- Annoying overachievers seem to somehow be doing everything, perfectly, all of the time which, while great for their resume, can get a little old for the more “average” people around them. But while they might make being perfect look easy, oftentimes a peek below the surface shows us that there are complex motivations that drive these ambitious figures. So let’s take a look at what’s really motivating this drive to be the best at everything and how this attitude can actually hold these perfectionists back from reaching their true potential (plus we’ll break down the weird double standard that is the reason these characters are so often women.)

@@seebothways9630 No, it's not "blaming men" it's men making women seem they're bossy, crazy or just weird for having the same traits as a men would. It's double standards.
I used to want to be like Rory, but now, I'm glad that I'm nothing like her. She acted so entitled and spoilt, having been adored by almost everyone in her small town, and it wasn't until she got to Yale that she realised that everyone there was just as gifted as she was.
Most other TV overachievers are also entitled and spoiled. Rick Sanchez and Sheldon Cooper were entitled brats who got away with everything because they were seen as geniuses.
Nope a lot of people dislike Sheldon as well. But if they like male characters for being just as terrible as the female characters then it’s obviously sexist
Rory wasn't entitled at all though compared to a lot of these characters, and that's why she was a good role model in seasons 1-3 when many of us fell in love with her and related to her and wanted to be like her. She was in many ways modest and humble. She was soft spoken and cared about and respected others. She was the type of perfectionist who was only hurting herself not others in her approach. She didn't judge people around her as worse, as dumb/stupid. She wasn't acting annoying about any of it.
Nah. I hated Rory when I was young because I saw her as little kiss perfect. Now rewatching the show as a 30 some year old, I love high school Rory and don’t see her as problematic or entitled, but sweet and conscientious. college rory is a different story though. im
not a fan of college rory, but high school rory is great in my book
I get that people admire Rory that way, especially when young: smart, beautiful, and getting things done. When I was a younger man I wanted to be like certain over-achiever male characters who's name I've now forgotten because I thought they were cool and others were looking up to them. At an older age people tend to go over that need, especially when they no longer need that approval from others. I think it's then when you see the suffering behind the overachiever, rather the overachievers themselves realise this or not.
I still admire Hermione Granger though - and for good reasons - but I also see the struggles she had to face, and the stress which I didn't saw before.
My parents showed me love one day every month: when the report card came in. That and other things were terribly scarring, and led to emotional breakdowns, depression and burn out, which is not as easily treatable as one might think, as well as physical illness. I'm just now trying to learn how to stay behind after realizing I've been through a lifetime of killing myself

Same. And since I grew up in a time when ADHD was something that only boys experienced, my parents treated me like their defective trophy because I couldn’t bring home the straight A’s that were expected from me.
I ended up breaking down so many times because I was told that I was lazy and wasn’t disciplined enough. When I finally got my diagnoses (I’m AuDHD), I didn’t even get an apology from my parents when they found out that it was something completely out of my control. They couldn’t take accountability for the abuse they piled on me when it was actually their fault I wasn’t achieving. It never occurred to them to get me tested for anything and chalked it up to character flaws…plus both autism and ADHD are genetic in origin.
Needless to say, I no longer have a relationship with most of my biological family and created a new one of other queer, neurodivergent people that get me and love me for who I am.
I’m at peace, I do well in my career and I have a life that works for me.
@@Trix897im glad you made it work for you, being AuDHD is so hard when people only focus on making our lives harder. I have a similar life to yours, but i have not yet manage to tailor it to be better suited for me. Someday i will.
I feel like black swan is also a good example of this. She had paid the cost of perfection.
I would love a video on rebecca bunch from crazy ex-girlfriend. She's just such a nuanced character and I feel like the show does such a wonderful job of examining her mental health.

I loved Paris in Gilmore Girls. I can definitely relate to her situation, minus the Ivy League part. Academics were the only place I ever felt sure of myself - I definitely wasn't "cool" and didn't have luck with boys back then, plus my home life was not good. As an adult, I'm having to confront my perfectionism as I know it can sometimes sabotage me, but letting go is so hard.
That episode where Paris loses her virginity, gets rejected by Harvard, and melts down on TV? Liza Weil should have gotten an Emmy.
It is like Molly in Booksmart. Realizing all the "cool" kids were going to college after all you have given up to study and focus in your studies until the point that is your personality really hit home.
Paris was a really good character. She was entertaining to watch. Academics and perfectionism gave her an identity.
I used to be an overachiever in high school, until I got to college and was knocked down a few pegs by life and my newly discovered learning disabilities. Now, I do the best I can but at my own pace.
Blair Waldorf is an overachiever but she blackmails and schemes . She can’t be nice . She always has to fight back

