What If Rhaegar Targaryen KILLED Robert Baratheon? | Game of Thrones

- We go through how the events of Game of Thrones would change if the Rhaegar Targaryen KILLED Robert Baratheon. What would King Rhaegar's next move be, would there be on trial of his father the Mad King? How would he get Ned Stark on his side after running away with Lyanna Stark? Does Jon Snow come to King's Landing or go with Ned Stark? Does Tywin Lannister come back as the next Hand of the King?
Let us know how you think Rhaegar Living would effect the events of GoT
Selmy thought that it he had not rescued Aerys at Duskendale that Rheagar would have taken the throne and none of the events of GoT would happen

As to why Rhaegar never wrote to Robert or Ned:
The war wasn't actually about Rhaegar. To Rhaegar, the war was against his dad, and Rhaegar was being forced to lead an army because his Dad held his wife and kids hostage. There is no reason to think if you're Rhaegar that admitting Lyanna is fine would change anything.
To Robert the war was about Lyanna, but to Jon Arryn and Ned it was about overthrowing Aerys. It was always about Aerys, Robert just convinced himself otherwise
Best take
exactly. its actually a very compelling theory that Rhaegar wanted to overthrow his father once the war was over but never got the chance to. He even tells Jamie “there will be changes when i get back” right before he leaves for the trident
Nice well said
Exactly this. The Lords of the rebellion (Jon Arryn especially) were putting out feelers and making small moves for quite a while before the rebellion actually began and a lot of people believe that the initial plan was just to make sure the crown passed to Rhaegar sooner rather than later. The fostering of Ned and Robert was most likely done as a tacit show of alliance between the three main houses of the Rebellion, as it gave all three a socially acceptable reason to take up arms if any one was attacked - if House Arryn is attacked, then the Heirs to the North and the Stormlands are also under threat, letting both react as if it's an attack on them without making a formal alliance against the crown. Meanwhile, if House Stark or Baratheon is attacked, it would only be natural for their heir to join the fight/avenge the loss, and equally unsurprising if their surrogate father and brother decided to march with them.
The big change was Aerys executing Neds father, which forced them to move faster and then demanding Robert's head which forced them to act then or allow the entire thing to crumble. Considering the optics of how Rhaegar was behaving as a Prince ('kidnapping' a prominent Noble Lady, alienating Dorne etc) having him as the new King was also suddenly far less appealing and other plans were made.
Robert rebelled because someone took his idealised obsession he'd been promised he could have away, everyone else rebelled because the Mad King was burning people alive for the fun of it. If this had simply been a case of Rhaegar abducting Lyanna during an otherwise peaceful, prosperous and just reign by his father, even if Robert still rebelled over it half of the kingdoms wouldn't have marched behind him. It's most likely that Rhaegar would be slapped on the wrist, and the Starks and Baratheons would have been paid 'compensation' for the loss of their daughter and bride's virtue respectively. The Crown offering both a generous amount of land, gold or short term concessions and a higher status match for both Lyanna and Robert would probably have been seen as more than fair compared to a Princes indiscretion because, disgusting as that attitude is by today's standards, Lyanna in this society is essentially seen as property that Rhaegar damaged in a way which ruined it's value. And if word got out that it was consensual? In that case, Lyanna would just be seen as a bad daughter who shamed her house and ruined her prospects by taking up with a married man and it would be House Stark forced to compensate Robert and possibly even Rhaegar.
@@aecides3203
In the past, it was nothing to sniff at- marrying a prince/ king's mistress/ former mistress ('royal cast-off', as one novel described them) - as you say, it's not a great attitude- _but_ behavioural standards were different; a marriage to a royal mistress could come with some benefits- a larger dowry for the 'damaged goods' (ugh) as compensation, being the adoptive parent of a royal bastard, position at Court, appointments, &/ or titles, & income -- when marriage was seen as the goal, & it was really the only true avenue for independence from one's family- making a marriage of convenience would be necessary, after such an indiscretion - an unattached woman was seen as kind of dangerous. Again, it's a bizarre set of attitudes- but there's a commonality of form to the matter, so it happened fairly often...

@vigokarnebeek9856 he lost like twice tho. Robert was left too wounded to fight like 3 separate times during the rebellion and was a few inches away from losing to Rhaegar
I would pick Jahaerys.
I can imagine Ned listening to "Jaeherys", and going "Jae... Jaaeh... Jon it is!"
