  • As Tory MPs jostle for position, can the Conservative party survive even more psychodrama?

Rishi Sunak has said he will remain as leader until the process to elect his successor has been agreed. But with the 1922 committee in disarray, it’s unclear when the party may be able to stage a leadership election.
In the meantime, Conservative leadership hopefuls are positioning themselves. Suella Braverman has been making inflammatory speeches in Washington. Kemi Badenoch has been attacking Rishi Sunak at shadow cabinet meetings. And Rachel Cunliffe reports that David Davis sees himself as potential LOTO material.
Hannah Barnes is joined by Rachel Cunliffe and Freddie Hayward on the New Statesman podcast to discuss why the Tories can’t seem to quit in-fighting.

Blimey the conservatives have destroyed the country over the last fourteen years with a little help from the liberal Dems, and the new government is given 12 months . I don't see how the maths works out on that? Anyway they have done more in their first week then the previous lot done the whole time they were in power.

the biggest electoral failure of the tories was making most people in the country poorer, making the services most people rely on catastrophically worse, allowing most towns and cities to fall into decline and neglect, and when people told them this was happening only replying with "the plan is working". Really, if they could have made peoples lives better and the country work with right wing policies then they wouldn't have been punished, if they'd done that by being more left wing then they wouldn't have been punished. What they need to do is take a look at the country, identify what is going wrong for people, and then work out what policies will actually fix those problems. Not what policies dark money funded thinktanks tell them will make the millionaires most happy. Or try to invent new none existent problems to distract people with. But actually look at what problems people actually care about and work out how to actually fix them. But they are the tories, so i suspect that such thinking will be beyond them

As a man of colour, I worry that people might think we are all like them - incompetent, loud, abrasive and horrible human beings. We really are not. I feel like the reason why people of colour in the Conservative Party appear disproportionately cruel and self-centred is that it's only such people who sadly are able to overcome the racism inherent in the Conservative machine - they're caricatures of cruelty to demonstrate to the Tories that they're "one of them", despite not being white.
I certainly don't attribute the behaviour of Braverman, Patel et al to the behaviour of people of colour as a whole - those people do a disservice to the vast majority of decent, normal people that all ethnic groups are comprised of.

We won't know for sure until the debate on the King's Speech, but Rishi Sunak's appears like he might both enjoy a few months as leader of the opposition and even turn out to be rather good at it. As for Suella Braverman, perhaps her actual purpose in Washington was to audition for a role in a second Trump Administration, in which case her speech was pitch perfect!

I think we can all agree that the Conservatives thoroughly deserved to lose the General Election, and to lose it very, very badly indeed-at least, in terms of seats. As Johnson's government was in 2019, Labour is very much on trial-with a pitiful percentage vote, of barely one third of those who actually even bothered to vote, Labour has it all to do to convince the public that they can run an effective administration. Strange too how quiet those Labour voices for a PR voting system have become all of a sudden-I wonder why? With such a small percentage vote for the winners, maybe we should have a confirmatory General Election vote, just to make sure that a Labour majority of 170-odd seats is really the outcome we desire. I'm sure Keir Starmer would agree; he used to be very keen on the concept of confirmatory votes, from what I recall, or is this yet another of his seemingly never ending conversions on that old road to Damascus.

A Labour government and England’s advancement to the Euro final are about the only positive pieces of news right now. Much as it’s lovely to see the Tories ripping themselves apart, the prospect of a further lurch to the right or, worse still, a merger with Reform, is very frightening. As for Cruella, she is poisonous and evil. One asks what happened to her in her past to make her go this way. A deeply flawed individual, like so many in the political far-right.

The Tories seem to be at the mercy of their own abrasive chemistry, an oil and water thing where the uptight and self rightious let their ego's get the better of them and rub each other up the wrong way. It only takes one or two to make things fractious. A bad time for them to make things any worse.

With just 121 MP's to pick from, and most of those not even junior minister quality, then they are not spoilt for choice. Also given that the MP's have foisted on the party contests between May/Leadsom, Johnson/Hunt, Truss/Sunak and Sunak/(Johnson bottled it-allegedly) then maybe a review of their election process would also be in order. A process that generated those match up's has to called into question. The Tories like to brag that their parliamentary party is the most sophisticated electorate in the world. Be that as it may, it's track record would indicate that it's not the brightest.

13:15 In recent years is the population even interested in punishment so much as having less crime by way of addressing the underlying sociological circumstances that lead to it? Prisons are expensive and don't necessarily lead to less crime. What is the most cost effective approach to minimising crime?

I love this really watching the Tories going even more far right like people who decide let's put a bit of poison in there fast food then loose customers to go for all poison in burgers and blame the customers. Really the Tories need to get rid of all the Tories philosophy post Brexit that the incompetence arrogant and basically Nasty Tories need to be kept away from the microphones or shown the door, also a good hard look in to removing the whip from anyone who was involved in Partygate.