@Missmagazinebura Yes. But the show also took her as a massive tool, you even said it. Almost everyone in Gossip Girl was awful, we were never supposed to root for them. As for Blair Waldorf, she had nothing to really "fight back" against, except Serena outshining her for no reason. That's not really a problem.
Im sorry, but I just cannot with Rachel.
Not only did she put other people down, she never seemed to be humble in a way. When she failed that audition, instead of just taking a seat back and being humble, she made it everyone's problem and interfered with their goals (Mercedes in the play, winning the election over Kurt, made Tina feel so bad that the girl got brainwashed to help her get another audition) to the point that there is a reason people wanted to see her fail. Not to mention sending a person to a crackhouse! She offered nothing to the glee club and was just a leeched that kept sucking and sucking till everyone just accepted it and honestly, it was sad
Rachel’s audition was AFTER the play and election. She did both of those things to give her a leg up on competition. This take is misogynistic yes she’s not likeable and hard to be around but she has acknowledged that and she is clearly the hardest working person on the show so why shouldn’t she get the most for her hard work? If Lebron James went into every practice telling the other players why he should be the one starting no one would question it because he’s LEBRON JAMES the greatest player in the league. But if he was “humble and took a back seat” when he failed one time everyone would call him a quitter and waste of talent

^the point of Glee club is not just to win competitions though, it’s to be a place where people who are outcasts can come to feel safe and all Rachel does is start fights, puts others down, and forcibly steals the spotlight.
She is toxic and bullies anyone who tries to challenge her in any way. I wish that other members like Kurt or Mercedes either left or at least told Mr. Shu that they and a few others were thinking about leaving if she continued treat them like this cause, and that he actually talked to her bc if they leave they can’t compete. The consequence of them not being able to compete/perform at all would hopefully have her dial it down.
My issue with Rachel is that she kept getting everything she wanted that she'd worked for over and over and then promptly throwing it away when something else came along or something didn't meet her expectations, instead of asking for help.
She wanted to be with Finn but then she cheated on him out of jealousy from sleeping with Santana when they weren't dating, instead of talking to him about how she felt.
She wanted to go to NYADA (which the only got into after begging, bribing and whining after choking at her audition) but she then she threw it away for a Broadway role when it became too much including her schoolwork, instead of talking to her teachers.
She wanted to be on Broadway and finally got the part she'd always dreamed of but then she skipped town to audition for a TV show when all she needed to do was ask for an understudy to do a few shows so she could take a break.
Not to mention the half dozen times she left the Glee club for something apparently better and then came back with her tail between her legs realizing she actually did need them. Finn wasn't afraid to call her out saying "Do you see anyone else here with a plate of I'm sorry cookies?"
Don't get me wrong I love the show & I think she finally gets her act together in season 6 but only because she had an awful lot of growing up to do & finally did it.
perfectionism can be a result of abuse. i didn't realize but i got so stressed when i had to do stuff that would be graded even daily homework. it doesn't mean we are perfect but that we try to be so we don't get screamed at or beaten. Thanks to therapy i can find joy in simple daily things such as baking and cooking instead of constant anxiety. (think Monica from Friends, but most relatable to me is the Bear protagonist ngl)
In my home, my mindset for so many years was “if I get straight A’s, I’ll be worthy of my parents’ love and approval.”
Needless to say, it never happened, and it had a profound impact on how I have relationships with other people, approach work and deal with horrible executive dysfunction.
I’m 52 and I don’t think I will ever recover, but I’m doing the best I can.

It’s interesting that the female overachiever is almost always in institutional settings(school, government) whereas the males are seen as scrappier - redefining their settings around them
Overachiever can be a trait if atypical. As someone with ADHD I had to put a lot of work, including coming into school earlier to meet one on one with the SPED teacher, sitting up front to pay attention better all to get average grades. It's common for Neurodiverse people to put twice as much effort to survive.
Kinda reminds me of my mum, she's a an overachiever in both her work and personal life, and due to my Dyspraxia no matter how much effort I put in, what I do will always be imperfect. And quite often she has to be reminded that that is not the worst thing on the planet.
I wish this was a more nuanced conversation (the take could benefit from multiple racial perspectives) The fact that there were all these examples of women but none of any Black and Brown women. I wonder about Asian women overachievers and the model minority trope, Black overachievers and the Black Tax and subverting racial stereotypes, and so on.