Personally i think it's Viserys. If i am not mistaken, Viserys is the male derivative of Visenya. We know for a fact that Rhaegar was obsessed with the prophecy of the 3 headed dragons. And he named his 2 kids with Elia Rhaenys and Aegon. Visenya was known to be boyish, rowdy and a warrior. And finally, the order, the OG trio were: Visenya - eldest Aegon - Middle Child Rhaenys - Youngest. In this case their order is reversed Rhaegar's daughter Rhaenys is the oldest, Aegon is the middle child and Jon/Viserys is the youngest.

To be fair, Rhaegar almost did best Robert in combat…he wounded him so badly he couldn’t march to Kings Landing and had to send Ned, he took him out of the battle.
Rhaegar was trained by Ser Arthur Dayne and Barristan Selmy, it isn’t out of the question that he could’ve killed Robert in single combat had the tide shifted that day.
Honestly a part of me feels like there may have been some foul play on the Trident anyways, we don’t have a pov chapter of that fight. In the madness of battle, someone could’ve easily shanked or hit Rhaegar from behind, leading to Robert’s victory.
Wounding someone badly does not a win make, and whilst Rhaegar trained with the best, it’s clear he was never a born fighter like Robert. It’s also likely that politics played a part in Robert staying behind- it’d be a damn shame if the new king drops dead of an infected wound so soon after winning his grand victory.
With this said, let’s not forget that their battle began on horseback where Rhaegar had the edge. I think he could win ahorse, but once Robert gets him on foot 1v1 Rhaegar is dead meat. Nor do I think Robert would let anyone interfere. He wants Rhaegar one on one. He got it.
Raegars buts had been drained fully by Layana and he was spent. Bobby b had been drained too but he had more T to replenish his nutsack
True, but i think there were too many witnesses (soldiers both loyalist and rebel) for anything other than the 'truth' to fly. If there was some foul play I'm sure we would've heard some dissenting whispers by now.
@@rakshithanand8262Yes, wounding does not mean you win. But it shows that Rhaegar was a capable enough fighter to potentially get a killing blow on Robert. If Robert makes one bad move Rhaegar could kill him, it just so happens Robert didn't make that bad move after being wounded.

@@Rizz779 I think Daemon would take the Targaryen name, if he won the crown.
@@Rizz779 The blackfyres weren't racist.. only a few of the lords that sided with Daemon hated the dornish and those lords didn't actually care about what the dornish looked like (half of Dornish lords look no different than Stormlanders or Reachman) they cared only about 2 things. 1. Dorne wasn't actually brought in as equals to the other lords they didn't have to change their name to Lord they kept the name Prince and most importantly they didn't have to provide taxes to the Crown. Which basically meant that Dorne was under the Iron Throne "in name only" the hierarchy after Daeron was the Targaryens, Prince or Princess of House Martell, then the Lord paramounts of the other kingdoms the Dornish also seemed to end up completely filling out Daerons court which made it look like he was being manipulated (don't believe he was but it was a bad look especially when no help was sent to the North by the crown when the Skagosi attacked them and the Stark lord was killed) 2. What if Oberyn Martell didn't dick around and won the trial by combat?
I don't really think that would have a huge change on the story tbh. I feel like Tywin would just have him assassinated afterwards.
@@Pandemia616
_If_ he was able to give the order; there's an implication that Tywin's passing wasn't just courtesy of Tyrion's crossbow bolts- they merely sped it up -- also, Oberyn's a poisons master, in addition to being a skilled fighter- so how much poison would be needed to kill him, how many 'hired guns', as it were?
When the scale for clandestine death goes from something like the relatively quiet death of Jon Arryn, the impaired judgement & delayed reaction of a drunk hunting Robert that passed as 'accidental'- to being cut down in the street/ throne room, wherever -- I don't think Oberyn's 'going quietly'...
There's also the question of whether Tywin would even _risk_ the associated political hassles to come with such: Dorne was barely being held back as it was, when Oberyn died in trial by combat (ie. an obvious & lawful manner, with multiple witnesses) - had he been poisoned or knifed somewhere; even Doran's diplomatic skill would potentially have failed to hold back the war-hawks, & honestly- there's a difference between your brother taking his chances & dying in a legal arrangement, & being an ambassador of a neighbouring nation- knifed by some thug, so I don't know that he'd *want* to hold them back- he might be more tempered than his brother, but Doran grieved the death of their sister for just as long- it's an equally old wound that would be compounded by the new loss.
