500t is a good bit more powerful than the RPI5
This guy talks too f much. so annoying! Explanation is good, tho
Great Video..