As a former overachiever, this video hits home.
I think the reason characters like Leslie were liked while Rachel Berry were hated is because of the empathy levels difference is so abysmal. Leslie wanted to overachieve with the purpose of making the world better for those in it, while Rachel was willing to sacrifice anyone and anything if it mean she was getting the chance to be on top with the perpetual spotlight on herself.
Motivation can be the defining factor between being a lovable character or a hated one. Because if you're doing it for something that others see as a worthy cause then the crazy is understood and becomes relatable, but if your motivation stinks as bad as your attitude then you're not worth redeeming. Like Damon in vampire diaries said "if youre gonna be bad? Be bad with purpose, otherwise you're not worth forgiving🤷🏻♂️"
Being queer and an overachiever is rarely explored in the media.

I was hoping you'd bring up Jessie from Saved by the Bell. Classic. This is actually one of my favorite tropes. You can tell actresses love these types of roles, and it works because it's FUNNY. That's why it's mostly seen in comedies.
But your examples for male overachievers like Walter White and Tony Soprano don't really work. For one thing, they're grown adults that you're comparing to mostly teens. Of course they are going to be experts or excel, compared to young people who are still learning. And to lament that they aren't branded as "annoying" or "too much", is weird when the characters they interact with would absolutely say they are. And unlike female overachievers, who do end up getting what they want or "winning" in the end, male overachievers like Walter and Tony are cautionary tales, and what they get in the end is more often... (check notes) death.
As we continue to talk about 'under-representation', it would be more interesting to examine male annoying over-achievers of the same age group, (If you can find any) because that is a far smaller demographic. I can only think of Ben from Never Have I Ever.
Ben was the only one I could think of at first too. Then there’s Thomas from The Carrie Diaries as an academic rival to Mouse (I actually like this trope), Justin from Wizards of Waverly Place, and Jesse St. James from Glee. That’s all I could come up with!
I think the trope just comes off as more compelling when the subject is a woman, esp. women of color, because we as the audience come with our own preconceived biases and real life experiences knowing these women are walking uphill to achieve success. Meanwhile you can’t spit without hitting a man who has that success, and got there on easier terrain. I do wish we could see the trope explored specifically with queer men, though. One of those tropes that reflects reality in this case.
Sheldon is 27 in the pilot of The Big Bang Theory. It is an interesting idea. There's no reason Paris from Gilmore Girls couldn't have been a boy. He still would have been annoying.

You can’t make Paris a boy without detangling her character from the pressures she feels to succeed as a young woman in STEM (she ends up studying medicine). Her spiral after her first time having sex with her boyfriend-borne from the societal ideas of womanhood and purity culture, and her own guilt for sparing a thought to a BOY instead of Harvard-is tied to her being an ambitious girl in the 2000s… Unless Paris was a gay/bi boy. That could work.
Well they showed The Bear but the same actor's character on Shameless, Lip, is actually a great example of a male high schooler and college student who is an overachiever until he crashes and fails.
Male overachievers include Sheldon Cooper from The Big Bang Theory, Shaun Murphy from The Good Doctor, Rick Sanchez of Rick and Morty, Spencer Reid of Criminal Minds, and Dr. House. For the same demographic with a fair comparison, we get Steve Urkel, Billy the Blue Power Ranger, Sheldon Cooper on Young Sheldon, and Malcolm from Malcolm in the Middle.

I unapologetically love Rachel Berry. To appreciate her character, you need to understand what Glee was: not a comedy, not a drama, or even a musical; Glee was a fantasy, a fever dream, and each character represented an idea. Rachel was the idea that pure, unadulterated talent was enough to take you to the top. She lied, cheated, fucked up and still made it to the Tony stage because her talent was that big. That’s a hilarious, ridiculous, yet genius idea brought perfectly to life by Lea Michele.

I’m a perfectionist but I’m definitely not a horrible person like Rachel from Glee. You can be an overachiever and a perfectionist without being a horrible person and treated everyone like crap. I have also experienced burn out because my family put so much pressure on me to succeed since I’m the first to graduate from college.
The only time(to me at least) the overachiever trope should be frowned upon is when it ends up being the entire trait of that character like on the Simpsons with Lisa and Martin Prince. Both of them have that as a stand out trait of their characters.
Remember Olga Pataki, from Hey Arnold. Whole episode based on this. Even though it was a lie.
Rory didn’t grow up in the private school world. She went to CT public schools where she was always the top student. It’s realistic that she expected things to come easy to her. I’m getting kind of sick of the Rory hate from the current culture. As if Rory’s behavior and characterization isn’t 100% accurate for a young girl of her circumstances? She’s a very realistic character!
And realistically not the greatest friend, nor a girl’s girl.
Rory could have been more likeable if she were written better - specifically, if she was depicted as learning from her mistakes. However, the writers failed her IMO. People like to see character growth and they didn't do that with Rory. Sure, it's realistic, but it's not interesting for TV characters.
@@360shadowmoon The new writers aren’t nearly as good as ASP and Husband, but they nailed it when they had Lorelai actually say “Rory’s used to getting her way, and doesn’t know how to deal with things when she doesn’t” in season 7.
I was just about to type that Rory has made some bad decision., but people love to over criticize her over the reboot. They are acting like she was a dummy and her grandparents bought her into Yale. At this point people just need to admit the reason they hate Rory is because she helped destroy a marriage and there is jealousy that she was quote on quote " normal middle-class student" that got through educational boundaries they wish they had.