Tywin would be more likely to want to come to a private understanding with Doran- which would likely mean part of the 'amends' that occurred in the book; Clegane's head, presented to the Dornish, as a gesture- what else the Dornish may want, I can't say -- a far bigger concern for Tywin, & everyone- if the trial 'proves Tyrion's innocence' - that needs must re-ask the question: who's responsible for Joffrey's death?
Do people _really_ think that a sheltered young noblewoman like Sansa ever knew enough to access a poison as rare & pricy as the Strangler, **&** how to handle it carefully enough to *_not_* draw attention to herself while dosing him, *&* not dose herself or another by accident? It's unlikely Tywin believes Sansa has anything to do with Joffrey's death, & he holds more than enough power to shake some sense into Cersei over the matter.
Would he perhaps investigate how a seemingly friendless tween - who had no resources, virtually never lacked for supervision/ spies, & spent next-to no time outside of the Red Keep, once arriving in the capitol- was somehow able to get out of the city that was replete with guards at every major point- *every day* , & completely disappear?
If Tyrion was 'proven innocent'- what would Tywin **_do_** with him? Keeping him at Court is _no bueno_ (Cersei would lose her rag)- send him back to the Rock? To do what? The man swore black & blue he'd never rule there. Ok, maybe Kevan or someone would be officially in charge, but it'd be a pretty bitter pill to swallow- the war's officially over, but the aftermath is still being felt- & it cost Tywin; he's got fewer & fewer reliable allies- & his overarching goal is to free his golden heir from the Kingsguard, to take his rightful place- he's Hand, & while his second grandson seems more amenable & biddable- he's also younger, necessitating more work, over a longer period of time -- but, back onto the situation with you least favourite child who's survived your judicial murder attempt: he's *just* seen you condemn him to death, until he f^cked up your plans with his *successful* trial by combat (that's a 'trust is gone'-moment, if ever there was one) -- a quiet attempt in his room, at a meal, or a chance 'bandit attack' on the way back home _could_ wrap things up in a neat bow - but it's unlikely he has any trust in you, whatsoever- he sniffs *_anything_* off - at _any_ point, kiss your chances of knocking the guy off quietly, goodbye...
I'd also argue that Oberyn _could_ have an impact; in the sense that there could be more unity in Dorne (book & show [though immensely weaker in portrayal, & a (half-arsed) fragment of what the book explores], part of why there are pear-shaped doings- is because there's a deep frustration & resentment over Doran seemingly doing 'nothing' in the wake of Oberyn's death- following not taking enough action in the immediate aftermath of Elia & her children's deaths, years before - however, what Dumbarse & Dipsh^t cut out was Doran revealing the long-game to Ellaria/ Arianne - not to mention conflating Ellaria with Arianne, & f^cking Darkstar, & making it look like Doran's little better than Cersei in not having a firm grip on what's going on in Dorne/ his own Court- whereas BookDoran has played his cards close to his chest, but confided in his brother- & after his brother's death, & his elder son's departure- to play his part, he reveals to Arianne the play- & what the next moves must be -- he knew about the rebellion from the start, & had it sewn up before they knew what hit them- if it wasn't for Darkstar's bloody-mindedness & Ser Arys' sense of guilt for breaking his vows, it could have been crushed bloodlessly, too) -- with both brothers alive, there would have been no rebellion in the first place, no coup- neither Doran, Myrcella, Trystane- nor anyone else, would have likely died at that point.
Their alliance with Dany would likely still have occurred, but with a more experienced military leader like Oberyn- & a more political mind like Doran - their alliance might have proved even stronger, & more important- & if Dorne still had Myrcella, Cersei would be somewhat more hamstrung in making a move against them.
Sorry, I had a lot of- _thoughts_ , lol
Tywin wouldn't get the chance he's poisoned already.
Either Tyrion would be sent to Casterly Rock by Tywin or he’d still be shunned to the point where his only options would be to betray King’s Landing either by going to Essos or Stannis anyway, but most likely Sansa would never go to the Eyrie, which would mean that crazy Lisa would be alive still so Littlefinger’s plans would go slower.

Rhaegar can just dethrone his father without killing him.
