Bonaire Coral Spawning | JONATHAN BIRD'S BLUE WORLD

- How does an animal like coral that lives attached to the bottom (and can't move around) create new colonies far away? Jonathan spends a week in Bonaire studying coral spawning. He learns how these animals release eggs into the water at the right time of the year to create new coral colonies. But they only do it at night, at certain times of the year. Jonathan's film expedition requires careful timing.
This is an HD re-upload of a season 3 segment from 2011.
JONATHAN BIRD'S BLUE WORLD is an Emmy Award-winning underwater science/adventure series featuring underwater cinematographer/naturalist Jonathan Bird.

3 hours under water on that first dive! How much air did you have in your tank?! awesome vid
We stayed shallow. You can milk a tank for a long time in shallow water!
Just read recently that the Great Barrier Reef has lost much of its corals. Quite interesting animals don't deserve such fate.
It's not as bad as people are saying. They did have a big bleaching event due to warm water, but 99% of the corals recover when the water cools in winter.
+BlueWorldTV Well it's good enough to know they proliferate well.
When you go back home, you start seeing a coral growing on your head because one of the eggs ended up in your hair!
Wow
How do the Coral reproduce the eggs at the same time and how quickly would it approximately take to grow into a colony?
It's a bit of a mystery how they know to all work together on the timing, but the phase of the moon seems to be how they do it.
Thanks Jonathan!!! Im gonna write this is my notebook!!!
John bird what’s your favorite shark species?
It's hard to have a favorite.
@jonathan how do you stay more than 2 hours underwater with just on dive cylinders ? I dive also an when I dive with nitrox 32% and stay in a depth of around 16-20 Meter I have air for max. 1 hour and 30 minutes.
So how do you get 3 hours like said in the video out of only one cylinders ?
You dive very shallow and don't breathe much! :-)
The one neg thumbs down came from the squid..
Is it true that the further down you dive the less color you see?
Yes, the water is like a filter. You need lights to bring out the color.
BlueWorldTV Thanks! In June I will take my first diving class so I can become a certified!
Perv. JK 😁 Love your videos.!
I wish I had this when I was growing up...we had mutual of Omaha, better than nothing
Marlin Perkins!
Does hybridism occur between corals?
No, each species is distinct.

Are corals asexual?
Am Ros How? They can't move.
They reproduce kinda like plants. All plants that have flowers, called angiosperms, reproduce sexually. The pollen is transported by the wind and insects, just like the sperm of the coral is transported by the current. "Sexually" in this context means that an individual of this species has a sex, i.e. it produces either male or female gametes.
They can reproduce asexually too, which is how a coral colony grows.