Leslie isn't annoying overbearing most times, but at least she's kind and sweet and actually wants the best for people.
The “overachiever” (especially female ones) is annoying not because of his or her success but because this “success” is merely approval from the system they have learned to maneuver. It’s people like Wendi Adelson: they are the people that admins love because they flawlessly recite the company mission statement or count off the 5 core values of the institution, while they could care less about the daily work that ensures the smooth running of the office or classroom and even cause disruption to the essential work, etc.
They know how the system works and how most of the world works. Knowing how to maneuver the system is the most important skill for them.

Yes, you got it right. It’s both. If they were men then they’d be perceived as confident leaders, not annoying or overbearing. Yet the personality traits of an overachiever as a whole for *anyone* is too much for most people to handle. Plus it can be detrimental to your overall health in the long run.
No one says Sherlock Holmes needs to chill out and do some yoga to lead a more balanced and fulfilling life. There is no upper bound on what men are supposed to achieve, they are just achievers. Only women are over-achievers, because they have gone too far.
Holmes was an anti social, asexual drug addict that shot up cocaine. Watson was constantly trying to wean him off his drug habit. He was annoying and overbearing and flawed despite his genius.
They are perceived like Sheldon Cooper on Young Sheldon and Malcolm from Malcolm in the Middle. Those characters are also perceived as annoying. I think this Take was making "apples and oranges" comparisons. Sherlock Holmes and Wal-Turd White were long since out of high school and dealing with conflicts that were different from childhood and high school. For a fair comparison between female overachievers and Sherlock Holmes, there is Penelope Garcia from Criminal Minds and Abby from NCIS.
I get the take, cuz theyre so perfectionistic that its detrimental but its their expertise is seen as annoying due to patriarchal social norms which also plays into more perfectionism because they'll try to reach for more for respect from a system that is designed to not respect them
I'm curious how the trope is related to antisemitism. Annie from community, Rachel from Glee and Paris from Gilmore Girls are all Jewish women and often the only representation. I'd like to hear other peoples' thoughts on this.

This is totally my character type, I'm an overachiever. Paris Geller is my spirit animal. I never get that these figures are caricatures, instead I thought, that was the ideal. 🙃 I didn't like them, but they always were soo relatable.
And today I know, that I'm autistic and have ADHD.

Specially if it's a special interest? (Like Rachel Berry) ✅
Detail-oriented? ✅
Prefers facts over emotions? ✅
Big need to be accurate and to do it right? ✅

Don't care if the peers have less expectations and if it's akward to overachieve? ✅
High-organized and less open for other ways to do the work? ✅

I don't know every figure in this video, so I don't know if everyone is autistic-coded. But there are a lot (Hermione, Rachel, Paris, Annie).

I definitely have been headcanoning for years now that Paris herself is autistic and has ADHD too so I'm not surprised you relate deeply to her. Most of the female characters on Gilmore Girls seem to have ADHD to me, but only a few seem to potentially be autistic - Paris, April, and maybe Luke.
I was voted the class overachiever. I hadn’t realized I’d been annoying people until then. I was overweight and frankly not very attractive, so I thought that I was basically valueless to people (and in the 90s, I wasn’t that far off). So I was trying to make up for it. I thought if I did enough, maybe it would make up for not being the pretty girl. It turns out people just hated me more. I got some scholarships out of it and I generally don’t struggle with life or career so 🤷♀ I guess I kind of did make up for it? Just not with my HS peers. That was unsalvageable. I got less showy after that.
Consistent is better than perfect. And poor Paris she's is prof you can do everything right but people still need to like you.
Paris needed to learn that the world is not a meritocracy. She needed to learn that actually being rewarded for her hard work is a privilege.