* It was actually fairly common to abdicate the throne for your son, once you became too old to do it, or to depose a King who was crazy Rhaegar got enough people around to help, so he can just go perform a soft coup, say to the world that his father willingly abdicated, and then lock him away where he can't damage anyone (send him to dragonstone). Rhaegar literally has the entire King's guard on his side, so it wouldn't even be hard
* Or he can even just make himself the De Facto King, by making himself the hand, and just keep his father rotting on the throne while taking all the real decisions until he dies. Veto anything stupid and that's it. Just gotta isolate him from any loyalist (ex, the pyromancers) who might try to do it anyway
* He might even say it openly "Yeah, my father is crazy, I'm taking the crown now" without any trickery and literally no one would object. Just say "Yeah, he's retired" or "We're having an intervention, he smells like shit" . And it's done. Ned, as a Northman, needs to claim his rightful vengeance. He has lost two brothers, Brandon & Robert and his father. The North marched to war explicitly to avenge Rickard and Brandon Stark.
The idea that Rhaegar could talk down Ned is false. Much of Rhaegar's reputation rests on the "James Dean Effect". He dies young, and thus becomes a romantic figure. If Lyanna and Rhaegar do not fie, they do not become romanticized, and likely become the target of many people's hatred, because their actions have cost the lives of many.
Even if Rhaegar told Ned truthfully that he loved Lyanna, and Lyanna loved Robert, they did not have the consent of House Stark to wed. And people died because of it. If nothing else, Ned would need to meet his duty to his bannermen to avenge themselves on the throne, and on Rhaegar.

1. Elia Martell was Rhaegar's wife and mother of his children. He nullified that marriage to be available to wed Lyanna Stark. By doing that he not only disrespected Elia, a Martell princess of Dorne, but invalidated his children with her and rendered them bastards in the eyes of the Seven Kingdoms (had they all lived and the annulment/marriage/baby been made known).
2. Because Rhaegar invalidated his first wife and children, he had to rename a legitimate son(Jon) as Aegon. There's a reason why both his sons carried this name. As to why the name held so much importance to him, I've no idea.
Rhaegar would hardly be the first Targaryen to take a second wife.
What if other mythical creatures existed like Kraken’s that rivaled the dragons and made house Greyjoy legitimately formidable.
Great video keep it up you're doing amazing things also could you do what if Jamie after killing mad king took the throne for himself
Having Rhaegar on the throne would have been way better than Cersei in terms of response to the White Walkers
That thumbnail 😂
Lyanna at her best
Jon’s new name should be Aemond Targaryen because he’s one of the few to live to old age and die
Lyanna did in fact ran away with Rhaegar. Recently there was a GRR Martin approved calendar with ASOIAF themed pictures. In one of them Lyanna and Rhaegar on the isle of Faces and it does not look as if she's unwilling to be with him (also might be cannonical place where they married)
Grrm can approve something without that meaning that it's canon dude
@@aslaksockcraftuh 😂😂
@@aslaksockcraft Dude he litterally wrote about it in his blog, I'm pretty sure he wouldn't in case it is not canon
What if Littlefinger rode Sweet Robin all the way to Iron Throne. DEFENDER OF THE VALE to King, with Uncle Peter has hand.
Boys, respectfully college football has started and Big Bobby B would've been a fan. Therefore this video is irrelevant
True. Rhaegar died in canon because he claimed soccer was the real football
@@OurHiltsHurtLove you guys. Finally watching after a solid day of degenerate festivities
Fun fact: the term soccer was coined in England and is short for association football
3:05 an act of bloodraven warging rob for a millisecond to make him hesitate attacking.
Great video keep it up you're doing amazing things also could you make a video if Baelor Targaryen didn't die in dunk and egg series and becomes king after his father
U guys gotta post more then 1 vid a week ur too good for 1 vid
The demons ford would be sick
Yeah that’s a great name
@@OurHiltsHurt Bobby B’s grave gotta have a sick name
@@mrducky..well Robert would not be the demon of the trident so why would they call it that
Imagining my boy Bobby B losing to Rhaetard is torture
I know. It was hard to imagine such a world.
idk how in the fucking hell you dont have 500k subs at least, you guys are funny as hell 😂
What if Jon actually wanted the Iron Throne after finding out his true parentage?
Oh I am SO here for the why Robert was in love with Ned video!! I think you guys making their love language just Robert going “Damn you Ned!” is the best thing I’ve ever heard, I fucking die every time 😂😂
What if Tommen Baratheon/Lannister wasn’t a pssy. He had a backbone, didn’t get pushed around by neither his mother or Margery or the faith.
Well he's 8.
You guys need to put these on Spotify as podcasts
Just discovered this channel love the content and working my way through your channel.
One thing I was thinking about is, what if crazy horse lady Lyanna had just been normal and married lord chadsworth himself Robert? Who would be king in the time of the main story and how would they deal with the long night?
Obviously that is a major theory to tackle and apologies if you have a video on that already. Love what you guys are doing!
I think Ned and Rhaegar would make a deal that includes Ned making sure everyone knows his sister wasn't kidnapped and the Mad King taking the black as punishment for burning Ned's father alive (among other things). And then sent word to Tywin, Mace and Stannis who will probably accept the deal as well. Only Tywin might need some encouragement, but like you said they can offer freeing Jamie and/or giving him his old job back as hand of the king. Tywin still rushes to kings landing pretending to helping the Mad King, but then instead of sacking the city they simply arrest the king. and if he tries to burn the city Jamie still stabs him in the back, hopefully.
This is my favourite channel on RUclips.
Rhaegar deserves to be sentenced to 1000hrs of Fallout 76 for stealing another man’s betrothed and starting a realm-wide war
Rhaegar kills bobby b talks to ned they head towards kings landing to anounce cease fire. Aryes sees it as attackstarts screaming about burn them all. Jamie would end up killing him and the pyro mancer. And when rheagar gets there jamie willing moves from throne. Raegar sends ned with baristan selmy to get lyanna and baby. Lyanna still dies. They marry cercy to edmure. Jon will probably be sent to winterfell to be fostered. Caitlyn will be more tollerant and may actually like him if hes not thought to be neds bastard. He would restore connington to his home. Have renly fostered with him. Leave stanis in storms end. He would probably let jamie out of kings guard as a king slayer still to make tywin happy. Connington is hand. Tywin master of coin.
What is up with all your thumbnail
What if Our Hilts Hurt posted the Dorne slander video? 👀
That video will be made
Not possible, god himself must've come down and told Bobby Boy that he had 1 Million Lyanas he could bone in heaven
I mean... I'm pretty sure that Rhaegar thought that Lyanna was going to have a daughter
One thing to remember,
Robert and Rhegar fought on horse back in the books.
It is very conceivably for Robert's horse to tumble in the river. If the would happen. It would be very easy for Rehgar to get a sword point at Roberts throat and demand him to yield.
This would stop the battle.
Rehgar offering mercy to Robert and the rest of the rebels would be a very interesting what if, because it would thow the whole Rehgar is a unchivelris monster argument the fuck out the window and would give quite a few people pause. If Robert was wounded enough he could be captured and held by Rehgar for enough time for Rehgar and Ned to talk. That would end the war right there. Him offering everyone clemency and Aryes refusing to honor this, would give Rehgar enough of a reason to depose his father, and send him to be exiled/imprisoned on dragonstone or some small nice island.
Roberts last words would be an apology to Ned for failing
Ser Allister as hand of the king… imagine him and Rhaegar as bffs
That would be great but we know Jon Con is getting in there
BANGER VIDEO
This is the best game of thrones channel
What I never understood is why honor bound Ned, after realizing that his sister wasn’t kidnapped, didn’t completely oppose Robert’s reign.
It doesn't really matter if she was kidnapped the war wasn't about just that.
Would love to a see a What If video about like Arya having Jaqen kill Tywin/Joffrey at Harrenhal. I feel like the war could go in several interesting directions
Since super chats aren’t available, throw our graces a super thank you. Let’s keep them in business until the live streams start.
Bobby's horse was taken out first. That part is canon. Anybody ever run through a river with shoes that have no traction?
Bobby was supposed to be about six and a half feet tall and stout. (Had to be thick, muscled or heavy, to carry that large war hammer.)
One slip on those river stones in that heavy armor, if you can't get your feet under you, you're going to be drowned by two shop boys grabbing your arms to hold your head under water.
(Am I the only one who pictured Bob Sapp congratulating himself because he made a guy crap himself?)
From here, if Rhaegar pulls back and admits Ned Stark to talk with his sister, Rhaegar wins the war.
The Ford Super Duty seems appropriate, considering that's what Robert did in his armor, lol.
Considering he had such a high respect for the dragon knight, it would probably be Aemon
What rhaegar should’ve done is switch ser barristan with Arthur dayne. Ser barristan is a veteran in all sense of the word. Bro would’ve stuck inside the tower and protected lyanna and if ned and the northerners showed up they would’ve died on the spot. Ser barristan is honorable Don doubt but he is also isn’t blinded by it. He would’ve put some traps or some sort to even out the playing field agaisnt the 7 northerners.
Arthur dain on the other hand being on the trident is a no brainer.the rebels wouldve shit their pants if they knew the sword of the morning was cleaving through their allies💀