Hey I love this channel and relate to this video a lot!! I have a small critique that I’m making just to hopefully improve things not to be snarky or anything. I wanted to flag that when you’re talking about Quinn’s challenges, “wheelchair bound” is ableist language. I’d suggest “adjust to using a wheelchair” or something similar that highlights the status of becoming a wheelchair user, rather than adding the negative association of being trapped in the chair. Many folks who use wheelchairs don’t feel trapped but rather see their chairs as an integral part of being mobile in a world not made for ppl with disabilities. Even if Quinn herself felt trapped, use of this language could be stigmatizing. This is what I’ve learned from disability activists online and friends who use chairs. (Also double checked by searching for the phrase to see if folks have written on it before writing this comment). I ofc cannot claim to speak for everyone, but offering this because the use of the phrase made me uncomfortable and I know y’all are principled feminists who might want to know. Thanks again for all the content I truly am a long time fan.

I am so sick of the Rory bashing. People mainly have this hatred of her because of the reboot. Yes, she had her fair share of fans that couldn't stand her because she cheated on Dean with Jess and her destroying a marriage, but people love to downplay her smarts and kindness, or nit-pick of little things in the original series to justify hating this girl. Rory did work hard to get into college so to discredit her isn't fair.
Rory is boring and a Mary Sue. That's why people are so hard with her

Yes that open doors for her but she did work her ass off to get extra credits for college applications to the point it was one of her issues with Dean. She just happened to make time for a social more then Paris. That doesn't make Paris more than or less than Rory.
I think the Rory hate was from her being accustomed to being the angel and always being told how smart she was, then dropping out of Yale and stealing a yacht when one professor hurts her feelings. She was a realistic result of spending her formative years being told how super smart she was and then being completely unprepared when professors were no longer impressed with her pile of books. Sure, Rory made some effort at Chilton, but her efforts were not Paris-level. If Rory was rewarded for her efforts, she would have had a B+/A- average and gotten into University of Connecticut, not surpassed Paris and gotten into to Yale.

I got nauseous just looking at the thumbnail thinking about who this reminds me of
I think this video really side steps how much the core part of all over achievers, male or female, is status and their contempt for the community they live in. To them intelligence and ambition are measurable and everyone who doesn’t hold themselves to their standards isn’t as good as them and therefore can’t teach them anything. The Tracy Flick character isn’t sympathetic because of the patriarchy it’s because throughout that movie she has several internal dialogues about how because of her hard work she should get what she wants and everyone else is lazy, stupid, and underserving as opposed to coming to the conclusion that many of her classmates are better than her in certain ways that she doesn’t value to her own detriment.
I mean, this video ends with Alex, a character who lacks emotional intelligence, talking about how everyone around her are idiots. I sure hope this dynamic didn’t go over everybody’s’ heads.
The Tracy Flick character was not sympathetic at all. She had all the entitlement problems of Rory Gilmore. There were no sympathetic characters in that movie. The morality was more gray on gray. Tracy Flick narrates about how great and hard working she is and she assumes everyone else is a lazy worthless peon. The teacher was a butt monkey and he was also highly flawed, but he had some valid points about her. Tracy was obsessed with getting something that nobody else cared about. She only won because her opponent voted for her and didn't care. I am sure Tracy was not the only student who wanted to achieve things and get into a college.
So what if someone is selfishly trying to be the best? Does everyone have to always put the greater good first? Or the lives of others? No. We're all individuals who are entitled to want the best for themselves. Stop pretending it's or should be otherwise.
Hey, you guys should do a video analysis about the characters on the show Girlfriends, it’s nice to see black women living their normal lives.
Tracy Flick was not a poor victim of men mistreating her. That movie had more of a gray on gray morality. There were no good guys or sympathetic characters in that movie.

This type of person and I did NOT get along when we were kids lol. I can sympathize with them now from an adult perspective, but as the lazy straight A student (I had undiagnosed ADHD), a lot of these people would get annoyed at me for either matching or surpassing their grades without trying as hard. I just thought they were annoying and snobby.

Being rewarded for your achievements is a privilege. So many people get no reward for their achievements or work. It gets worse if managers steal the credit. Winners never quit, quitters never win, and people who never do either never learn.

What I don't get, is they usually cast the blonde/ red head as "difficult"? The brunette/black hair is "easy" and we shoukd kiss their butts, even when they con you and make you cry every day of the year. And your children too. Why pay taxes for anything, we need a housing system not based off of peer and public school and scholastic likeability. If you don't provide the classes to help people, then why have it in banking and any government?
Rachel Berry’s problem isn’t her perfectionism or work ethic. It’s the vile way she treats everyone around her, her horrible actions and her spoiled brat mentality whenever she doesn’t get her way.
Yeah; It's the narcissism that potentially bled through from who the actress was in real life and that some people found humorous in the character and others found so unlikeable because it was too real. It's funny if you think it's absurd that anyone would be this way. It is painful when you realize it isn't as much of an exaggeration as people think.
